Today, people in the United States and all over the world continue to live by the principles proposed by the New Testament. The Christians that live by every word of the Bible find their beliefs superior to everyone else's. They believe everyone should be living by the Bible even though the New Testament does not always lead to ethical decisions.
In America today, sexuality is one of the most controversial topics and has been widely disputed for a long time. Sexuality can be seen as a circumstantial phenomenon or something formed at creation. Some Christians today advertise how “God defined a righteous pattern of human sexuality, and that deviation from this pattern is sinful” (Bringing the Case before the Lord, pg 1). They think because God created each person’s sexuality, one should never try to diverge from her or his given sexuality. Today, even though being transgender is becoming more of a social norm, some Christians that believe no one should change their sexuality from what God had granted them. They “affirm that it is sinful to approve of homosexual immorality or transgenderism and that such approval constitutes an essential departure from Christian faithfulness and witness” (Are Evangelicals Inventing). The ethical way would be to love and respect each other regardless of each person's sexuality and differing culture. “There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is no male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus” (Galatians 3).
She takes pride in her well maintained home and cooking expertise. Her schedule is full of running her husband’s errands throughout the day and having the breakfast, lunch and dinner completed that he requests. She finished two years of college courses at a local community college and would love to finish gaining her degree in nursing. The client would love to finish school, but her husband tells her that a degree is unnecessary since she should only be relying on him. Her husband’s attitude makes her feel insufficient and does not feel like a positive role model for her daughters to look up to. The client’s self-esteem is very low and the only time she feels pretty or worthy is when her daughters tell her they love her. She is at a point in her life where her self-worth is nearly destroyed, a place she never would have imagined before marrying her husband.
I agree with the statement Balswick &Balswick stated, “It is a tragedy when people who struggle with sexual identity experience rejection from the Christian community.”(Balswick & Balswick, 2014, p. 234) As Christians we do our best to obey and follow God’s will, but as humans it is in our sinful nature to fall in sin. Just as Adam and Eve did in Genesis 3. We all face struggles in our lives, whether it be within ourselves or outside in the world of society. No sin we face as an individual is any better or worse than another. Never wanting to experience rejection but having a deep desire of wanting to be accepted or understood is something we all long for. With no other love being any better than God’s love, people may seek for the formula
This reading discusses transgender people in the Jewish community. The person undergoing transition and witnesses (closest family) participate in a ritual. This ritual takes place when a person wants to change their gender. A room with a covered mirror is set up for the ritual. The person in transition, wearing a white robe known as a kittel, is washed as if preparing for a mikveh (ritual bath). The person in transition and the witnesses recite verses. Then the person in transition tears his/her clothes, followed by the witnesses. The reciting continues and the witnesses pour three buckets of water over the person as if for a taharah (purification of a dead body). The ritual ends with the person getting a new name and the family welcoming the new form of their child.
Many LGBT people don’t accept their call of accepting their sexuality and living their lives simply because they are pressured or feel that they must adhere to the strict sexual regulations concerning the human sexuality as found in the bible. To illustrate this point, in 1 Timothy, a letter written by the Apostle Paul who was converted from judaism, wrote to his pupil Timothy that the old law of Moses was intended for the “sexually immoral people and practicing homosexuals” (1Tim 1:9-11) which has lead many future christians to believe that homosexual people are immoral and transgress against God since the law was intended to point out the flaws of man and regulate their lives in order for them to live in harmony with God and dwell in his presence in the
Growing up in a Christian, hispanic, home I was taught to believe that any form of gayness, cross dressing, or homosexuality was a sin that should be frowned upon. I also attend a church where those who are gay, transgender, or homosexual are seen as possessing an evil spirit that compel them to act “differently” than the way God intended them to act; which in our religion is following traditional male and female roles. Being hispanic also contributed to this view that any LGBTQ act was a disgrace. Neither one of my family members or even relatives have ever been gay, or at least not that we know of, because it is seen in my culture and religion as shameful and immoral.
