When tasked with choosing my favorite sport out of the three Mandelbaum focused on in The Meaning of Sports, I found it to be harder than I originally thought it would be. Personally, I never really became as invested in baseball as I have in football and basketball, so I could eliminate “America’s Pastime” from the running immediately. However, between football and basketball, it was difficult to choose which one is my favorite. After comparing the two on criteria such as watching, playing, and other ways to interact with the game, I have given the slight edge to basketball as being my favorite sport.
While I prefer to watch football on television, I would much rather attend a basketball game in person. The intimate environment provides a great atmosphere for watching a game. The roar of the crowd being amplified by the walls of the arena makes the sounds of an open football stadium pale in comparison. When combining the electric atmosphere with continuous action, going to a basketball game never disappoints. Since basketball is known as a “game of runs,” the feeling that no lead is ever safe adds to the tension in the air during important games.
When it comes to actually playing the game, I have always liked playing basketball more as well. I never

I enjoyed how Mandelbaum made an argument that the love of sports could be considered comparable to practicing a religion. While the idea sounds farfetched at first, Mandelbaum provided great examples of how the eight categories of religion are reflected in sports. I also found it helpful that Mandelbaum focused on each sport in-depth. By structuring the book like this, it was easy to follow and made it easy to compare and contrast the three sports. Overall, I feel that Mandelbaum’s book was beneficial to me and provided a solid foundation for the rest of what I learn in Sport & Recreation
Sports are prominent in today’s culture more than ever. Almost everyone watches them, has a favorite team, or even competes in sports, but this wasn't always the case. In the early 1800’s, Americans were opposed to sports. Organized sports like the ones that we have today were not common at all. The idea of sports wasn’t even on the radar of most people.
Abstract: Society is affected every day by many different kinds of sports. These sports often govern society's way of life. People all over the nation turn their TVs to sporting events, such as golf, during the weekends. Scott Stossel states that "more than six million Americans enjoy watching golf on the weekends." Parents use sports as a teaching tool for their children. Kids learn teamwork and discipline from team sports programs and sports have also helped many students with their grades. Kids who want to compete in school sports are taught to keep their grades up or they won't be able to play, but the greedy coaches and schools often look around grades to keep their "star athletes" in the games. Adults have
In Jeffrey Schranks’ short story, “Sport and the American Dream”, he is trying to show us that the sport America watches and plays, portrays America’s character as a nation. Since America goes from baseball to football we it shows us that we are becoming more violent. his comparisons of sports and war is says best how America changes as a country over the years. Back when baseball was Americas’ pastime to being a totally football country. When we were a baseball country, Americans were happier, not many cared about wars or violence just the enjoyment they got from watching the games with friends or family at the ballpark. It didn’t matter that the sport wasn’t moving at a fast pace or so competitive. Football is the
Sports are something that everyone in the world, regardless of age, sex, or nationality, can enjoy. Whether it's a child playing in his first t-ball game or a professional athlete swimming in the Olympics and everyone in between, sports can connect almost everyone. Fan support and overall devotion for athletic competition has raised professional athletes to superstars and national icons; Super Bowl Sunday is a national holiday to some, and sports are one of the largest moneymakers in the economy.
“Rejected by Rose,” screamed, TNT broadcaster, Kevin Harlan. Derrick Rose’s block on Rajon Rondo’s shot was the play that forced game 7 and kept the Bull’s season alive. The 2009 first round series between the Chicago Bulls and the reigning NBA champions, Boston Celtics was the best playoff series I ever watched. What does Rose’s late-game heroics have to do with anything? The excitement of the sport of basketball. My paper will be about my favorite sport to watch and play I will also mention about my favorite sport to participate in ancillary. Afterward, I will relate my favorite sport to Michael Mandelbaum’s The Meaning of Sports and offer my opinion on the book.
