The labor union I decided to compare to the early guilds in Europe is United Mine Workers of America (UMWA). The similarities between the union and the guild are that they both provide financial security, and intends to protect the rights of the miners in which they represent. They also will protest unfair labor laws, being underpaid, and unfair treatment. These together will help their people through deaf or any other crisis that they are dealing with. In the middle ages heir guilds goals were to protect their members as well as the consumers. Even now f you have the ability to learn a skill or trait and are accepted into the union it allows you to rise out of poverty. These are just a few similar characteristics that modern labor unions
There is huge jump from these feudal societies to industrial societies. All of a sudden there are assembly lines, steam engines, cotton gins, textiles, and 100,000 work units compared to 100 work units. There were lots of jobs in factories, where people worked in unsafe conditions for little pay. Children could work and get paid a lot less than adults. The union was developed to try get employees the rights they deserved, stop child labor, and gain some security in their jobs. Working in factories on an assembly line began to make workers de-skilled and replaceable. Productivity flew through the roof though with all the new machines and growing technology.
Between 1865 to 1900, certain factors and movements came about that affected the American industrial worker. Technological changes impacted workers because different innovations and techniques helped make their work more efficient. Immigration increased employment in the urban population. Also, the labor unions came about because of poor living conditions, earnings, and long working hours.
Throughout coal country during the early 1900's you could find the fiery spirited Mother Jones; a union organizer for the United Mine Workers. Mother Jones fought tirelessly to bring together the ‘rank-and-file miners' in order to improve their working conditions, wages, and give them a voice in the workplace. What made Mother Jones the most feared woman in the 1900's was her power of conviction. Her speeches were extremely moving, which called men to action, and if her energy and passion were not enough she would embarrass them, calling their manliness into question. Mother Jones was so moving she was also able to call the mothers and children of the mineworkers to aid in their efforts. She was one of the most successful union organizers
Labor unions have existed in one way or another since the birth of our country in 1776. They were created in an effort to protect the working population from abuses such as sweatshops and unsafe working conditions. From the start of our Nation there were a few unions organized unions in a scattered fashion, but many were disbanded after they had achieved their goals, such as when the printers and shoemakers briefly unionized in Philadelphia and New York City in 1778 to conduct the first recorded strike for higher wages. Three years later in 1971 the first successful strike happened, when Philadelphia carpenters campaigned for a ten-hour workday. This caused the need for skilled and unskilled laborers to skyrocket during the Industrial Revolution and the Civil War and also got the ball rolling with Labor unions. At this point in our Country, there had been nothing done yet for workers’ rights, conditions, pay, and so on. People at this time saw that they could come together and do something to make their lives better for themselves and their families. Many of these dates were important in shaping our country’s labor policies into what they are today. In 1847 New Hampshire enacts as the first state to enforce a 10-hour workday law. In 1909 the International Ladies’ Garment workers’ Union calls a strike in New York, demanding a 20-percent raise and a 52-hour workweek. Within two days, more than 20,000 workers from 500 factories walk off the job. This largely successful uprising
Labor unions are a gathering of people for a united cause. People within a labor union fight for common goals such as better pay and fair working conditions. In most cases when a union attacks a certain aspect it is so they can all acquire the same out come, such as raising the minimum wage to twelve dollars an hour for all. The primary reason unions were created was because workers weren’t always treated appropriately throughout history. Industrial leaders would make maximum profit by making their employees work twelve to fifteen hour workdays for seven days a week and they would only earn pennies for each hour of work. The conditions in which employees conducted work was unsafe and unhealthy yet no one could complain because they could not afford to lose their job. This is when labor unions were introduced, at first they started off small only pertaining to a specific geological area in regards to a specific craft such as shoe making in Philadelphia. The smaller unions are known as locals, an employee affiliated with the union is then appointed as a liaison between their fellow workers and the corporation making them the shop steward. However, people realized they held power in numbers and ultimately national unions were established such as the, Knights of Labor.
The American Federation of Labor was an association of trade unions starting 1886, rising out of an earlier Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions founded in 1881. The AFL's president, Samuel Gompers, was convinced that unions open to workers of all types of skills within a given industry, called industrial unions, were too undisciplined to withstand the tactics that both government and management had used to break American unions in the past. The answer, was craft unions, each limited to the skilled workers in a single trade. According to Gompers's "pure and simple unionism," labor should not waste its energies fighting capitalism; I ts sole task was to hammer
Throughout American history, labor unions have served to facilitate mediation between workers and employers. Workers seek to negotiate with employers for more control over their labor and its fruits. “A labor union can best be defined as an organization that exists for the purpose of representing its members to their employers regarding wages and terms and conditions of employment” (Hunter). Labor unions’ principal objectives are to increase wages, shorten work days, achieve greater benefits, and improve working conditions. In the late medieval period, merchants and craftsmen united to form guilds. A guild is "a group of people with common interests and goals who unite for their mutual benefit". The UAW has received a great deal of criticism over the years for being responsible for the “death of the auto industry” in America. With its influential history and the issues members have faced over the course of the years, an analysis can be made of the way the group performs and the media attention that the group has generated. The UAW believes in social justice for its workers and providing quality automobile products to the public while creating success for its members, company investors and clients.
