Despite being the constant underdog and loser in major elections third parties make some significant contribution to the political spectrum in the United States. Third Party Agendas are taken serious by the Democratic and Republican Parties and specific pieces of the Third Party Agendas are sometimes adopted by the two major parties. Third parties give discontented voters other alternatives. The Republican and Democratic Parties have been known to operate in similar styles and third parties give the voter the opportunity to express their discontent. In recent discussion of Democrats and Republican parties, a controversial issue has been whether or not the U.S. should expand their options from more than a two party system. On the one hand, some argue that there should be more choices other than between the two Democrat Party and Republican Party. From this perspective, voters have more of a variety when they vote. On the other hand, some argue that the U.S. should remain as a two party system. In the words of Gary Johnson, one of this view’s main proponents, “The Republicans and Democrats have spent decades trading power back and forth between themselves, and in doing so, have managed to install a two-party duopoly that completely controls America’s political process.” According to this view, Democrats and Republicans are dictating other parties opportunities to get elected. Third parties offer voters an alternative to the same two parties that run in the presidential election every four years, often with more concrete goals and views, yet there has never been successful third party candidate. For over one and a half centuries, the Republicans and Democrats have held a duopoly over the United States government (Diamond 2015). People have been growing more and more frustrated in their government and the two parties, so why haven’t third-party candidates gained any ground in the political sphere?

In his essay “Polarized Parties Are Good for America”, Matthew Yglesias asserts that the two-party system is ideal for America. He begins by stating that polarization is bad for elites, as it leaves little to no room for “self-styled players”. He then suggests that the two-party system is beneficial for voters, insisting that having clearly labeled candidates creates a “menu” that allows the masses to know what they’re voting for from the start. In a political atmosphere where it is easy to be grouped up in either conservative or liberal, it is harder to see such an easy split more and more each day. Non-traditional candidates are now emerging into the political arena that in prior elections would have been scoffed at. Whether we are talking about the unusually high polling Libertarian candidate, Gary Johnson, the Democratic Socialist Bernie Sanders or the Authoritarian Republican Nominee, Donald Trump, It is getting harder and harder to ignore the rise they are having. The two major political parties will have to adapt to these emerging ideologies or face the threat of the dreaded “third party”.

Today’s economy centers itself around the political parties today that are created with the intent of efficiently demonstrating the many shared opinions of thousands of individuals across the United States. Among them all, the two parties that attract the most attention are Democrats and Republicans who are often seen constantly creating tension among each other and campaigning/competing for political control in our country. But there are other parties such as third or minor parties whom are denied chances to express their views. One of the reasons why a third party is likely to lose is because it doesn’t have the money to campaign like the other two parties. Since laws don’t forbid advertising, the stronger parties campaign a lot using their big budget which results in third parties and Individuals getting left behind in the political race. People also hesitate to vote for third parties or Individuals because they’re afraid that their votes would go towards a losing cause. Picking either one of the two parties makes it a lot more easier and simpler for the public to figure out who they should vote for. Nonpartisan voters go along with the party that comes closer to representing their interests. They wouldn’t have to pick a party that represents only part of their beliefs if there were more Individuals or parties that completely represented them. Individuals don’t have the choices they want and don’t always stick to the same party. They usually tend to vote for the party seeing how well they are doing compared to the other party for the time

In my opinion, a constituent should cast their vote for a party that represents his or her core values. Although the third party’s power is limited, I do not think people should vote for the major party candidate they dislike less. Hence, if a voter agrees with the third party’s values, they should cast the vote for that party. Moreover, supporting a third party can raise important concerns ignored by the two major parties. Secondly, it may give voters more choices amongst candidates. Finally, new parties may increase voter interest, since less than half of eligible voters participate in the voting booth. After all, the main purpose of creating political parties is to increase political participation.

Although the U.S. has two major political parties, there are other third parties that exist. These third parties contribute to the electoral process despite the fact that they receive less attention. Third parties bring attention to certain issues that may otherwise be ignored by the media and other candidates, which might then lead to government action for that particular issue. Another way third parties contribute is that they are able to provide a voice for people who do not fall under the two main political ideologies and parties. For example, the Libertarians may not have a real chance of winning, but they allow voters to feel that there are politicians who agree with them and that their opinions are left

Political parties are the fundamental building blocks of the systems of government of modern democracies. The Founding Fathers of our nation despised and feared the threat of factions forming inside the government. They viewed such ‘parties’ as threats to the sovereignty of the minority and allowed the majority to inflict tyranny. However, in the modern American political landscape, political parties organize voters, unify similar political positions, and allow the efficient creation of policy. European political parties differ greatly from American parties, due to the governmental system of representation established by the creators of the United States.

Through modern history the winners of presidential elections have been focused on the two major parties that America has. For the past nearly 150 years we have seen the President either have their party affiliation through the Democratic or Republican Party. Even though it is seen that major party candidates dominate the results of the election, it can be seen that third party candidates play a significant role in taking votes away from their opposing candidates. For example, in the 1992 election, third party candidate, Ross Perot gained over 18% of the popular vote. Researchers find that his campaign took away from President Bush and allowed candidate Bill Clinton to win the election, ultimately beating out the sitting President at the time.
