Title Performance enhancing drugs are not beneficial for athletes because of legal issues and suspensions, a possibility for an athlete to end their career and ruin their reputation, and long term health risks.
Athletes that use P.E.D’s to improve their performance in the sport that they are involved in can get in a lot of legal trouble for using illegal drugs and could get suspended for their sport. Bob Jacobson states in his article “Major League Baseball players suspended for using performance enhancing drugs, April 2005 - July 2007” that, “In 2005 there were 12 different baseball players that all got suspended for using PED’s. All 12 suspensions were all during the baseball season” (n. pag.). All 12 of the players that got suspended

To start off, “HGH brings its own set of risks. The list includes cardiomyopathy, an enlarging and thickening of muscles in the heart, that weakens heart function over time. HGH can also impair glucose regulation leading to 2 types of diabetes. HGH can lead to heart failure arthritis and acromegaly, or disfiguration of the jaw, skull hands and feet” ( Performance- Enhancing) (Scott). This shows that even though PED’s can help you in your sport for a little bit of time there are always going to be many side effects that can be life threatening and could impact you a lot. “EPO’s have been implicated in the death of at least 18 cyclist during alleged heavy use in the 1990’s. These cyclist were victims of bleeding events: stroke, heart attack, and blood clots in the lungs” (Performance enhancing drugs). This shows that because these cyclist took PED’s to boost their play in their sport they ended up losing their life and everything that they have trained for their entire life has gone to waste and they lost their life because they took those PED’s. “Steroids can interfere with the natural process of puberty. For boys, the sudden surge of testosterone steroids creates can cause male pattern baldness and violent mood swings….They can also cause people to grow breasts and get high voices” ( Drugs and Athletes). Because of young people using steroids the drugs can interfere with their puberty …show more content…
Health risks, trouble with law, and career ending possibilities, and risk of death, is taking PED’s worth it? PED’s will give you a short term positive affect but a long term bad
Performance-Enhancing drugs are an unnatural way of changing one's body, and the effects can be life altering, sometimes better yet always, in the end, much worse. It is for this reason why major league sports have put strict rules in place suspending athletes who use these drugs; the Olympics ban these athletes for life. These drugs harm the bodies and minds of athletes, and they are banned to protect their health for their benefit and for the sports as well.
Performance-enhancing drugs (PED 's) have been an issue for many decades now for the medical and sports field. Olympic and professional athletes have been using them to gain an upper hand on the competition, but some may ask if it 's really worth it? Studies show that performance-enhancing drugs have been proven to negatively affect the health of athletes who take them. Simply put, performance-enhancing drugs could either improve athletic performance or can be extremely dangerous, in certain situations, deadly. There have been strict rules and drug testing in the professional sporting organizations, as well as in world competitions. For example, in the summer of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, in two of the
Performance Enhancing Drugs(PEDs) shouldn’t be used in sports, because of its adverse health consequences. According to an article called Performance-Enhancing Drugs Can Have Severe Long-Term Impact on Health: Expert, in the long term, PEDs can cause impotence, worsening acne, balding and “steroid rage.” This conveys that if athletes use PEDs there will be serious effects and severe consequence to their health. Also, the drugs aren't subject to government safety standards and could be impure or mislabeled.(Article: Performance-enhancing drugs: Know the risks?) Therefore, the illegal drugs and supplements that the athlete consume are dangerous, damaging and potentially deadly. The drug could be made out of something that gives you a disease or even kills you because it doesn’t meet the government safety
The results found that the majority of the athletes thought PED use was a form of gaining an advantage over the competition. Knowing at a young age, before one has fully matured, that using PEDs to enhance one’s skills is cheating shows that the athletes are more than capable to make the better decision to not take PEDs to help them improve their skills without hard work. Another psychological study (Murray) took a stance on why athletes take the PEDs. The conclusions found in this study suggests that athletes using PEDs regularly have a hard time socializing. This leads to awkward face-to-face communication and the study also found that there was also a break in the Social Learning Theory (Murray). Using these studies shows that taking PEDs is bad for communicational purposes, which is important if an athlete takes them since the press wants to talk to the
First, PED use can influence kids in the wrong way and make them believe PED’s are helpful. Second, PED use is also a big problem in sports which can be fixed, through many things such as better testing, and increased education on what PED’s have an effect on your body. Finally the after effects of PED’s are also bad. They can lead to instability and serious problems that get the user into the hospital. Think twice about using steroids. Don’t end up like other athletes that have used steroids. Take them as an example of somebody not to look up
First of all the side effects are horrible, and you will have to live with them the rest of your life. Second, you will have the regret of taking PEDs, and setting a bad example to children around the world who look up to you. And you could be the reason that a teenage athlete dying because of drugs. Third, you could kill yourself, the ones you love, the opponent, or an innocent citizen that you happen to come across when you are taking out your anger. And you can get depressed, or go insane. PEDs should be ban from all professional sports, because they, have horrible side effects that can’t always be fixed, they set a bad example for children, and they can hurt many people including yourself, or make you go insane or get
The benefits of using some types of performance-enhancing drugs are obvious. Professional athletes have a very 'short shelf life' as competitors in most sports and must cash in on their talents as soon as possible. For Olympic athletes, the
Performance enhancers are very prominent in professional sports today. A lot of players are facing suspensions and other penalties for using them. The sport that gets scrutinized the most for this is Baseball. Many former users in the MLB (or formally the NABBP) have come out saying that they were using these drugs while playing. Some of these players are Jorge Sosa, Antonio Bastardo, and the famous Alex Rodriguez. Although these drugs have been prohibited, players are still finding ways around the tests which is why in some other countries they are legal so that no one player can have an unfair advantage.
