Unanswered Love

Paul Newman once said, “People stay married because they want to, not because the doors are locked” (74). There is no such thing as the perfect relationship, however, being involved in a healthy relationship is essential for a person to feel valued, safe, and happy. Unfortunately, in the situation of Kelly Sundberg’s personal essay “It Will Look Like a Sunset,” and Kate Chopin’s short story “The Story of An Hour,” include extreme examples of unhealthy relationships. The essay “It Will Look Like a Sunset,” shares painful experiences of Sundberg’s physical and emotional abusive relationship with her husband Caleb, while “The Story of an Hour,” shares a rare reaction of a married woman, Louise Mallard, who explores her emotions cautiously when hearing about the death of her husband. Each woman faces their own prison created by their husbands. The two marriages represent the figurative meaning of doors being locked in a marriage. Both pieces of literature convey the theme of confinement by using the literary devices of foreshadowing, imagery, and conflict.

Whether a story is written short or long, in a novel, or in a movie, it always has a main theme that attracts the reader. The theme helps connect all the plots together to come to a final resolution. Being lonely, isolated and unwanted are the feelings that most affect people. Loneliness is about feeling disconnected from the rest of the world. Being isolated have a negative impact on society, but it will also have a negative impact on the person being isolated. The two short stories, “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and “Ms. Brill” by Katherine Mansfield focuses on the way two women experience loneliness, isolation, and social expectation in their society. Social expectations may hold back women from achieving their fullest potential because they are obligated to stand by a series of rules that may be counter-productive to them. Throughout these two stories, the readers are able to see a lot of similarities between the stories just that they are presented in different ways.

In “The Chrysanthemums” by John Steinbeck it surrounds a woman named Elisa. Elisa’s marriage dynamic proves to be complicated as the banter between her and her husband Henry demonstrates the inability to communicate. Isolation leaves Elisa not satisfied in her life and marriage. Therefore, the loneliness Elisa looks for comfort when a tinker shows up looking for work and cons her. The tinker appealed to Elisa making her feel less alone than she usually does and even shows interest in her beloved flowers. By the tinker using Elisa’s interests, her loneliness subsides as she then craves the attention he gives. In “The Chrysanthemum” Steinbeck shows a theme of isolation throughout the story as Elisa is isolated from society, isolated from her own feelings, and even in her marriage.

Steinbeck wrote about many different characters who are full of dreams which sadly none of their dreams came true. Everyone has a big dream that would like to accomplish one day but sometimes , when we get lonely our dreams don’t come true. Through these characters John Steinbeck shows the effects about true loneliness.

“But, I 'm already resigned to this fate / Looking over my life, I recall / If it hadn 't been / for the loneliness / I 'd have no companion at all. ” This stanza from “Loneliness”, by Lora Colon evokes the negative impact a lonely fate has on a person. Words like “resigned” and “loneliness” establish a sense of depression and resignation. During the times of the Great Depression, many people felt similar feelings of melancholy and stoicism. Jobs were hard to come by, and realistic dreams of success were scarce. John Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice and Men, allows readers to see the life of the Great Depression. The two main characters, George and Lennie, search for jobs, like many other migrant workers. They dream of owning their own land, however, Lennie’s habit of getting in trouble prevents their dream from being reality. After he accidentally causes more trouble at their new job, George is forced to kill him out of mercy. Throughout the novel, Steinbeck shows that even if one meticulously plans out the road to their American Dream, fate will inevitably intervene and lead one to desolation and loneliness.

Would you like to know where and how loneliness can occur through characters in novels and in reality? Well, in the book Of Mice and Men, by Jerry Steinback a commonly occurring central problem is based off of many forms of loneliness occurring through many, if not every character besides sub characters where we do not get a deep enough of an insight to create ideas or inferences about them. Of Mice and Men, is a story mainly focused on two characters, one named Lennie who’s mentally ill and who’s incapable of anything except the needs of physical strength. And another named George, who is smart but caught in the guilt of Lennie’s needs. Meaning, he was and got stuck with Lennie because Lennie ‘s guardian who was George’s friend died so Lennie had no one except his friend George. They together travel as poor migrant workers, and what makes things worse is that Lennie doesn’t know how to stay out of trouble. George works hard in trying to keep a steady life with Lennie, but it’s literally impossible with a man like Lennie. George can’t always be with Lennie to keep him from doing things he isn’t supposed to do. Eventually they get going on a new ranch after an incident with Lennie, and Lennie 's troubles bring him to killing the Master’s son’s wife of their new ranch, where George is later forced to kill Lennie. Steinbeck and Fitzgerald show us two sides of loneliness. In the Great Gatsby, the characters have so much, yet truly have so little. While Daisy’s material possessions were vast, she had no real relationships with those around her. In Of Mice and Men the

