Culture is specific to one’s country, region, town, era, and background. More specifically Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines it as, “the beliefs, customs, arts, etc., of a particular society, group, place or time. A way of thinking, behaving, or working that exists in a place or organization” (“Culture”). Many people would agree that traditions and customs are the terms on which people live. Whether one is living in spite of that culture or to honor that culture. Though, culture does change over time. Being someone who had to move from northeastern Connecticut to the deep south South Carolina, going through a drastic culture change can be conflicting for anyone. He was born and raised during the middle of the European Colonization. His parents were amongst the first of the Christian converters in their village at the time. The village Achebe was raised in was under British jurisdiction and although his parents were evangelists, Achebe still attended local festivals and traditions (“Chinua Achebe”). His experiences in both Christianity and Igbo traditions is displayed throughout his works. His is able to portray Nigeria during the colonization unbiasedly while still telling the story from the perspective of a Nigerian. Although what encouraged Achebe to explore into writing, was his discovery of author Joyce Cary in his studies at the Government College in Nigeria and the London University College. Cary is credited with inspiring Achebe to become an author. Achebe was so troubled by Joyce Cary’s novel Mister Johnson and the inaccurate depiction of Nigerians and Africa in general, he decided to begin his first novel, Things Fall Apart, seeking a nonracist accurate representation of Africa and Nigeria from a Nigerian (“Chinua Achebe”).