Steroids and PED’s are used today in sports to help athletes gain muscle mass and strength. Other athletes use them to boost their athletic performance. Today, about 30 percent of college and professional athletes still use anabolic steroids, 10 to 20 percent of high school athletes use them (Lewis). There are many reasons why steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs shouldn’t be allowed in sports.
Dick Butkus, a retired pro football hall of famer, stated, “There is a myth out there that somehow anabolic steroids can turn a cub into a bear. Steroids won’t make you tough and competitive. What they will do is ruin your health. It’s that simple,” on his opinion about the use of steroids. Although the stance against the use of performance enhancing drugs is clear to Dick, not everyone agrees on the topic. Many players, ranging in all sports at different levels, have used PEDs (Performance Enhancing Drugs) at least once in their career to better their abilities and performances. Some of those players have been caught and have been rightfully punished for their use; however, others get away with using PEDs and remain praised above their opposition. I believe that the use of performance enhancing drugs is wrong and should continue to be banned morally by the fans and legally by the commissioners. There are few positives to using PEDs, which ignite the urge for players to become better at their sport for fame, money, or success. Nonetheless, the negatives immensely outweigh the positives. The use of performance enhancing drugs creates detrimental health risks on athletes, changes the way sports were originally meant to be played for the worse, and shows unacceptable influence on fans and children.
Performance-enhancing substances have been a hot topic in professional sports for many years. Although most people have heard about them, they do not realize that they can be a major problem for adolescents. Steve Pasieb, the President and CEO of Partnership for Drug-Free Kids stated, “‘Young people are seeking out and using performance-enhancing substances like synthetic hGH- and supplements purporting to contain hGH- hoping to improve athletic performance or body appearance without really knowing what substances they are putting into their bodies (Feliz).”’ Adolescents using performance-enhancing drugs are likely to be harmed, due to the dangers that come with taking them. Taking PED’s can be a huge problem for teens. These drugs can affect
Former NFL superstar and Hall of Famer, Lawrence Taylor once said, “Steroids are for guys who want to cheat opponents.” The use of steroids is banned in professional and organized sports. Performance enhancing drugs should not be accepted in professional sports. Performance enhancing drugs also known as PED’s, violate rules, give players an unfair advantage, and send a terrible message to young athletes. There are many types of PED’s but the main two are Lean Mass Builders and Stimulants. Lean mass builders, which increase the growth of muscle and lean body mass, are popular for athletes who play contact sports. Stimulants can increase athletic performance by increasing focus, energy, metabolic rate, and aggression.
Want to know how to get bigger and stronger without having to work as hard as normal? Willing to take the risk of getting into trouble to make gains? Well than PED’s will do the trick. PED’s, also known as performance-enhancing drugs (PED’s) can benefit a person, but at a great cost. The disadvantages outweigh the benefits when it comes to PED’s. Many professional athletes face consequences due to the use of PED or steroid use. Therefore there are many easier ways to get things done, but may not be worth the consequences.
The use of PED’s has many different effects on the body and mind of a person. They can be used to improve the ability, or strength of an athlete but can also be dangerous. There are many types of drugs that people use to get an edge over there opponents.
Thirdly, many serious side effects and health risks are involved with using PEDs. The benefits of these drugs are really not worth the risks. ‘It is already known that steroids cause liver damage, heart attacks and strokes.’ (Mirkin, 2007) What’s worse, these drugs harm not only the athletes themselves but also harm their children. Mirkin (2007) said that, through a study on the children of the athletes who use PEDs, ‘more than 25 percent had
