Philosophy of Counseling Theoretical Orientation Theoretical Orientation is important because counselors need to have a professional identity that matches who they are on a personal and professional view point. The way we conceptualize our clients and how we present ourselves to the presenting issues is important. The understanding of each theoretical orientation is usually presented in the beginning when working with clients. The way we approach, area of expertise and the services rendered to clients. Looking back at Heraclitus, this Greek philosopher said that “there is nothing permanent except change” and “you can never step into the same river twice,” (London, 2016). I know that this is not anywhere near what I think about change. Change is something that can come in the form of thought. If you think it, it can happen. The thought process has already come to you and now its time to make the choice to step forward and move in that direction or to do nothing and allow the moment to pass. But there is a time in which your allowed to come back to that thought and recreate the image in which you allowed yourself to have before then make the change. How do we make these changes? Usually based on feelings. These two feelings that we have are love and fear. Now Empedocles felt the universe has two difference forces called love and hate. If the guidelines are not followed, then the counselor is breaking a code in which could get them in trouble. I feel that the ethical and legal considerations and standards are an important part of counseling. The ethical standards create boundaries in which a professional can work and helps improve the practice. The laws also provide a standard in which the counselor has to follow to stay out of trouble. The ACA code of Ethics is the most recent published code that counselors have to follow. The ethical standards cover a variety of areas in which the counselor should become familiar with in order to apply the standards. The legal considerations will have to be done from the state in which you reside. Each state has their own legal standards and any counselor should either seek counsel with a lawyer to become familiar or have a lawyer on hand to consult with when questions
