From the very first day that I have been in the nursing program, holistic, patient centered care has been at the forefront of our education. Though this concept may seem simple in definition, in execution, I found found it to be much more complex. Through my clinical experience this semester, I have had many great opportunities to experience what holistic care looks like and I think it is incredibly important to recognize exactly how to implement it into everyday care. By utilising techniques such as effective time management, collaboration and being self-aware, I feel as though I have been able to expand my skillset and provide care that has been appropriate and met patient needs.
Time Management So far, one of the most important lessons I have learnt from clinical is that time management is absolutely crucial to being able to provide quality health care. At the very beginning of this clinical rotation, I felt overwhelmed trying to find things, getting organized and completing tasks in an efficient way. I do not, however, feel like I was alone in this as I have also noticed incredible improvement in these areas with my peers through the course of the term. Once I had become more familiar with the facility, expectations of me as a student, and routine of the unit, I was able to become more efficient and build upon my critical thinking skills. Although I thought my organizational skills and time management skills were good prior to this semester, I had to have a little bit of a reality check and push myself further. To me, at this point in clinical practice, time management not only includes completing tasks in a timely fashion, but also includes “scheduling” times to have an RN or instructor present to witness a skill and seeking out learning opportunities for both myself and my peers. This is an area that I continue to strive to improve in as I know that my overall efficiency will improve with practice, and that this will become increasingly important as staff to patient ratios may cause care provider strain when I enter the workforce after graduation.
Practicing holistic care when one has little time with a patient is another challenge in itself. I think providing holistic care to patients on days where
Developing my holistic nursing practice or looking at who I have become as a nurse today has been a journey that has helped defined who I am today. When I look back at when I originally became a nurse over 16 years ago, I am proud of who I have become. When I finished nursing school and began my job as a new nurse I thought I had all the tools to be the best nurse I could be. I understood the nursing process, I recognized the skills needed at the bedside to be a nurse, and I felt I had great nursing documentation skills. Soon I learned that wasn’t all of what I needed.
America’s health care system has become very complex with a rise in health costs, patients with complex medical issues, and Medicare cuts. Nurses must find a way to juggle the health care industry while maintaining positive patient outcomes. Patients will either have good or bad outcomes during or after their care based on the decisions of the nurse and the interdisciplinary team. The new goal in healthcare is for outcomes to be patient centered. This means that the patient is looked at holistically and also that the patient is equally involved in the care planning process as the nursing and medical staff. This
The unprecedented growth in the world technological scope in the biomedical discipline has led to high specialization in the health sector making almost all disease curable. Contrary to curing a myriad of diseases, there are several ailments that require long-term rehabilitation process. Contemporarily, health in the medical field is intertwined concept with individual well-being in a given set up rather than what many are accustomed to as the absence of ailments with the presence of diseases
As I began to pursue my dream to become a nursing professor, I realized there a was a knowledge deficit; not a total lack of awareness, but definitely an opportunity to grow as a holistic practitioner. I have always been an advocate for my patients, but the concept of wellness in wholeness is very intriguing and an area of growth for me. As a nurse leader, I am learning self-care is essential to caring for others; living a full life can be a challenge. I am learning to take time for myself and to encourage those I have a direct connection with to do the same. When leaders learn they share and teach others the lessons they learned. As an aspiring professor, I feel very fortunate that my nursing school emphasizes holistic care because I
This is where teamwork comes into play. Having a supportive team that you can depend on and ask for help when needed is crucial in accomplishing your daily chores. Planning your day in advance by setting goals and noting what priority is, can help you maximize the time you spend on each patient and immensely improve your time management skills. Be realistic not to take up more projects than you can handle. As the CLPNA code of ethics states that collaborating “with colleagues in a cooperative, constructive and respectful manner with the primary goal of providing safe, competent, ethical, and appropriate care to individuals” will decrease stress and immensely reduce time spent on each
Holistic Care is seen as the way in which the patient is cared for as a whole by looking not just at their physical or medical needs but also at their spiritual, psychological and social needs while in the clinical setting (Johns C. 2012, Rushton L. 2014). One of the main outcomes for holistic care is patients receiving the best standard of care and also patient satisfaction in their care. This is due to the patient being cared for in a way that doesn’t just look at their disease and uses person-centered care instead of the traditional medical model of nursing (McGeorge N. 2010). In order to adequately care for the patients that we see in clinical settings we must look at them holistically and not care for them solely using the medical model of nursing. Holistic care is especially important for patients who are under-going surgery, like this patient who was getting a short gamma nail placed in her femur, as it helps to promote healing post-operatively by encouraging compliance with the care they need. It also helps to reduce the anxiety felt by the patient as they feel they are not being ignored by the staff looking after them (Selimen D. 2011). I am going to reflect upon this entry using The Reflective Cycle by Gibbs (1988), taking the description and feelings stages together as it is difficult to write about them separately as together they
I agree with you regarding holistic medicine, not only patients but physicians are also taking the holistic approach to treatment of patients. Along with medical intervention, patient education on lifestyle changes and self-care can promote wellness. Patient’s diet, exercise, psychotherapy, relationship and spiritual counseling may play a role in healing and recovering from a patient.
