After reading The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin, Turtle is a dynamic character. At the beginning of the book, the character is neglected; eventually, the character becomes genuine and Kind Hearted. These character traits were observed through Turtle's actions, dialogue, relationships, choices, and problems. Turtle towards the middle and the end of the book is nice. This connects to my life because Turtle is very nice like my two little sisters.
Turtle is neglected at the beginning of the book through her relationships, choices and this tells me that turtle is an independent child. Turtle Wexler does not have a good relationship with her mother Grace because Grace pays much more attention to Turtle’s sister Angela. Grace does not love Turtle as much as Angela so she favors Angela over Turtle. In the book when the Wexlers moved into their new apartment in Sunset Towers, Grace said that she wanted Turtle to live in the closet. When Turtle was hit by fireworks Grace did nothing but, when Angela was in a bomb explosion Grace took Angela straight to the hospital to get plastic surgery. Furthermore, that is why I assume Turtle is neglected in the beginning of the book.

Without a doubt, Grace favors Angela over Turtle but Turtle still sticks up for Angela no matter what. In addition, Turtle chose to stay at the bedside of Julian R. Eastman. Turtle said to Sandy you can die before my eyes and I would not believe it. In the text, it states, “You can die before my very eyes Sandy, and I wouldn’t believe it.” In conclusion that is why I assume Turtle is genuine in the middle of the
In the short story “the White Heron” (1886), Sarah Jewett portrays a young little girl, Sylvia, bear the temptation of money and affection from the young man with mental struggle, and resolutely determined to protect the fairy of nature – a white heron. Through describing Sylvia’s authentic emotions and using of vivid theme colors and exquisite word choice, Jewett delivers the story like showing a lifelike 19-century country-life drama in front of the readers.
In the book, The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin, the conclusion is what summarized the plot of the book. Knowing this, one might agree the way the ending was written was very effective. The owner of the Westing Paper Products Company, Sam Westing, was murdered. Sixteen people are called to Sunset Towers to participate in the reading of the will. Little did they know that the will was only going to unleash the monster in them all. The will of Sam Westing went on to say that one of the sixteen people in the room was a murderer, the same murderer that ended his life. Everyone would be paired into teams. Clues were spread out among the pairs-of-two and the game began. 200 million dollars was offered to the person who uncovered the secrets to
Now, as most may know sea turtles are both marine and land animals depending on what stage of life they are in. Which means that they need to be able to go on land during certain stages of their lives. One of the main reasons why a sea turtle will go on to land is to lay their eggs. Within the last few years this has become harder and harder for the already endangered species. It
Someone once said, “You can’t change people, either accept who they are or start living life without them.” This relates to the Westing Game by Ellen Raskin, because in the book, one of the main characters, Turtle, changed throughout the story. At the beginning of the story, she was rude, but at the end she was kind and trustworthy and this showed through her choices, actions, and dialogue. What I have learned is that change is possible if you try.
From the words of C.S. Lewis, “Hardships often prepare ordinary people for an extraordinary destiny”. Facing hardships and breaking free from their normal world allows the hero inside of people to come out. Many stories document this journey of a hero through the Hero’s Journey Archetype. In the short story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell, a man named Rainsford stumbles upon an island where humans are hunted by a crazed man. The hero’s journey archetype is implemented throughout Rainsford’s experiences in the story. Richard Connell used the Hero’s Journey Archetype to structure the plot and develop the theme that with clever thinking and lots of hope, one can succeed at anything.
Taylor receives no explanation from the woman who leaves Turtle with her, yet Taylor still takes on huge responsibility of caring for the child. Then, Taylor starts to notice a lot of things that makes her wandering what happened with the little girl. Taylor starts noticing Turtle’s smile while she was bathing her, and she also discovers that Turtle has been sexually molested and abused. By discovering these details of Turtle’s life, Tylor want to know more about Turtle’s life. She start working, but Tylor keeps thinking about Turtle. For example, in page (69) Tylor starts the work at Burger Derby, but after 6 days she quiet. She kept thinking about Tylor and who will take care of her while she is in work. That shows how Tylor start acting like mother when she left her job and tried to find a good place for her and

In the essay “The Believing Game” by Peter Elbow, he discusses the concepts of taking the emotion out of arguments and using logic by seeing another person’s opinion or ideology through their eyes. Elbow uses “The Doubting Game” as his counter-argument in the essay and speaks of how most humans are naturally conditioned to over-analyze any argument that is presented before them. Elbow, while making some insightful points to the way humans think, presents his essay with too much emotion and bias. Morality is not considered in his essay and Elbow is not presenting the realistic way most people think or argue.
