There’s No Escaping “Clownpants” Clownpants Molina is a story presented in third person narrative. The third person is actually the flashback of the narrator in which “he” refers to himself as “you”. On the surface it appears to be a sad story of a young boy trying to fit in and losing his way. Digging deeper, we are challenged with struggles of culture, personal identity and the consequences of choices. This story is as much about the narrator as it is about the character. It is a remembrance of a person he cared about, and an acknowledgment of the loss they both “suffered”. Clownpants cannot escape himself, and the narrator cannot escape Clownpants. He is coming from a place with a culture that is just beginning to accept the concept of gays as anything more than a “closeted” issue. In coming to school dressed very flamboyantly, perhaps he thinks that his “personal style” will be better accepted in the East Los Angeles area. This area being one of the fist main hubs of the gay community. (Rojas) We know that in the way of family, Molina has come here with only his father, and an angry father at that. His father is openly harsh to him and taunts him while they are outside, while he makes Molina do yard work. He screams “What are you a girl?” The Machismo of the Latin culture is strong in the father and it angers him to see it lacking in his son. It is a matter of pride. His friend sees this. Again, we see the narrator being attuned to Molina’s feelings. This shows a level of sensitivity, not typically an attribute of a young, Latino male. Is this friend a Latino? We are not privy to that information. We can anticipate that he is, but he may just be a kid stuck in a low-income neighborhood. Nevertheless, he cares about Molina. Latino culture is one which is very much based in community and in family. Molina has only his father as family and that is a tentative relationship at best. He is disconnected from his cultural community in this new place. He is trying to get away from the “wetback” life. Molina is seeking an opportunity
