Alfie Kohn discussed multiple fabulous points in his article, “Degrading to De-Grading”. The author suggests more effective ways to assess students’ progress other than numerical or letter grades. Kohn goes into detail about why our current grading system is flawed. Grades can cause students to lose interest in learning which causes them to stop taking challenges. If students are not engaged and interested than they are not retaining the information they are being taught. The grading system can also cause students to develop unhealthy competition with one another for instance, “I got a better grade than you!”. Indeed, grades are a wonderful concept, but they tend to be more hurtful than helpful. In some cases, grades can have positive effects on students. For example, setting goals for various assignments, or receiving help where they are struggling. Though, there are alternatives that could make positive changes in the system.

Herman emphasizes our attention to the question about necessity of grades as an indicator of the true efforts among students. Russell L. Herman compares the different thoughts of teachers about this statement: some instructors against the grade system because they think that students should come to class in the purpose to learn something, not to have higher grades. Other instructors identify grades as an indicator of educational level. How does the grading system and learning go together? What makes learning something gradable? How can the grading system base a child 's knowledge off of a test alone? These questions and more have popped up in educators minds for years. These are the thought that have had people like Liz Mandrell, Jerry Farber and Steven Vogel rectify the grading system in their own views. Many of these authors give valid reason for understanding why student are affected by the grading system the way they are.

Despite the good intentions, tacking letter grades on assignments rather than qualitative feedback also causes students’ future performances to ultimately suffer as their intrinsic motivation to learn and flourish is diminished. The current grading system encourages a “carrot-and-stick” approach to learning, as students are encouraged to complete assignments for the sake of avoiding failure. Even though the system was originally intended to evaluate performance, “grades are routinely used not merely to evaluate but note also to motivate” (Stan). Encouraging students to work towards the bare minimum required to pass a class proposes a routine which consists of no genuine gain on behalf of the students or the teachers. In fact, various studies have reflected that the administration of grades can “dampen existing intrinsic motivation, [...] enhance fear of failure, reduce interest, decrease enjoyment in class work, increase anxiety, hamper performance on follow-up tasks, [and] stimulate avoidance of challenging tasks” (Schinske). Poor performance on graded assignments can serve to discourage students, but even high-performing students face challenges when they learn to settle for merely satisfactory work and fail to expand their learning opportunities and horizons. The first thing I expolored is why current grading practices utilized in many schools no not necessarily reflect accurate student achievement. First and foremost, grading varies from teacher to teacher. So if a student gets an “easy” teacher, grades may be inflated, whereas if a student gets a “hard” teacher, grades may not look as promising. Teacher values and beliefs on education play a major factor in this variance of grades. Consequently, under most current practices where teachers can determine how the will grade students, different teachers may grade the exact same course very differently. For example, one teacher may have different categories of grades carry a different weight (ie, tests might be 50% or homework might be 10%, participation or attendance might factor in), while another teacher might grade strictly on a total points basis. Because of these, and other notable differences, I am pleased to see that schools are utilizing an approach which strives to eliminate extraneous factors and which puts more meaning into the grades stu dents earn (Cox, 2011).

Teachers have always used grades to measure the amount a student has learned. This practice is becoming ineffective. Many students have a wide range of grades, which show that grades may not show what a student really knows. Therefore, the standard grading system should be replaced. Some reasons why grades should be replaced are bad grades can hinder a child’s performance, grades define who a student is in the classroom, and grades are not an effective way to see if students have learned the material. The current grading system should be upgraded and every school should incorporate the plus/minus system in their method of grading.

In many education systems, there are always some commonalities- regardless of the politics within that particular school setting. One significant commonality is through the grading system. The idea of assessing a student based on their value of knowledge and comprehension has been gradually overshadowed by the point values in general. We are teaching in a world today where students are more concerned with the amount of credit they are receiving for an assessment rather than the information they are learning and obtaining from the course material and how this new set of knowledge can be applied in their everyday life.

Education help us reach our life goals and dreams. Students who receive a higher education are more likely to have a better and stable life. Although the style of disciplines that are strictly enforced in traditional schooling is unacceptable for many students, but it could also have a lot of positive impact to prepare them for future. Students are always looking for freedom and how to not be under controlled. Positive disciplines teach them how to behave well and work together to create a better community. In terms of curriculum, everything that's being taught in school can be used and applied in life only if the person is striving to succeed. Individual's social class, religion, language, race,culture and intelligence shape their performance on education.

Higher education is critical in this generation and is very useful for social and economic growth, and stability. In many careers, a higher education of some sort is typically required, and/or preferred. Although many work places require this advanced education, some aren’t in a place to receive it. Whether it deals with financial burdens, family issues, or life not going as planned, many individuals find it very difficult to further their education in order to fulfil their dreams and be successful in every aspect of life.

The modern education system in America continues to have many issues that need solutions, and there ought to be solutions to those problems. In general, teachers today increase grades to satisfy students and administrators, which does not allow students to learn the content they study and often does not prepare them for college or the real world after that. Furthermore, grades cannot reflect a student’s knowledge of certain skills and content studied. To combat this, students should become aware of their achievements or lack of progress—and grades should reflect these outcomes. Unfortunately, true learning has become almost obsolete, and grades cannot reflect learning if students are not motivated to learn, and instead are motivated to receive high grades. Education is basically the process involves by facilitating learning, or the achievement of skills, knowledge, habits, beliefs and values. Education is considered as the golden ticket to a better life. However, this golden ticket is not acquired by many young individuals, during the perfect age to pursue higher education. At the preset era, students lack proper interest in the benefits of the institutions that are surrounding them. Education has becoming less available to the general public; the main reason behind this is the increased cost of higher education. This happens due to the enormous reductions to funding colleges and universities.
