ASSINGMENT 1: MEDIA DEPENDANCY THEORY.
First developed by Sandra Ball-Rokeach and Melvin DeFleur in 1976, the media dependency theory is a theory of mass communication that assumes the more dependent an individual is on the media for having his or her needs met, the more important the media will be to that person and the more influence and power it will have over the individual.
Also known as Media System Dependency theory (MSD), it expanded from the Uses and Gratifications theory which identifies how people use and become dependent upon the mass media, and it closely relates to Agenda-Setting theory which states that mass media dictates what we think about.
The media dependency theory focuses on the segments that impacts media effects and the context in which the power of media becomes strong or weak. The most important reason of the theory is that individuals in present day …show more content…