            In the story Cannery Row Loneliness is a main theme to the characters lives.  One of these themes is Loneliness.  'He was a dark and lonesome looking man' No one loved him.  No one cared about him'(Page 6).  The severity of his solitude makes this theme one of the most important.  The seclusion of this man can penetrate ones innermost thoughts and leave them with a sense of belonging after hearing of this

Loneliness and aloneness are two very different feelings; loneliness could be a lack, a feeling that something is missing, or a pain. But aloneness is being completely alone, a being without friends or people. The Great Gatsby by Scott F. Fitzgerald, Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller, and Cannery Row by John Steinbeck all connect to aloneness vs. loneliness. In The Great Gatsby, Jay Gatsby himself feels loneliness although Nick Carraway feels all alone; in Cannery Row, Doc feels loneliness, while the Chinaman prefers to be alone; In Death of a Salesman, Willy Loman feels lonely trying to support his family but his sons seem never to appreciate his hard work.

Loneliness is a central theme governing the interactions of the characters pertaining to the novel, Giovanni’s Room. David’s words are a source of wisdom for why loneliness so frequently follows the actualization of love. He says, “With this fearful intimation there opened in me a hatred for Giovanni which was as powerful as my love and which was nourished by the same roots” (p 84). Baldwin perhaps is trying to hint at the thin line separating what we perceive as love from that which we perceive as hate. Similarly, we can identify these components within the pages of Baldwin’s novel.

Star of the Sea, written by Joseph O’Connor, tells the tale of several passengers aboard the ship, Star of the Sea. The narrative occurs during one of the most terrible events in human existence: The Potato Famine. Land and the power it brings is at the heart of the novel. “…they [The Irish] have two score and upward of words for land, depending on what sort of land is being spoken of” (O’Connor 79). In the novel, the state of the relationship between a man and his wife is indicative of their situation in regards to possession of land, wealth, and prosperity.

At some point in one’s life there is not only contentment or grief, but a state of loneliness. Loneliness is a part of human life, although some suffer from isolation more than others. Being lonely can lead to depression or create a different persona in oneself. Struggling through isolation can eventually kill one’s soul, expecting no hope or ending up in dangerous situations. The novella Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck portrays the theme of loneliness especially through two characters. Crooks and Curley’s wife experience the state of isolation as they crave for a friend or someone they can talk with. Steinbeck urges readers to feel pathos when analyzing Crooks and Curley’s wife through the nature of their isolation, their actions and

Carson McCullers’ usage of literary elements, including setting, character, and conflict, contributes to the overall development of the theme of patience that is present throughout the book. Martin Meadows, the protagonist in the story, is portrayed as a hardworking and persevering man with a great amount of love for his family; the story recounts a day when Martin arrives home from work to a mentally absent wife who is supposed to be taking care of the children. McCullers’ grants Martin Meadows the gift of patience in order to cope with the conflict and his drunk wife. Without the usage of these details and elements, the ideas presented in the story would not have been as powerful. “A Domestic Dilemma” is a story that is remembered and the purpose is made clear through McCullers’ usage of setting, description of character and development of conflict.

Love is the greatest gift God could give to mankind. Its’ sole intention is to bring people together to a time called forever. However, love is the reason behind Daisy Buchanan and Clarissa Dalloway’s unhappiness in life. In F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan is married to a man named Tom, but her heart belongs to a man named Gatsby. Similarly, in Virginia Woolf’s Mrs. Dalloway, Clarissa Dalloway is in love with a man named Peter, however is married to a man named Richard. Both women give up their true love in order to marry a wealthy man, and subsequently live a life full of doubt.

There is nothing more innocent than love from a child. Children come into this world with no expectations other than to be loved. No, they do not understand the meaning of love, but they feel it every time a gentle hand holds or caresses their tender flesh. In the poem “Those Winter Sundays,” by Robert Hayden, the boy speaks of how his father shows his love by the physical things he does for his family. The dedication and commitment of hard work through the week the boy’s father does to provide for them is unrecognized by outsiders. “with cracked hands that ached from labor in the weekday weather made banked fires blaze.” (3-5).
