World War I was supposedly the war to end all wars because of the size of it. There were two groups which fought, the Central Powers and Allied Powers. Germany, Bulgaria, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire were a part of the Central Powers. France, Russia, Italy, Russia, Romania, Japan, Great Britain, and the United States were in the Allied Powers. (World War I History, 2009) World War I started in 1914 because of the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand. (World War I History, 2009) Though it is said that was the reason for the war, two theories describe why the great war broke out. The two theories that best describe why World War I broke out are Marxism and realism. Out of those two, realism best explains why it happened. The reason why it was so large was because treaties played such a vital role on why so many countries were involved. The nations who were not a part of the original problem with the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand were fighting because of treaties. The reason for all the treaties are because of the theory of realism. All the countries needed the help, so that they would not get absolutely ran over by the other country in the war. Even though the countries were helping each other in fighting, they were at the same time trying to save themselves from the opposition; they needed help in order to survive.
