All businesses strive to be effective and efficient. Whilst the hallmark of a capitalist economy is self-interest and competition, cooperation is also necessary in order to further efficiency and productivity. For a business to be successful, the people within need to develop relationships amongst each other as well as outside the organization in order to be able to work with one another. These relationships are a function of trust. Trust is the reliance on the integrity, ability, or character of a person or thing. Therefore building trust is a vital step towards maintaining and promoting business efficiency. However, in terms of business ethics, the sole purpose of the use of trust is to promote business efficiency.

There is no code that states that employers must disclose the working conditions of the workplace, but failure to inform an employee about hazardous working environments is to deny him information that may affect his decision to stay on the job. This is unethical, and even in a capitalist economy where self interest and profitability is important, this is not the most efficient way for a business to be run. This creates a lack of trust in the workplace between employees and employers and such an environment is bound to lower productivity in the long run which in turn lowers business efficiency. Conversely, it can be assumed that establishing an environment for trust within the workplace, so that the relationship between employers and employees is strong and that employees are more aware of their environment means that workers will be more comfortable in their workplace. This will have a positive effect and result in greater productivity and efficiency.

The employer, Tosi Industries, is not diligent in promoting a safe work environment. An example is shown by the pay-for-performance structure, which encourages productivity over safety (Tucker, 2008). This has a negative effect on workplace safety as employees are rewarded with team bonuses for high production levels, regardless of the safety costs. One of the example the author gives is about security issues at the airport after the 9/11 attack. He says before security had been tightened he would arrive at the airport 20 minutes before departure and still made it on the plane.

In order for interpersonal trustworthiness to exist in organizations, a leader-follower relationship must first exist between the parties involved (Caldwell et al., 2010, p. 500). Once that leader-follower relationship is established, leaders have to earn trust. Leaders earn trust by their respective actions, morals and virtues. Trust is can also be based on past history. If something was done in the past which questions a leader’s values, morals or judgment, it would be unlikely that the leader would be trusted in the future. One of the most important parts of being an effective leader is building and maintaining trust. Trust can further be defined as a “multi-dimensional construct comprising different dimensions of the trustee’s attributes that the trustor evaluates” (Ingenhoff and Sommer, 2010, p. 341).
Work takes on greater importance in a society where people believe that they can master the material world and shape their own destinies, and less where they believe that they can not. An Ancient Greek philosopher said that the only stability in the world was within one's mind or soul, where ideas were secure from the unending changes that took place in the material world. In Ancient Greece, philosophers believed that a person's thoughts and ideas were more important than that person's work and that work in the material world lacked permanence. For the ancient Greeks, the status of particular occupations depended on the degree of freedom a person had, the perceived moral integrity of the occupation, and the amount of mental and physical work it required. Today we tend to feel that working in an office is better than working in a coal mine, regardless of which worker makes more money. Our language suggests that it is a privilege to work sitting down.
There should be trust amongst each other in order to be able to work together successfully.
