I have always dreamed about working in a bookstore. I have been an avid reader since a very early age and I have devoted much of my academic career to analyzing texts. As a rising Junior at Tufts University, I am working toward a major in Political Science and a minor in English Literature. Outside of the classroom, I work as an editor at large for Tufts Zamboni, as a board member of the Cannon literary journal, and, just this semester, I co-founded an arts and literature magazine by the name of Tufts Portfolio. Since 2014, I have worked in some way in the service industry, accommodating customers and meticulously executing tasks even as mundane as scanning in boxes. Some call it OCD, others call it good work ethic. I believe that I am a
I started working at Camelot’s Books two years ago. It’s the only job I’ve ever enjoyed. I don’t make a lot of money, but I never have to pay for books. If anything interesting ever happens to me, I am going to write a book myself. I tell this to Thomas, but he only laughs.
In his piece entitled “ Disliking books” Gerald Graff, a professor of English and education at the University of Illinois at Chicago, tells his story of how with some helpful insights he shifted from disliking literature to enjoying reading and analyzing the texts. The author shares that during his early school years he developed an aversion to literature as well as most liberal arts disciplines for not being able to find their application in his daily life. Coming from a middle class family, it was expected that young Graff would go to college. Since no particular discipline really interested him and his family did not own a business to set him up on a successful business path, he decided to major
I interned at a small independent publishing company, called Cinco Puntos Press. The main reason why I traveled that far was because they are one of the few publishing companies to publish diverse books by diverse authors and/or about diverse characters of distinct ethnicities/race, LGBT+ identities, people with disabilities, women, amongst other identities. Growing up, as the avid reader I’ve always been, it was difficult for me to find books that I could relate to—representation is still an
I never really thought about college until high school. Family and teachers talked to me about what I wanted to do in life and how college could help me pursue it. Before starting my college portfolio my classmates and I were requested a website called scois.org by Spartanburg High School’s career specialist, Addie Jones. Scois(South Carolina Career Information System) is a career website, to help you plan your career, learn about a career, and provide you with schools and information along with your desired career.Scois has helped me compare college where I plan to attend, which are: The Arts Institute of Charleston, Claflin University, SCAD, and University of North Carolina Greensboro. The website lets me compare the schools, wether it’s
When reflecting back over this activity, I have learned an enormous amount of information on what is going to be expected of me at the very end of the T2T program. I am not going to lie when reading about the Kansas Performance Teaching Portfolio information and how everything was broke down. I became overwhelmed, stressed, and worried that my lessons and activities may not meet their expectations. I know they are good; I just worry about other people’s opinions when it comes to reflecting on important factors in my life. Though as an educator I need to look at the feedback and really consider what they are saying to help better myself as an educator. With the KPTP form it will allow me to see each assignment broken down into the different sections of that specific assignment or even unit. I feel this will help me better see what sections are really successful and which ones need revamped. The KPTP will allow us to better ourselves to become the best possible teacher because not teacher wants to fail at their job.
There are an enormous amount of people in the United States that depend on the librarian to do different tasks that they cannot do. Patrons may think it is simple, but before you can become a librarian you have to learn how to conquer some patrons that come in, you have to learn how to work the desk and learn how to work the shelves.
There are number of projects that I could include in my professional portfolio, but I have narrowed it down to three artifacts that I think would stand out. The first artifact that I choose is DD report, which I conducted in intro to motor behaviors class, the second piece is a fact sheet epidemiology and the third piece is a virtual child project from developmental psychology. The reason why I am choosing each of these is because they all are from different departments and areas of study. One project is from my major class, one is from my minor and the last one is from an elective class.
Unquestionably, Joyce Lain Kennedy is a subject matter expert in the resume writing industry. Throughout her book titled “Resumes for Dummies”, she repeatedly demonstrated comprehensive industry-knowledge with respect to resume writing. Additionally, she addressed many contemporary issues faced by both job seekers and resume writers alike. These matters are dramatically disrupting the environment of the profession. Nonetheless, there were two distinctive similarities found in her book that unequivocally comply with the guidelines of the National Resume Writers’ Association (N.R.W.A).
High Schools throughout the country have different graduation requirements for their seniors. At Preston High School, a senior portfolio is a requirement to graduate. For the portfolio, students must collect all of their accomplishments and report cards to place into a binder. The binder will then be presented to employees of businesses. Another example of a graduation requirement would be community service. For example, Maryland schools require 75 hours of student service. Based upon research, some experts say that community service should be voluntary; however, it gets students involved in the community, allows for better schooling, and gives students a better work experience.
When I arrived at the library, on a typically average monday evening, I was not particularly sure on the work I was getting myself into. But, when I found out I was cleaning the computer lab for an hour and hunting for missing books, my worry fled. I had plenty of experience cleaning, and knew that book hunting would be simple, it was a weekly task on my visits there to check out my own books. When I arrived at the
After high school I struggled through numerous retail jobs. As fate would have it however, my wife would introduce me to someone who worked with the Chicago Public Library. I was able to land a job as a CyberNavigator, assisting patrons with technological issues and promoting digital literacy. During my time as a CyberNavigator, I worked in numerous underprivileged communities where I spent most of my time helping patrons find jobs online or applying for financial assistance through the government websites. Connecting with numerous organizations in the community, I established my library as a center in the community where patrons could actively come to find assistance on a number of digital literacy issues. I finally felt a sense of pride in my work and it prepared me for my future endeavors in civic engagement.
This practice-based assessment activity conducted as part of Mentorship portfolio was a positive experience. Speaking with the supervisor beforehand, as part of the initial interview, ease my anxiety and helped me organize and co-ordinate this learning activity. Despite the positive feedback received from the supervisor and learner there are few key points I would like to take forward on my next assessments.
I selected my “Grade 10 Science Award” in my portfolio because it shows the achievement I have done in this science class and my hard work on it. It shows others that I am capable of what I do with my studies and get rewarded with awards which shows I exceeded my teacher expectation with a high degree of efficiency. I had mange to do my best and it shows a positive attitude in my portfolio.
Over the time of this course writing portfolio essays has really helped me. My favorite highlights of my essays include: Character Education, The Power of Technology, and Statistics in the Classroom. Character education defines how a child should act morally and is one of the most important lessons to learn in a classroom. Parents have to teach right from wrong, but teachers spend large amounts of time with their students and need to enforce what parents have taught to their children. The power of technology highlights the expanding use of devices rather than usage of textbooks and pencils. I learned that language development is crucial at a young age and I think the introduction of words can be done respectively through technology.
This reflection will be an attempt to describe and consider more consciously the topic that I chose to investigate. I will explain in details the information that I have gathered in the portfolio. I chose to look at gender and why women are still held back in society. Gender inequality is defined as unequal treatment of individuals based on their gender. I will briefly discuss issues of unequal pay and sexual violence against women in the UK. Time immemorial it has been women that have been on the receiving end of this imbalanced economy, political and social system. I am therefore going to look into the causes and how these imbalances have affected the woman folk. This is despite being a greater majority of the world population.
