For my favourite constellation, I have chosen that of Ursa Major, Latin for "The Great She-Bear". I have chosen this mostly for sentimental reasons in that the asterism known as The Big Dipper (also known as "The Plough") can be found in it, and this asterism has always been a comfort to me in when searching the night sky of the Northern Hemisphere no matter where in that Hemisphere I may be. It was the first constellation I learned to find in the night sky as a child, and it is still the first I seek at night in present times. Ursa Major, as well as being in the Northern Hemisphere, is bordered by such constellations as Draco ("The Dragon"), Camelopardalis ("The Giraffe"), The Lynx, Leo Minor ("The Little Lion"), Leo ("The Lion", a member …show more content…
The Romans had a myth that a nymph of the goddess Diana, named Callisto, was sought after by the king of the gods (the almighty Jupiter). This made Jupiter's wife, Juno, so jealous that she turned Callisto into a bear. This was the Roman myth surrounding Ursa Major, and that of Ursa Minor is connected in that Callisto encountered her son while in bear form, but he tried to kill her, so to protect them both, Jupiter turned them both into bears and they became Ursas Major and Minor, or The Bears Great and …show more content…
She would gather berries and plants from the forest to eat, and her hair was as long as time and as black as night. One day, her innocence was stolen from her by a huntsman, who attacked her, cut off her hair to sell, and left his children in her belly. She gave birth to twins, but one died, so she was fiercely protective over the other, despite the origins of his father. She knew she had to gain strength and cunning to protect herself and her child from the likes of the huntsman, so she began to eat meat, to build muscle and grew her hair again, thick enough to protect her body from harm, teaching her child to do the same. Little did she know that the huntsman had been a werebear, a shapeshifter. Every full moon, her son would transform from a boy into a bear and wreak havoc on the surrounding villages. The girl, now a woman, did all she could to heal the hurts inflicted by her son, giving aid to the wounded and herbs to the sick. But she knew it was not
I chose the constellation Andromeda because the back story and myths it has really fascinates me! I feel that some of the myths behind the consolations can be rather boring, but with the romance and danger all wrapped into one, I continue going back to it. This constellation is the 19th largest in the sky and is located in the first quadrant of the northern hemisphere. It takes seven-hundred-twenty-two square feet in the sky!
In today's society, constellations are known as a group of stars that when viewed from our planet earth, form a pattern that we can see at night with the unaided eye. There are also groups of constellation families; such as the Ursa major family, the Perusues Family, the Hercules Family, the Orion Family, the Bayer Group, the Heavenly Waters, the La Caille Family and finally the most known constellation group; the Zodiacal Family. The zodiacal family consists of the zodiac constellations signs. These signs usually describe your personality and who you are as a family. The constellation, Leo, is my zodiac sign, and in my particular interest for it depicts who I am. The Leo constellation is the twelfth largest constellation in the night sky and
The constellation I chose was Camelopardalis. This constellation represents my favorite animal, the Giraffe. Unsurprizingly, this constelation does resemble the Giraffe in appearance. The name this constellation bears comes from the Greek, and has three meanings: leopard, Giraffe, and camel. Camelopardalis can be seen best in the month of Febuary. However, it is not terriable visable. Overall, Camelopardalis is only a 4th magnatude consellation. There are eight other constellation in the vansinity of Camelopardalis.
Orion is my favorite constellation because it is one of the easiest to find and most recognizable. This makes it one of the most popular constellations. Orion's belt includes the three brightest stars in the sky. In the Northern Hemisphere, Orion is a fall and winter constellation, visible from November to February. One of Orion's "stars" is actually a nebula, the Orion nebula.
My favorite constellation by far is the Gemini constellation. The Gemini constellation is my favorite because my star sign is Gemini. And it is fairly easy to spot in the night sky, although the best viewing month is in February.
I choose to discuss the constellation Draco, or "The Dragon." I choose this constellation because a dragon is perhaps my most beloved and favorite creature of all time, magical or not. This constellation was also featured in my favorite movie of all time, "Dragonheart." Draco was just one of the constellations listed by Ptolemy, a 2nd century astronomer and it is circumpolar, or never setting. Draco consists of fourteen main stars, with its brightest star being y Dra. The constellations lies near Hercules and Ursa Major, in the North.
I have chosen the constellation Leo. I have chosen Leo because it is my horoscope sign. The real name of the constellation Leo is leonis which in translation means "the lion". Leo's right ascention is 11 hours, and its declination is 15 degrees. Leo is made up of 11 stars(regulus, denebola, algiebra, zosma, ras elased australius, adhafera, chort, al minliar asad, alterf, ras elesed borialas, subra). Leo is also one of the 13 constellations of the zodiac.
I have chosen the Perseus Constellation. I chose that contallation because I have always liked the Greek Gods mythology. Perseus, named after the Greek Mythology hero, is a constellation in the Northen Sky. Perseus is bordered by Aries and Taurus to the south, Auriga to the east, Camelopardalis and Cassiopeia to the north, and Andromeda and Triangulum the west.
My favorite constellation would have to be Orion. I chose this because I've always thought it would be cool to be shooting down starry prey while soaring among the stars. Orion is a hunter. He is forever in the stars hunting down meals and criminals. To me, Orion seemed like a tough guy. He's by himself in the stars, waiting for someone or something to come his way and end his seemingly endless lonely universe. That's why I chose Orion and a little information on this great hunter.
1. I've chosen the constellation "Draco." I chose this one because it was the constellation that my mother always talked about when I was little. She'd tell me stories about it's stars and she'd always let me stay up late to look at it. Draco is the 8th largest constellation and has 9 stars, the brightest of which is Gamma Draconis. It belongs to the Ursa Major family.
The constellation that I have chosen is Capricornus. Capricornus is one of the twelve zodiac constellations, and it symbolizes the sea-goat. The best time to see this constellation would be at ten o'clock at night in September and October, especially if you live in the Northern Hemisphere. I chose this constellation because according to Astrology I am a Capricorn and thought it would be interesting to know more about the constellation relating to my zodiac sign. Capricornus has five stars with planets in it's constellation.
As young children, the Big Dipper, also known as Ursa Major, is often one of the first constellations that we are taught to identify. Many of us know that 'ursa' means bear, and some can even give little story, usually based on the local culture, as to why it is in the sky. What we fail to realize is that many cultures around the world all have very different myths about how the Ursa Major came to be. Of all of the myths I read surrounding the Big Dipper, my two favorites come from the Algonquin Native Americans and the Ancient Greeks.
I chose the constellation, Orion. It is one of my favorites, because ever since I was little, I was able to find it, and it was cool to me. The constellation depicts a man, holding his shield in front of hi, and sword overhead. It signifies a hunter, attack his prey, especially since he follows other celestial animals, like Lepus, a rabbit, and Taurus, a bull.
Have you ever wondered how the Greek gods came into existence? It all started with Uranus and Gaia. These two had many children how where strong and powerful named the Titans. When the Titans had children they overthrew there older relatives. There are many different creation stories, with Greek mythology telling a tell of two powerful rulers, there children ruling the earth and monsters also created. And the down fall of it all to just one ruler.
Orion, also called The Hunter is my favorite constellation because it is perhaps the most prominent and well-known constellation, anywhere in the world, because its stars are so bright that it is possible to observe with the naked eye. Orion is located near the constellation Eridanus River and supported by his two hunting dogs Canis Major and Canis Minor fighting constellation Taurus.
