When tasked with choosing my favorite sport out of the three Mandelbaum focused on in The Meaning of Sports, I found it to be harder than I originally thought it would be. Personally, I never really became as invested in baseball as I have in football and basketball, so I could eliminate “America’s Pastime” from the running immediately. However, between football and basketball, it was difficult to choose which one is my favorite. After comparing the two on criteria such as watching, playing, and other ways to interact with the game, I have given the slight edge to basketball as being my favorite sport.
While I prefer to watch football on television, I would much rather attend a basketball game in person. The intimate environment provides a great atmosphere for watching a game. The roar of the crowd being amplified by the walls of the arena makes the sounds of an open football stadium pale in comparison. When combining the electric atmosphere with continuous action, going to a basketball game never disappoints. Since basketball is known as a “game of runs,” the feeling that no lead is ever safe adds to the tension in the air during important games.

I enjoyed how Mandelbaum made an argument that the love of sports could be considered comparable to practicing a religion. While the idea sounds farfetched at first, Mandelbaum provided great examples of how the eight categories of religion are reflected in sports. I also found it helpful that Mandelbaum focused on each sport in-depth. By structuring the book like this, it was easy to follow and made it easy to compare and contrast the three sports. Overall, I feel that Mandelbaum’s book was beneficial to me and provided a solid foundation for the rest of what I learn in Sport & Recreation