Throughout the bible many stories and moral lessons focus on denying oneself in order to live a life that pleases God. The greatest example of this christian ideology is in Jesus Christ himself since the christian Church believes that Jesus is the second separate but equal portion of God and he had left his kingdom in order to cleanse the human population from their sinfulness. Christ himself had even taught that to follow him would be a denial on oneself and would require a person to carry their “cross” daily which would be a metaphor to the crucifixion of Christ since his self sacrifice was his burden and his physical display of self rejection and the embracement of God's will. This ideology has only caused strife for LGBT christians since they are called to deny themselves in order to please God but has left them again feeling that they are somehow unworthy for God and are forced to live in celibacy while their heterosexual brothers and sisters do not obtain the same
In today’s society, a person is able to identify themselves as a boy, a girl or a transgender. Transgender is a delicate subject to some people as it may be accepted by some and abnormal for others. Lisa Fields, a journalist, informed us that nearly 700,000 people are living publicly as transgender in the U.S and many people have many assumptions about what it means to be transgender. The people who identify themselves as transgender say it what is means inside to them is what matters. Additionally, different ways of marriage are introduced into today’s world more than just a man and a wife married together. Gay, lesbian and traditional relationships are all around today having the same issues as the transgender subject. The issue that
In the commercial, it shows a variety of people such as transgenders, poor people, different races, queer, and more. None of these people knew the other, but they cooperated until the end because they saw each other through binary views (meaning you have only one choice or another) of one’s sex, gender, and sexuality. For example, the man and transgender interaction. The man saw the transgender as a woman and gained respect because she was ex-military; however, his face completely changed once he found out the woman was actually transgender. Transgender is “a contested umbrella term used to describe individuals whose gender expression and behavior do not match the binary system.” Despite him finding out, he made the effort to understand why
The topic of homosexuality has been a very hot topic over the past several decades. The term homosexuality can be defined as the “sexual desire or behavior towards a person or persons of one’s own sex” (“Homosexuality”). There are many people who either agree or disagree with the aspect of homosexuality, and there are others who are indifferent. Many Christian churches around the world, especially in the United States, have stated their opinion against homosexuality. They based their beliefs in the verses in 1st Corinthians 6: 9-10, which says, “Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: neither the sexually immoral, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor
Transgendered often has feelings as though they are living inside a body that is wrong. They also appeared to be confused not knowing what to do, or who to talk to about their confusion. This theory will be a perfect opportunity for me to ask the client “what are your feelings about your sexuality”. At this point it will allow him to opened up and discuss his concerns for his feelings. I will then have him to give me a background of his family history and his childhood life. After he has opened up and I have given him my undivided attention, then I will acknowledge that we are all different in our own way, that is what makes us so
In the article, The Real Christian Debate on Transgender Identity, author Emma Green tackles the topic of controversy between the various interpretations of Christianity about the idea of the transgender identity. The article is controversial as it displays two contrasting perceptions of the biblical appliance in acknowledging the transgender identity. Green provides an array of examples of both sides of the debate, those Christians that perceive that the Bible claims that transgender identity seizes to exist and those who advocate for the existence of transgendered individuals. The article begins by addressing the recent transition and exposure of Caitlyn
It has always been widely discussed in the media about the way certain issues currently present in our culture should be approached by the church. One of the most delicate questions is how to deal with the awareness of the church and its followers of the complex biological and psychological nature of human sexuality. It is stated in The Book of Discipline of the United Methodist Church, 2012 that “God’s grace is available to all, that nothing can separate us from the love of God.” Besides, Methodists claim to be “in respectful dialogue with those with whom we disagree, to explore the sources of our differences, to honor the sacred worth of all persons.” Despite such tolerant, promising doctrines, a huge amount of the discussions on the topic of LGBT come down to accusations and black-and-white judgments having nothing to do with Christian dialogue.
Society advances and adjusts on a daily basis. As people broaden their social imagination, they are able to open themselves up to new ways of society. However, there also lies the possibility that someone may be exposed to something which can result in a negative outlook on that subject of matter. Although it is ideal for the response to such a change in the way we observe social facts, being exposed to change is important in that everyone is left with a broadened perspective. It is hard to prove whether the population of transgenders in history has increased over time since the term is so contemporary, but it is fair to say that once the term “transgender” was coined in the 1960’s some have had a hard time accepting the idea. The fact that Transgender individuals exist indicates that they are a social construction; However, this concept is often taken for granted.
Transgender, a term I was not too familiar with until I read the insightful book Luna by Julie Anne Peters. Before reading this novel I thought that if you were transgender that meant you wanted to change your sex, because you thought you were born as the wrong one; however, there is more to it than this. A person that is transgender goes through cycles of transformation in order to get to the point where they finally look the same outside as they do on the inside.
The intersectionality of Christianity and sexual minority identity growing up was something that I was sheltered from because my parents are against anyone who is LGBTQ. I grew up in a Greek Orthodox family and there were many talks about individual’s sexual identities and many of these discussions were negative. As a child, I did not understand what a sexual identity was until I became friends with my first gay friend. The thing that confused me was how people of God can dislike a child of God just because they choose to have homosexual relationships. These individuals are human beings and should not be treated as others. In my eyes treating them as is wrong. I myself identify as a heterosexual female and therefore are a part of the majority and the ideal Christian when it comes to sexual relationships. But, I am a Christian that ones sexual identity should be who they are that they should not hide it because it is already hard enough finding love in this world. Finding love and being a Christian as a LGBTQ member is even more difficult. Growing up in a very conservative household came with its own ideas of what sexual identity. Greek orthodoxy does not believe in homosexual is right in the eyes of the Lord. Their reasoning for this is when the bible states that a woman was made for man. My father, when I would argue with him about sexual identity would always bring this argument up. Yes, I understand where he and the church is coming from, but I do not understand how God
