II: Picture Storybook Type: This Is Not My Hat by Jon Klassen is an original fantasy that falls into the talking animal story category, as the main character is a little fish who is capable of human-like thoughts and fashion sense. He fully believes he will get away with the crime of stealing a larger fish’s bowler hat. III: Art and Text Composition, Page Layout and Space Composition is how elements of the illustrations are arranged on the pages. Page layout refers to how the text and illustrations are arranged, as well as the size and shape of the book paper. Space shows how far apart elements within the elements are from each other. In my opinion, these three elements are inseparably intertwined in This Is Not My Hat. The page layout is such that the pages are wider than they are high. This adds to the sense of forward progression as we follow the characters through the story. The text is always situated on when the big fish is being shown, as not to compromise the two page-widths of space that he takes up. This contrasts with the way the text is positioned on the opposite page when the little fish is being shown, adding a sense of scale to the story - he barely takes up any space at all. The illustrations are composed like a landscape photo where the two fish characters are the focus of each picture. The only other element shown is the plant life that sways beneath them. The blackness of the ocean behind them creates a sense of immense and endless space. …show more content…
However. The use of space and page layout help keep the reader focused on the two main characters and the forward momentum of the
The undefined characters of the story only seem to help accelerate the action of the story.
Though initially, the changes in point of view can be disorienting, they quickly help the reader to engage with the characters on a deeper level,
The framing of the illustrations enhances the reading experience in a variety of ways. The arrangement of the panels lets the reader know exactly which characters, moments and
Sendak uses layout in an interesting way throughout the book, which feels cinematic in approach. The first six illustrations gradually increase in size, until the illustration fills a single page. It creates a feeling of the viewer zooming in on the scene. It also carries the idea in the text of a forest, that ‘grew and grew- and grew until the ceiling hung with vines and the walls became the world all around’ (Sendak, 2000,p)
When writing any sort of narrative, be it novel or poem, fiction or non-fiction, scholarly or frivolous, an author must take into account the most effective manner in which to effectively convey the message to their audience. Choosing the wrong form, or method of speaking to the reader, could lead to a drastic misunderstanding of the meaning within an author’s content, or what precisely the author wants to say (Baldick 69). Even though there are quite a bit fewer words in a graphic novel than in the average novel, an author can convey just as much content and meaning through their images as they could through 60,000 words. In order to do that though, their usage of form must be thoughtfully considered and controlled. Marjane Satrapi,
The grouping of the frame box and the evened out spacing between them creates a more enjoyable and easier to read comic novel. It is often designed to capture the reader’s attention and keep them entertained; its purpose is initiated to establish a certain mood.
Having only the protagonists point of view limits the information in the story. From the beginning of the
This Is Not My Hat chronicles the tale of a little fish that steals the bowler hat from a much larger fish. Despite his confidence, it becomes clear that he is not as sneaky as he thinks.
The letters and journals help develop differences within the characters by the way they write and talk. It also gives readers a variety of perspectives.
The setting has therefore developed characters, which allow for more action in the book that keeps the audience entertained.
This brings me onto my second element of ‘layout’, and this technique in Night contrasts greatly with Maus because Night all depends on how well written the story is, while in Maus, the illustrations are there to help the reader understand
Words and images create meaning in a book and throughout this novel you could easily tell. “I draw because words are too unpredictable.I draw because words are too limited.”(5) The main character states this when he talks about why he draws, he draws because he wants to speak to the world. While reading the novel the images that are drawn help you understand more of how the main character feels and what’s going on around him. I believe the author showed illustrations as well to show the readers what they can’t picture alone and have them more engaged in the book. An illustration on page 22 really caught my attention, it’s a brain in a fish tank with another fish. I really liked this illustration because this is how he thinks of his brain because
