When in a managerial role it is necessary to make yourself available to staff and Service Users in order to build relationships and maintain an open line of communication.
The use of handover sheets, daily diaries, care plans, supervisions and appraisals are all forms of communication used within the Day Care setting.
The use of an electronic diary system is also invaluable as a quick and efficient way of sharing information with colleagues This enables one to one interviews, meetings, reviews and supervisions to be pre-booked and others to have access to this information. This communication system is used very effectively within our management team; all members have an electronic diary in place via a central server and share information with others allowing the smooth running of diary entries.
One of the most important and valuable forms of effective communication is an ‘open door policy’, ensuring that staff, relatives/carers and Service Users are aware that you are available to discuss matters at their convenience. This form of communication instils confidence in the day care setting ensuring that everyone feels ‘listened to’ and that communication is paramount in the day to day running of the centre.

Methods of Effective Communication . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
All members of the staff must act as professionals while at work, especially with young children. The administrative and teaching staff must work together to ensure their practices are developmentally appropriate, and share new and/or creative ideas with one another. It is also the responsibility of a teacher to establish an open, trusting relationship with the parents of each children in their care. Thus, parents can freely communicate their thoughts, concerns, and/or suggestions about their child or the program. Parent satisfaction is something that every child care or development center should strive for.
2.2 In a small practice with part-time team members there is a high possibility of communication failure for example; messages not being passed on at all or incorrectly, decisions made earlier in the week without involvement or reference to all colleagues. This may result in mixed perceptions or feelings of marginalisation. To overcome this barrier, staff meetings are to be held on dates where all staff can attend. If this is not possible the minutes of the meeting should be written out and forwarded on to the appropriate people. It is also important to seek feedback regularly to check the message has been conveyed in a clear and concise way. Forums and emails are an efficient mechanism for short, chatty updates. It is also a good method of quickly communicating messages to several people and allowing further discussion with feedback and input.
Effective communication may have a positive impact on individuals lives as it will give them confidence. The more confidence they gain the more willing they will be to try new things. They will have more self-esteem and will be able to apply for work. Effective communication can give them a better social life, they will want to spend time with others and less likely to become withdrawn and depressed.

Information should be shared on a day to day basis between the practioner and the parent/ career abpout everything that happens in the nursery.
For the children’s learning to be successful, parent involvement is critical. An orientation will occur prior to the children attending. Parents will be updated with the day care policies, the lay out of the day care, the expectations and the introduction of their child care provider. This is done to allow both the parent and child care provider to get to know each other and allows them both the opportunity to discuss the care the child will need.
