By mid-June 1945 there was yet another meeting where 51 nations came together and signed the Charter of United Nations this document laid out the obligations and rights of each country to keep peace in the world (Basic Facts About the United Nations). Each of those nations is responsible for trying to ensure that the generations to come will not have to bear witness to the horror, pain, and destruction from war like the ones their generation had to witness not once but twice. These nations are to work together to maintain peace and security and to maintain friendly relations when solving international economic, humanitarian, social, and cultural issues. The home base for this operation is in New York City since 1942, and each year the 193 Member States meet. They call this the General Assembly where the head generals of the United Nations come together to go over budget, debate problems, and elect a new president of the UN that serves a sentence of one year. The United Nations is a vessel to keep the peace, they work to prevent conflicts, step in and help parties in conflict to make peace; peacekeeping; and creating the conditions to allow peace. The UN security council has the primary responsibility for the aforementioned. They are the division of the UN that is responsible for maintaining international peace and security. There are fifteen members and each member has one vote, and under the charter, all Member States are obligated to comply with the council’s decisions (The United Nations, n.d.). The United Nations along with the security council was formed in 1945, leaders of 50 nations met in San Francisco with representatives of non-government organizations. It took place at the end of the second world war to prevent that type of widespread destruction, they formed the United Nations.

For a mission to be peacekeeping, the UN needs to be invited by at least one side, and more commonly two. The forces on a peacekeeping mission are usually lightly armed in order to prevent them from acting aggressively, while also confirming its role as a peacekeeper that is neutral. The main role of the peacekeepers is to act as a buffer and report when a country violates a ceasefire. The peacekeeping force enters after the conflict has started and its mission is to fulfill the mandate provided by the council. Lately peacekeeping missions have focused more on aid and state building rather than just preventing conflict. Recently there have been calls for the UN to move from peacekeeping to peace enforcement in some situations. Peace enforcement usually requires a larger, better, and heavier equipped force that won’t just keep the peace, but enforce it if it has too. With peace enforcement, the UN would like to stop more conflicts before they start because the threat of a large UN force being called in might make some countries question going on the offensive in a war. For a peace enforcement mission to be successful, the orders and mandate given must be very clear to the troops so that they can respond in war in real time and not be held up in bureaucracy. Peace enforcement also doesn’t require the force to be impartial or to find the aggressor, but to work in the most efficient way possible to end the fighting.

Although these successes are beneficial to the world, the United Nations still are yet to actually stop a war. They will no doubt be working toward that until it happens. The United Nations maintain peace and security, protects Human Rights, their world food program provides many countries in need with food and strive to help end famine. The UNCRC gives children in Ireland all the necessities they need and helps give them a good and healthy life. The UNHCR helps refugees who were affected by international conflict by giving them a place to sleep, food and water to eat, and provide these things until they recover. Without the United Nations, many innocent people could be dead. The United Nations has prevented many conflicts from becoming more than they could have ended up being, which potentially saved lives. They have also provided food for many, many people since they have formed. There are now 216 million fewer people hungry than there were in 1992. That’s 216 million people that could have died, but thanks to the United Nations they are not dead. The world can hope for more beneficial changes to come through the United Nations. Recently in an interview, the United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley said that the United Nations was basically going to step up their game. She also said, “For those who don’t have our backs, we’re taking names.” If the United Nations becomes a better organization and gets rid of all the people weighing it down, it could become a much more useful organization. There are 193 member states of the United Nations today that all help to work towards the common goal of eliminating issues of humanity. Each year a general debate is held where questions on security, peace, admission of new members, etc. are discussed to come to a solution or agreement. More complex situations such as questions on, peace and security, admission of new members and budget specificities must be a two-thirds majority vote to pass, but simpler questions pass by simple majority. It can be agreed that, overall, the UN has largely been successful and effective in delivering its roles and responsibilities, with few failures in its operation.

The United Nations has several specific purposes that it tries to fulfill. First, its primary goal is to maintain international peace and security. According to the UN’s website, there are five main ways that it fulfills this purpose. First by preventing conflict before it even starts- specifically with diplomatic discussions and actions in a peaceful manner. For example, the UN currently is working as the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti to not only help with the rebuilding after the devastating earthquakes but also simply maintain peace in the country. In addition to working in preventative and peacekeeping ways, the United Nations also works towards peace with Peace Building activities, such as its work in Burundi until 2012.
