Journal #16: Extra Credit Today’s class began with a survey over Dr. Swan and his teaching. Since this took up approximately 15 minutes, we did not begin our class discussion over Samuel Johnson until 12:45. Although we were shorted by a few minutes, we still were able to go into our discussion and use the rest of the class time provided for it. Firstly, Dr. Swan pulled up Google Images for scrofula. This was a term I had heard of, but did not really understand what it was. From the images, I was able to see it caused facial swelling with red bumps on the neck and face. We had read about Samuel Johnson before class, so we were aware that he had scrofula. Although he had it, he was painted from the side that did not have the swelling. In …show more content…
I cannot imagine having a disease that causes red bumps on my face. With that, I would feel so insecure and sad if people made fun of me for it. Especially since it is uncontrollable for him. Although many people do have nervous ticks such as mumbling and twitching, that still would be really hard to get passed when talking to people. I can imagine how insecure I would be about talking to anyone that are not my close friends. Thinking about meeting new people would frighten me even more because I would be nervous about how they would judge me for my constant twitching and how I look. Luckily, he was able to shine through those setbacks with his writing that would make him historically famous in British literature. He can be a model to prove that no matter what you look like, you can still achieve a lot that has nothing to do with your looks. I think that’s something that modern people tend to forget about now since we often compare ourselves to people in the media. Sometimes looking at famous women makes me feel like I can’t be successful unless I look a specific way. The “normal” way. But, I remind myself that we are all more than our appearances and flaws. Working hard is what is important in our lives. With that, I’m glad we learning about Samuel Johnson today because it reminded me to work hard for the rest of the semester to gain what I want. I could literally
Johnson seems to understand the importance of establishing trustworthiness and credibility among his listeners, knowing that in order to be heard, he must prove that he is a reliable character. His allusions are both biblical and historical, to assure his audience that he does not stand alone in his cause—that many people, in his time or a century ago, also share this view. He does this biblically, when asking “what is a man profited if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?” (Paragraph10), and also historically when he states that “all men are created equal” (Paragraph 12). He does this to create ethos, or an ethical appeal. When his audience, the Congress, is considered, these allusions become even more important to earning their

History class this past week consisted of lecture, class discussion, and our weekly exam. The topics discussed during this session were interesting and informative. The lecture content stimulated thought-provoking questions which lead to high student engagement level. The lecture for this week was easier follow in comparison to the lecture last week and I walked away with a better understanding of the subject matter.
Samuel Sewall can be considered a valiant figure in history. On its face, it seems paradoxical that one of the magistrates presiding over the brutal Salem witch trials should earn such a gallant label. However, Sewall was a courageous, forward thinker far ahead of his time. Aside from being the only judge to publicly apologize for his dealings in the witch trials, he attempted to invalidate slavery in his anti-slavery tract The Selling of Joseph. While these accomplishments may not be impressive to someone of the twenty-first century, it is important to keep in mind he did this during the Puritan era hence accepting the risk of being ostracized or possibly worse. The Diary of Samuel Sewall is a piece of colonial history that is not often written or spoken about but gives us a direct glimpse into Puritan culture and the personal ideology of this private Puritan man.
CLASS is the most recent failure at the federal level to create a national program that provides long-term care insurance. The ACA attempted to work around the fact by making CLASS a voluntary and self-sustaining program under difficult political constraints, policymakers tried to walk a narrow line; they aimed to offer a substantial benefit. CLASS would have been unsustainable and would still have left beneficiaries exposed to substantial costs. One positive note, CLASS brought long-term care back onto the federal policy agenda after a 20 years absence, serving as an important reminder that the nation's current to financing long-term care is adequate.
In reading the Top 10 Thing Middle- School Students Wish You Knew, Rachel Vail states that middle schoolers “sometimes I just can’t focus.” I agree with that statement. I want to learn, I just have the urge to daydream. Daydreaming is an escape mechanism which I have always done. I've realized that one must be focused in order to maintain good grades, which I find very challenging. When I find myself daydreaming, I sometimes have to pinch myself to get back on task. Even while reading I find my mind wandering the pages. None of these habits are good to have in order to keep your grades high.
