Blended learning is a combination of multiple approaches for teaching. It is where a mix of different learning methods that together in learning and teaching (Garrison & Vaughan, 2008). The methods are the traditional learning method and online learning. Traditional learning is face to face teaching. This type of method is where the students will listen to the instructor through visual, whiteboard, case studies and etc. It is an immediate interaction as the students have a chance to ask question or doubts to the teacher right there and then. By doing this, they get to participate more actively in class and they also will have an opportunity for them to learn something new from their fellow classmates. Students learn through an online portal. A known example of such portal is Wawasan Learn. Wawasan Learn is an open university’s portal or also known as Learning Management System (LMS) that is supported by Moodle. Everyone would be aware by now that online learning is very convenient as it is a very flexible learning method. One do not have to travel long distance to learn when they can just use their electronic device such as computer, laptop, ipad, tablets and etc with internet access to learn from their online lesson. One example of how online schools can improve student learning was shown in a study by the SRI international department of education. The researcher Steve Lohr conducted a study on mostly college students from the years 1996 to 2008. The researcher performed a quantitative analysis of online versus classroom performance for the same courses. The results for students taking online courses showed that they ranked in the 59th percentile compared to students who took the same courses in traditional schools ranked in the 50th percentile. These results showed that there was a 9 percent difference in the tested performance of college students which indicated that students learn more effectively in online schools versus traditional schools. This example supports the claim that online schools enhance student learning more effectively than traditional schools. Blended Learning...what does it mean to you? If you do a search on the internet, you will find a variety of definitions and resources. However, if I defined blended learning in our school, it would mean combining classroom learning with online learning to differentiate student learning.
Blending learning is in which a student learns the material for their level both online and in a classroom setting (Blended). Blending learning is used in school for numerous of different reasons. The most popular reason is to why they use blending learning is each student learns differently from each other, using blending learning helps the students get different lesson plans in the best way for them, so they can achieve at their highest potential (Five). Also with some topics that are learned it allows the student to be more engaged in the subject matter.
