After reviewing all three of the hierarchies, what are your thoughts regarding our education system and where it is headed? Does it really pay to go to college and get a degree? If the cost of education is rising, why are teachers’ salaries being cut? Where are your educational tax dollars going? Do you
Education in America is one of the most important issues that face our nation. If the education in America is not thought of one of most serious issues we face, our nation as a whole will fall. There are many debates and they seemly extend to all walks of life. The debates range from the decline in education, school vouchers, and the no child left behind law. As a nation, the United States is ranked above others. We must search for that solution to all of the pro’s and con’s in education. The solution should allow all walks of life to excel in the education realm. After all, the children of today will be the leaders of tomorrow.
There are many problems in the American public education system today. Some of those include the quality of teachers, who have no real passion for the job, and are only allowed to remain in the position because of tenure privileges. Another issue is the state budgets that are allowed for public schools, with some states investing billions of dollars, and others prioritizing it lower on the list. In hot debate today is standardized testing, and the negative effect that it has on high school education, with the limits it places on teachers and what they have time to teach in the classrooms.
Nowadays the United States is not known for their educational system. Countries like South Korea, Japan, and Singapore have surpassed the United States buy large margins, in terms of educational success. While other countries are constantly revolutionising their education system, the United States’ education system has not changed in decades, leaving the U.S. unsuccessful. The U.S. continues to fall behind these same countries that are thriving. Due to the fact that the U.S. education system not developing as time went on, leaving them now with a multitude of flaws. The gap between the educated and non-educated, along with the length of how long students are in elementary and high school, are two consequential problems in the United States’ educational system that need to be addressed.
By seeing the system as this we see contribute to the problem. How many educators have come into the field wanting to implement great changes to the flawed classist system that exists? How many of those educators have become burnt out and left? How many have simply given up on change and accepted the system that they are part of? If the answer is one it is too many.
Our basic problem in our educational system is that the credit that is earned is not properly given to the precipitants that deserve it. The immediate needs for our educational system is not about more money or better teachers but simply a widespread of F’s given. The title of the article, “What our Education System is more F’s.” by Carol Singleton, a professor at Fort Hayes State University. Sparking an interesting topic that has effectively betrayed the readers attrition. He argues that Americans do not actually care about their education as long as there is not disturbance, and everything seems to be working fine. Students, parents, teachers and school administrators do not care if the material is being mastered when the student is “passing”
In this article the author explains how the schools are based on a class system and higher-class areas have better recourses and more classes offered. Higher-class societies have better equipment, new technology, modern facilities, better books, and better teachers. Not only are the school’s educational facilities better the extracurricular activities are also better. For example sports facilities, training facilities, band, art, all because these lower class schools cant afford what these lower class schools can. Students in lower end districts are actually ending up worse off then the higher end students. Meaning attrition rate, drop out rate, sat scores and much more.
My peers and past teachers would agree that I had not been affected by the system, but what matters to me is the performance of my peers in the classes of 2018 and above and the hopefully upward trend of improvement. I concede that lessons I learned in school helped me improve my critical thinking and academic schools, but it helped build my character. I appreciate the education I received, but I do believe we need change because one success story cannot compare to thousands of children who the system failed. America, we need to fix something
While reading the piece, “Straight from the source: What works for fist-generation college students” I was somewhat conflicted. I applaud the state of Texas for taking steps in order to increase enrollment of first-generation students in higher education institutions, However, I feel like these steps aren’t addressing the bigger issue; that being the broken education system in America. Until this bigger issue is addressed and the problem is dealt with from the root, anything that is done will only be addressing the symptoms caused by the real problem which is America’s broken education system.
The film Waiting for Superman asks an important question as it examines the failing educational system of the United States. Should we focus on saving our schools or the children who attend them. I say we can only save our society by designing schools whose prime objective is to benefit children despite the many agendas that are counterproductive to that end.
The United States spends more money on education each year than any other country in the world, yet the education system is not thriving. Three decades ago, America was the leader in the quality of high school diplomas, yet, students in the U.S. rate 31st in math literacy and 23rd in science in comparison to the rest of the world. (Federal Reserve Bank of New York) The country that is famous for being the most advanced and innovative country in the world is yielding a generation that is falling behind in the global education race. Public K-12 education is worsening simultaneously with the growing competitiveness of universities. Part of the problem is that teachers are not being paid sufficiently, and many find themselves being laid off. College is getting exponentially more expensive each year. These are only a couple of the issues that the american education system faces today, but the list carries on.
What is it that’s making our country suffer from excelling in education? Very few would argue about the importance of our education system today. Issues such as lazy teachers, lack of parent involvement, and teaching useless information in class may hinder progress in today’s education system. An education plays a crucial role and is an essential tool, unfortunately, with all the jaded judgments; our students are not able to value their education. A proper education can open the doors to many opportunities that would have never been possible if it had not been for the knowledge and preparation that one received while in school. With the growing economy and desperate times, it is more important than ever for our country’s children to receive the proper education and training that is needed to allow them to acquire a good job and produce the revenue needed to live. Today's education system is flawed in many ways, and these flaws should be eliminated to ensure a good education for our future generation.
Ferfolja, Diaz & Ullman (2015) state that neoliberalism education practises have increased hierarchy in schools, with a focus on improving academic outcomes for elite consumers rather than working towards social justice and equity for all (Keddie, 2011). Privileged, competent and capable students succeed in a neoliberal environment, where as minority backgrounds are in deficit and marginalised through lack of recognition and opportunity (Comber, 2007).
The education system has been a controversial issue among educators. Requirements of school do not let student choose what they want to study for their future. It’s a big issue to force student study specific curriculums, which don’t help them improve, and what they like to create something. Educators choose a general system for education to all students which based on general knowledge. Intelligent or genius students have to be in that system of education, which doesn’t let them improve their creativity. Educators attempt to change that system to make it better, but their changing was not that great to be an example for the world. Also, did that change qualify education system to compete other systems or not? In some examples and
Institutions are in place in our society to aid in controlling people to a certain extent in order to keep a peaceful, orderly and organized system. In our lives we have our families controlling our lives to certain extents in order for us to be safe and be educated about our culture. Educational institutions play another important role by informing us about the world and its current situation as well as preparing us for our future professions. Religious institutions are one more social institution that factor in to our lives and how the society moves ahead as it can cause people to be for or against ideas. It implants an ideology into the human brain which can direct responses to different situations as well. Economic institutions command how much wealth we possess. Political institution are probably the biggest authority in our lives. They control every other social institution that I have mentioned above due to their power. Cathy Davidson mentions in her article about the political institutions creating hierarchy and how her idea of collective collaboration would facilitate in making education break free from the hierarchy system. Steven Johnson would agree with Davidson’s idea of moving away from political institutions in order to achieve his own goals of having a self- organized system. Johnson states, “All you need are thousands of individuals and a few simple rules of interaction.” (Miller, 199) Even Johnson thinks that we should have some rules in order to maintain a
The educational system is one of the most important elements of modern society, it has as main objective to allow a large part of society to receive the same kind of education and training to throughout life. The education system also has other functions such as the socialization of individuals. Meanwhile, parents who are also known as mentors; have the obligation to care, feed, and educate their children. These mentors are determinants in the future and development of their children as a person in society. We live in a world in which we must strive every day to achieve and fit in society, where everyone should express a healthy coexistence, mutual respect and in where the practice of values and morality are taught through our parents.