As a healthcare provider, the main goal is to give a patient the best care and to make them feel comfortable. Traditional medicine is concerned with only the physical dimensions of a person and usually narrowed down the patient's’ illness and disease. In a hectic world of health care, the patient is reduced to his or her disease Blais and Hayes (2016). Holistic healthcare is another form of medicine. It treats the “whole” like the mind a spirit. Also, the treatment does not just focus on the patient's illness or disease. There are many aspects of holistic care and also job opportunities. One in particular is holistic nursing.
Currently in healthcare, the vision of holistic, patient-centered care is not being successfully achieved. Holism, as an entity within healthcare, lacks research. Studies confirm that challenges in conducting research in this area are that both patients and healthcare providers have different perceptions regarding patient-focused care, and in the basic knowledge as to what holistic care encompasses. Another factor involves terminology variances regarding patient-centered care, integrative care, and holistic care making data collection difficult. Alignment of terminology, and acknowledgement of the important facet of holistic care among healthcare professionals and the public, is imperative in improving patient care and outcomes. Cultivating
One aspect of time management in my practicum experience that stood out to me is how in home health you set your own schedule and time to meet with patients A lot of home health is based on making time for charting, driving, breaks, and appointments with patients so that it is congruent with an eight hour shift. It can be very challenging to make your schedule feasible for all patients. Also, if patients don’t answer their phone in the morning it makes it very difficult to set appointment times for the day. There were times during my clinical experience where a patient would be called in the morning to set a time for their visit, they wouldn’t answer so a message would be left, and then there would be no call back all day. That means the next
This is holistic care in nursing that extends not only to the patients but their families. If my mind is sick, it will affect how I treat my body physically and will reflect the outcome of my day. I want to know the plan of my care, the treatment, and the possible outcome. I also want to be respected for who I am and my belief to be valued always. The three themes of meaning, rhythmicity, and transcendence are valuable resources that I will use to better off my patients’ care.
Some people call holistic healing new age but there is really nothing new about it. Socrates suggested that we should avoid focusing on just one sick part of the body saying that “for the part can never be well unless the whole is well (Munoz, H. E., 2013).” As a nurse educator, my personal philosophy is based on the principle that all students are deserving of a holistic education that provides care which integrates physiological, psychological and spiritual aspects of the person’s life. Thus, allowing a student to discover themselves, their hunger for education, their strengths and weaknesses as well as their full capabilities. Students must be taught so that they can learn to become problem solvers and critical thinkers. By integrating teaching and learning theories that will allow the students to socialize during the learning process, allows students to teach as well as learn from one another. Providing students with access to hands-on activities and allowing adequate time and space to use materials
Just like the deeds of its founder, I practice holistic nursing and help all my patients just like a parent. I look after all their small needs and often indulge in developing a strong relationship with them. I try to feel their suffering and pain and often instill hope and confidence in my patient’s life. I try to keep a proper hygiene and a neat and clean environment for all my patients. In my days of training as a nurse assistant, I had the opportunity to offer holistic nursing and self-care to many elderly patients as I was employed at a nursing

Most of us need the Internet to get things done. We browse to finish our school assignments or we use the Internet to perform work tasks. Even some of our household tasks from shopping for groceries and finding a plumber take place online. But the Internet is not just a source of knowledge – it’s also an entertaining place with online games, social media and other such attractions and distractions to keep us busy. Most of the time, you go online to get something important done, only to find yourself looking at cat videos on YouTube.
