Tim Burton: A True Hero

Tim Burton is one of the most unusual and unique directors of our time. He brings characters to life by putting them in a habitat they don’t belong. His movies “Alice in Wonderland”, “The Corpse Bride”, “Charlie and the chocolate factory”, and “Edward Scissorhands” all demonstrate how one of a kind his movies are. Using cinematic techniques, Tim Burton points out the misfit character and shows how different they are then everyone else. His use of camera angles, lighting, and sound give the viewers a different perspective on the movies, and help pick out the individual character.

Inspired by Roald Dahl and Vincent Price, director Tim Burton is easily one of the most remarkable and creative directors of his generation. Burton has a unique and individual way of challenging the minds of viewers and attracting individuals to his films, and has been using this technique for over 30 years. His ways persuade the audience to change the mood they have toward the film. When people think of a hero, they do not understand you don't need to be just like superman, you don't need to be able to fly, or be immortal and never die. There is no need to wear a mask, save the world, or have special powers. To me, any regular person can become a hero in their own way. I believe a hero can be found in any piece of literature, most main characters are all heroes, but they are all heroes in a different way. To me, in order to be a hero, all you need to do is put someone else's life in front of your own, if you can change someone else's life you can then call yourself a hero. Aristotle once said that a tragic hero is "one who does not fall into misfortune though vice or depravity, but falls because of some mistake".

There are many variations when definitions what is a hero. Some people think of a hero as being someone who is strong, intelligent, attractive, and daring others think of capes and superhuman powers. Typically our perception of a hero changes with maturity and life experiences. Heroes have many different qualities that can be overlooked such as honesty, patience, compassion, and forgiveness. Merriam Webster’s simple definition of a hero is a person who is admired for great or brave acts or fine qualities (cited).

A hero is an ordinary individual who finds the strenght and bravery to overcome overwhelming obstacles. A hero is someone who has given their life to something bigger than oneself. People think thought time create heros, but on the contrary, it is during the tough times that the hero within us is revealed. A hero is someone who willingly walks into the unknown. Todd Beamer was extremely brave and made the ultimate sacrifice to save many others becoming a true hero on a terrible day.

Through Tim Burton’s films viewers are taken on a unique journey, to unimaginable places with peculiar characthers. All of Burton’s films are all different from each other, as well as from mainstream movies. However, all of his films follow a similar concept. Joseph Campbell, an american mythologist, once said “The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek”. So is a hero a person that is brave enough to unearth the treasure? As a mythologist, Joseph Campbell studied myths from all over the world, and came to a conclusion that all heroes: Batman, Odysseus, Beowulf, or Tom Cruise, undergoes the same cycle.

Many people believe that fitting in and conforming to the ideas of what someone should look or act like is how you find happiness within society. However, Tim Burton’s childhood of being set apart and its influence on his directing choices portray how diversity among the people in this world seems to bring more joy to life. Through the use of abnormal characters and color contrast, Burton delivers the idea that when one is different, the world is more colorful. In his movies, Burton uses color contrast to emphasize how the unknown places that people fear or can’t comprehend might surprise them.

Superman played by the role of Christopher Reeve is known all around the world and his quote deserves to be well known just like him. Heroes are not just people who save people’s lives. A lot of people think that is the meaning of hero, but it isn’t. A hero puts people first before themselves. A hero doesn’t need to get paid or be told to save a person’s life. A hero could be described as your knight and shining armour. A knight and shining armor would be someone who is humble, kind, generous, bold, brave, someone who would stand up for you or something that is right. My hero would be someone who cares and someone I could look up to. Heroes could be a person, an animal, because it doesn’t matter what color they are or even what they are because no matter what, their characteristics and their actions are what make them heroes.

Even though his childhood wasn’t that great and he had to work hard to be noticed. He succeeded in building a career for himself and enjoy it as well. Burton is an idol and has never made a dull film.
