I have always thought of myself as a mild user of media outlets. Over the years, I have found my usual circle of media that pertains to what I desire to get out from the usage. I am not relatively a social media junkie, but I do cater to the apps Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook to stay connected with others, Soundcloud to listen to music, and the “Today” tab standard on iPhone’s to check weather, stocks, and current events. I find these media outlets useful because they are all accessible on one single device, making it easy to access quickly and efficiently. I rarely pick up a newspaper, listen to the radio, watch the news, or access other social media apps because I simply feel that I am achieving everything I would like to know or do through what I am used to. For this assignment, I will be using Tumblr, the radio, and the Papers app. I am excited to have eye opening experience that helps me understand other media and why people would use it. After googling Tumblr to be directed to the home page, the description of the page is a “microblogging platform and social networking website that allows user to post multimedia and other content to a short-form blog”. I skipped the sign up page I was directed to and jumped my browser to the trending page. There, three columns of pictures were nicely organized on the page. The boxes contained funny and inspiring quotes, beautiful photography including cats and cities, and screenshots of famous people’s tweets and pictures. With
The single most important media experience for me was listening to the “Gilmore Guys” podcast. In my media log, it is apparent that I came back to this form of media multiple times throughout the day. It was my go-to form of entertainment when I was walking from place to place (for example, 12:21 to 12:40 I was walking Uptown, and 1:30-1:44 I was walking from Uptown to King Library). This is the most significant media experience from that day because it spanned most of the day, where most of my other media experiences, like specific text conversations and looking at articles online, were singular and did not last the whole day. Even in the instances of checking email and Facebook, which I did multiple times, each time I checked I would be looking at new media (new status updates and emails), where as with “Gilmore Guys” I was coming back to the same episode of the podcast over and over again. It is also significant because it prompted me to watch an episode of the show “Gilmore Guys” is about, “Gilmore Girls,” in order to engage even more with the media
Firstly, I noticed how much media speeds up our everyday lives. Essentially everyone is multitasking; it is a way of life in our society. I noticed multitasking at its finest when I went to the library later that day. People are researching online, writing papers, Facebook stalking, instant messaging and listening to their iPods all instantaneously. The instant access to everything has formed our culture. I find myself running on autopilot when it comes to using media. It took the full 24 hour fast for me to realize how dependent I really am on media to make it though the day. The stress I was feeling without the security of my phone or ability to communicate whenever I wanted to left me feeling helpless. Media not only speeds up daily activities, but it has given
These theories will be useful in determining my underlying motivations behind my choice of media and content and how my experiences help shape the meaning I provide to the former. Although I have a very active lifestyle, media does consume the largest portion of my time. For the sake of this analysis, the table above simply refers to the television shows and movies I watched throughout a week, however it is important to note that in addition, all time spent of the phone, computer, reading and listening to radio also comprise of media consumption.
Utilizing the new sensation of technological media, with its instant projection to a broader audience base, can be both advantageous and unfavorable. As media is frequently updating
Technology! It’s everywhere! You can’t live without a phone. More importantly, a phone that can do everything a computer and a phone can do. So, for entertainment media to broaden its platform, you must get creative and put yourself in the user’s perspective. To be honest, it works and everyone is captured by the new experience every time a new update comes out. An example American culture has valued is the news. The news isn’t necessarily positive because there is something always going in the world
Often, people seem to not notice how much of an impact media can have on an individual or a family. This assignment required us to consider the presence of media and technology in our lives and how our “normal” compares to the national averages. I believe that the lack of personal devices I owned led me to use less media as a result. Media, in my family, was a tool to experience something about the world and was a way to connect to each other, instead of distance ourselves like many people unfortunately do. These conclusions gave a better understanding about how media does impact my life in very indirect ways.
The mass media I used the most this past weekend was Snapchat. The reason I used snapchat the most is because I prefer to communicate and talk to my friends on snapchat. The media I did not use as much was Netflix. I didn’t feel the need to watch movies or a certain show. And also because I know if I watch a show or 2 on their I will start to binge watch the whole entire show so I stop myself from spending my day only on Netflix.