Imagine you, a well known hunter, are stranded on a humid, tropical island with no wildlife other than a psychotic man. This psychopath is a fellow hunter, but desires to poach even greater and smarter game with extremely high intelligence, and is the smartest animal of all -- humans. Throughout the story, the author creates a suspenseful mood through several conflicts the main character encounters, while struggling to survive the “most dangerous game.” In Richard Connell’s short adventure story, “The Most Dangerous Game,” Rainsford, a hunter, travels to South America on a hunting expedition, when he carelessly falls off his yacht and into the Caribbean Sea. Struggling to find a place to rest, he swims to an island off in the distance. Upon reaching the island, he comes across a large building where he is warmly welcomed by the owner of the establishment, also a renowned hunter, named General Zaroff, only to find that he is a lunatic. After learning of General Zaroff’s sins, Rainsford is challenged by the general in a game of life and death, and their specialty, hunting. From beginning to end, the author of this short survival story creates a suspenseful mood through the three main conflicts the main character encounters.
Taylor expresses some worries to the doctor about being “concerned about some stuff that happened to her a while ago…” (128). Turtle has a had a traumatic life she met Taylor. She is worried and curious about what happened to Turtle “a while ago”. Kingsolver evidently stated “a while ago” to reference how it much Turtle has changed over the past time spent with Taylor. She is interested in learning more about Turtle and her struggles that are clear through her physical behaviors. Taylor notices how Turtle grabs on to things and feels like she needs to attach herself to things to stay safe. This is all an effect of her past abuse or mistreatment. Taylor also wants to know how this could potentially shape Turtle for the future. Taylor clearly states that she is “concerned” about Turtle because she is beginning to connect with her. Because Taylor is concerned about Turtles well being, she is curious about what may have happened to Turtle causing her to be affected emotionally and physically. As Taylor and Turtle become closer Taylor, being a good mom, begins to become curious about Turtle, her past life and how this could affect her
When one is hunting, do they ever stop to think about how it feels to be the prey? In Richard Connell’s short story, “The Most Dangerous Game”, the character Rainsford has a change of opinion and feelings to this very question. In the beginning of the story, Rainsford is on a ship with a colleague and expresses that he is only concerned about the feelings of himself as the hunter and not those of the “huntee”. Not long after falling off the ship and arriving to a nearby island is it that Rainsford experiences what it is like to be the huntee. Connell uses many transitions within in the story that leads the reader in suspense and encourages them to keep reading. The transitions are first when Rainsford falls off the ship and approaches the island, when allows him to come into his house and stay, and when the hunt results in the two going against each other.
In the short story “The Key Game” the author appeals to the readers’ sense of emotion (pathos) because of the in-depth description of the Jewish family’s unfortunate living arrangements, and because of the method the author uses to explain the various character descriptions, emotions, and dialog throughout the story. This story takes place at some point during the Second World War. The author, Ida Fink, introduces the reader to a small Jewish family consisting of a wife, husband, and their three year old son. They live in a small apartment which she describes as poor, urban, and gloomy. The situation with the war can be shown with the frequent changes in apartments. The purpose of the story is in a “game” made by the parents to prepare the child for his reaction in case the Germans ever come knocking at the door. The author introduces the emotion in this story from the very beginning, when she starts to describe where the story takes place.
In the short story, The Most Dangerous Game, written by Richard Connell, the saying, “what goes around comes around”, is a prominent theme. This phrase means that how one treats others directly influences how they are treated. The Most Dangerous Game tells the story of a cruel man Zaroff and his ways of hunting humans. While on this island, Zaroff meets Rainsford, a fellow hunter who is both lured and potential prey to Zaroff. This motif is exemplified in the downfall of Zaroff, the success of Rainsford, and when Rainsford transitions from being the hunter to being hunted.
Richard Edward Connell was an American author, who was probably most famous for the short story “The Most Dangerous Game.” Connell started writing at the age of 10 covering baseball games for his father 's paper. By the age of sixteen he had become the editor of the Poughkeepsie News-Press. Connell was a very smart man who studied at Georgetown and Harvard. While at Harvard he was the editorial chairman. Connell 's writing style was usually action-adventure. Some of his works were probably inspired from his time working as a homicide journalist, and serving in World War I. By the time Connell passed away he had published over 300 short stories. Richard Connell was a very unique author from experiences he had through out his life, and so was the writing style that he portrayed.