Sports of old were merely competitive activities rooted in heroism and romanticism. Sports activities today, however, have no such innocence or simplicity. Currently in America, the activities that make up our sports culture is not only the competitive events themselves but the processes and issues that underlie and surround them. Entwined in our sports culture is the giant business of mass broadcasting. Indeed, sports and the media go hand in hand like peanut butter and jelly, like Mickey and Minnie, Darth Vader and Luke. They are intertwined and depend on each other to continue to grow. Sports media includes television, radio, magazines, newspapers, books, films, and, now, most importantly, social media devices provided by the
As we moved on history, depending on the period of time that we find ourselves in, a particular sport would be important as people relate their lives into it. Mandelbaum focus on three different sports and three different time periods, to show us their relationship. He states that, sports come to play an important role in our lives as we are able relate and find a significance that represent and fits our lives. This is the explanation Mandelbaum reaches when we tries to explain why Americans had become ardent fans of sports. The three major American sports that Mandelbaum focus on are baseball, football and basketball. This sports had been chosen for America because they embody three major stages in American culture. Baseball represents the agrarian period, football the industrial revolution and basketball the new innovative and modern society.
1..An American Apotheosis, written by Joseph L. Price, discusses the religious element of sports. His thesis, “For tens of millions of devoted fans throughout the country, sports constitute a popular form of religion by shaping their world and sustaining their ways of engaging it.” (Price, p. 196) Takes on the difficult challenge of defining sport as religion. This is done through Price’s exploration of how sports shape and engage the world for the millions of devoted fans in America, how sports enable participants to explore levels of selfhood, how sports establish a means for bonding with the devotee community, how sports model ways to deal with fate while playing by the rules and how sports provide the prospect of experiencing abundant life.
Sports, games, and politics are associated with one another more than most people think. This 2010 documentary, called Not Just a Game: Power, Politics & American Sports, is produced by Chris Boulton, Jeremy Earp, Scott Morris, and Jason Young and written by Dave Zirin, Jeremy Earp & Chris Boulton. The video is based on the bestselling book A People’s History of Sports in the United States by Dave Zirin that displays how the American sports have been, for many decades, revolved around major political struggles and debates. Dave Zirin is the author of five bestseller books and the host of Edge of Sports Radio station. This hour long video is broken down into five segments: the introduction, in the Arena, like a girl, breaking the color barrier,
For me Basketball is my sanctuary not the cort. This is because while i'm practicing by myself there is no stress no one yelling no excitement just a mindless act of repeating an act of putting the ball through the hoop. And for some reason it's incredibly relaxing to see the ball to go through the hoop to know the you just accomplished your task perfectly. This
Sports are something watched all over the world rather it is basketball, football, hockey or just tennis. There is to be 30 teams throughout the states in this league of basketball. While others say the game of basketball is boring, I beg to differ. When fans of the National Basketball Association (NBA) watch the different basketball games on television it takes them to a whole different world, the world of excitement. Now if you are not a sports lover you may ask “Well, what makes for an exciting game?” An exciting game can be anything you make it out to be. Exciting can be all the little
I really found this book fascinating and helpful to read because it covered the problems in the sports industry that is always overseen by the audience. The well detailed information i’ve gotten from this book made me look at the world of sports much differently.
American society has many different types’ sports from all around the world. For example, the main two contemporary sports are basketball and football. Both sports require people, a ball, and open area to play in. However, these two sports are played differently. By comparing and contrasting basketball and football, we can examine them in terms of how they’re played, the amount of people in each teams, and the location the sports are being played in.
Sports in society today can be entertaining to watch and also fun to play for both men and women of all ages. I am a person that takes sports very seriously in my life. I enjoy playing sports as much as I enjoy watching them on television. I started playing baseball when I was seven years old, and played up until I graduated high school. I also played basketball from fifth grade to a junior in high school. I think that I am so involved in sports because my family takes sports very seriously, and they got me involved in them at an early age. My Dad, Mom, brothers and cousins have all been active members of sports throughout their lives. We all enjoy doing anything involved with sports. It could be
Basketball, on the other hand is played inside on a court. There are only five players per team on the court at a time. Players have to play both offense and defense simultaneously. The scoring in basketball is also different; points can be scored in increments of one, two and three, these are scored by shooting the ball into a hoop. Basketball is a game that is played by skilled people who can jump high, shoot well, and have great ball handling skills. Playing basketball requires you to have to have endurance, because running from offense to defense and back to offense requires you to be in great shape. Basketball is played at a medium pace and can be very exciting and nail biting.