First, the internet. The concept of the internet emerged as a mass medium in the 1970s and remained a platform for communication used mostly by educated, elite users until the development of the world wide web in the early 1990s. The internet grew quickly and rigorously in popularity as developers created web browsers that simplified the process of connecting via personal computers. Media organizations soon began to recognize the web’s value as a medium capable of transmitting and communicating information instantly and in greater depth and clarity than was ever possible. Over time, media groups began increasing their reliance on the web by building more sophisticated and complicated sites to display things such as video, audio, print, graphics, etc. Almost 73 percent of all US adults enjoyed having a connection to the internet in 2006, and a recent growth has occurred in the acceleration of high-speed internet service. More than 42 percent of American adults had broadband connections in 2006, which was a remarkable 40 percent increase in broadband use from a year earlier. News organizations were cautious and warry when they transitioned onto the web while journalists cautioned against almost a loss of control and maybe function within a more fluid, interactive environment. The need to change to keep consumers was overwhelming though and gave the organizations no other choice. Traditional print and broadcast organizations especially adapted to and/or embraced the change of medium with transmitting information because of the continued crumbling and decline of audiences and consumers. Because of the internet, journalism has changed a bit with how information is distributed as well. Now people are sharing and distributing information through blogs, podcasts, video sites, and popular social networking sites. Throughout the
In today’s world media literacy has become a very important commodity among our digitally connected society. With so many users connected to social media mediums such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc. it is very important that people understand how to properly analyze, evaluate, and interpret media as well as develop the ability to create media. This, in essence, is what media literacy is about and with so many different sources of information streaming through our daily lives all at once, being media literate can not only help us discern actual facts from fiction, but it helps us better understand some of the complex messages we receive from these sources. Throughout this essay I will discuss my media literacy by talking about different media products and how they have impacted and helped shape my life as well as the culture of our society.
“Right on the shooting line, right on the frontier of change.”- stated by one of the most intelligent, and influential communication theorist of all time, Marshall McLuhan, has advanced and changed the worlds perception of media during the 20th century. “The medium is the message” is said to be one of the most famous statements in history as it focuses towards the overall idea of media, studying the traits and effects of the senses of an individual. Though he is hailed as an influential figure of the internet age, having understood the power of the internet long before anyone else, many new things have been introduced to the world of media today. Whether it is an app to communicate through the use of images and tweets, or an online movie
On the website of Facebook, it says to ‘help you connect and share with the people in your life’. Then Twitter tells people to ‘see what’s new’, and Instagram moves a little bit forward – to capture and share wonderful moments around the world. Basically, nowadays new media are encouraging more people to get involved and be together. All of this cannot be achieved without the invention of the Internet and, even more importantly, mobile phone. As 80 per cent of Twitter users are active on mobile devices, the majority of these are likely to be Smartphone users (HMA digital marketing 2014). From the wild range media effects have spread, it is easy to understand one aspect of media power is depended on technology.
What about the bigger bets like making a large acquisition, or the roll out of news feed, or something like that? How do those decisions work?
Media literacy can help clear the fog and help illiterate adults understand the media world. Potter stated, “You are able to build the life you want rather than letting the media build the life they want for you.”(Potter 34) Being able to control one’s own thoughts and not fall into trends is something that is not common in the world today. There is always a distraction trying to capture people’s attention. Potter says, “Attention is directed or grabbed without any voluntary choice have taken place even against the strong wishes to the contrary.” (Potter 45) As one is in conservation with a roommate, an image pops up on a computer screen, which shifts their attention away from the roommate. Being self-aware of one’s presence and being attentive to each other is unconsciously being the normal trend; instead of being conscious of one another. Which media had programmed into another of the necessary needs to know what is going on in another’s life instead of engaging in the connection and moment present. When focusing on life’s goals, it takes a person’s memory built with care and precision to understand the media's influence. When not in control of drives and goals one gets weak and default to media control.
The worth of media is a very controversial topic. Media has given us the ability to do things in new and creative ways such as how we learn and accomplish our everyday tasks. However, we do not always know how to interpurate this information. The technology available today is constantly impacting and influencing society in tremendous ways. Many of the impacts that are accocated with media are addressed in negative ways, but can be seen from a positive perspective as well. In the current generation, media and its influences can be found everywhere. These influences widely impact today’s adolescents and maturing teenagers because they are still developing into adults. Medias purpose is not only to inform us, but to allow us to mold ourselves in how we want to be perceived online. Also, it allows us easy access to unbelievable amounts of information. Living in an era known as the “information age” is riveting, but what are we suppose to do with all of this new technology and information?
A simple tweet or a facebook post is far removed to the media my parents accessed many years ago. I have been long fascinated by the way media has developed around me and the role I play in the evolution of it. Production of digital media not only excites me, but challenges my very being as I am only a minor part in an ever developing media world. The evolution of media stemming from technologies and innovations which are changed, adapted and evolved everyday brings a whole new level of relevance to the core of the course. The many facets of technological media has changed the way we live, the way we communicate and the way we interact as a society. Not only does it allow me to be creative with my digital designing, but it also allows me