Class Discussion #4: Chapters 5 & 6 (Health Care and End of Life Decisions and video)
Then there is generalized erythema rapidly followed by the development of flaccid blisters and desquamation, as seen in this patient. The mucous membranes are not involved, which is also consistent with our patient. The surrounding areas of her face were involved, but the mucous membranes were spared. This condition is also associated with a positive Nikolsky sign. A Nikolsky sign is the ability to extend the area of superficial sloughing by applying gentle lateral pressure on the surface of the skin at an apparently uninvolved site. This was found incidentally in our patient when the adhesive tape of an IV line was removed resulting in sloughing off of the skin below it. Furthermore, due to the sloughing off of skin with pressure, there tends to be increased desquamation in areas of mechanical stress like the flexural areas, buttocks, hands, and feet. If SSSS is suspected, cultures should be obtained from the blood, the urine, the nasopharynx, the perianal area, and any other abnormal skin or suspected focus of infection. The intact bullae are sterile and will come back without growth. In this patient, blood cultures had no growth to date and the pan-cultures from the mouth, nares, eyes, and anus were non-specific. Diagnosis for SSSS is usually clinical, although it may be confirmed with skin biopsy that shows a cleavage plane in the lower stratum
Week two of my classroom handbook will be of the topic problem solving skills used during conflict in the classroom. Kaiser and Rasminsky suggest a five step process that will effectively teach children at the early childhood level problem solving skills to last a life time. I will go over each step and then provide an example of what this process might look like in a classroom.
I chose to take LABR 1F99 as one of my elective classes mainly because I think it will help me to get a better understanding of how our world functions. I believe that there is always a reason why people chose to perform a certain work, people choices influence not only their individual lives but the political environment as well. As a future politician I think the knowledge that this class will provide me will shape my mind in way so I can see what has to be changed on a government level in order to create a better, safer living conditions for its citizens.
It is unfortunate that racism and sexism continues to exist in today’s generation. I really do not understand the differences between skin color or gender. I am not sure if the misunderstanding is because I grew up in a diverse community or my eyes and heart are blind. I am proud that I have raised my son to also have eyes and heart that are blind to color and gender. As a single parent I have had to change my tire and oil and with that same perspective, I will have my son wash his own clothes. I have shared with my son, if a woman can do the job, so can a man and vice-versa. In the video, A Class Divided, Jane Elliott, the third grade teacher shared a new perspective that was creative and perceptible and ethical. We are all humans with the same color of blood
I would like to give a realistic assessment of the diverse ways to pay for my education as a result of the ACA class and personal research. As demonstrated in the power point presentation there are five types of financial aids discussed. Significantly important to me were grants and scholarships, due to the fact you do not repay any money back. As a perfect illustration of a frugal person to pay for their education these formulate an appositive route for me to take. The ramifications of my impoverishment has lead me to pursue additional grants and scholarships for my schooling and living expenses. Although there are other forms of financial aid, I am disabled, I have found the other viable financial aid that might be able to benefit my
It is my pleasure to write this letter to all of you and tell you how wonderful this College 100 class is. When I first came to college, I didn’t know how to study correctly or techniques on how to take good notes. After learning it with Mr. Carr, I realized that it is important to understand these basic things in college so that when you take other classes, you would get confused on anything.
One part in the reading that class seemed to be of importance was also during the time that Earnest and Lady Bracknell were discussing
In the school year of 2014-2015, the science class that I had taken was Honors IPS. My original teacher was Mrs. McCartney, however towards the end of the year she had a baby so our substitute was Mr. Gero. I signed up for Honors Biology because I wanted to take something more challenging for my mind, and also because I wanted to aim higher than just the standard class. Something that I excel at is art, more specifically drawing people. Art is my passion and I have been drawing people since I was a child. During the school year, the things that take up the majority of my time are schoolwork and extracurricular activities. Extracurricular activities include music lessons for piano and violin, and hip hop. In the class, I can take on a passive
