Education helps us reach our life goals and dreams. It can be valuable, beneficial, and rewardable to those who strive to do their best in college and find the major, college, and specialty that will suit them. Students who receive a higher education are more likely to have a better and stable life. Although the style of disciplines that are strictly enforced in traditional schooling is unacceptable for many students, it could also have a lot of positive impacts to prepare them for the future. ____ Grading systems are a positive motivator that helps students successful by striving to get a better grade. As a human, motivations is an important factor that pushes us toward success. In a disagreement with Michael Thomsen who wrote an article called “The case against grades”, “ There is always something or someone to blame in our struggle for education reform. Sometimes it’s the “bad teachers” who get the blame. Other times it’s standardized testing, insufficient funding, or slow-moving bureaucracy. I blame grades.” Although, the grading systems differ from a country to another, but eventually they serve the same purpose of grading students based on their performance and commitments. Formal schooling degree is important to obtain a better opportunities in life. Growing up in an uneducated family in Egypt was a struggle, especially when you have a very talented and interesting family. My family was barely educated. Most of them quit school at a young age, so they never had the chance to achieve their life goals because they do not have a degree, so The majority of my them are financially unstable and have a low income. How does the grading system and learning go together? What makes learning something gradable? How can the grading system base a child 's knowledge off of a test alone? These questions and more have popped up in educators minds for years. These are the thought that have had people like Liz Mandrell, Jerry Farber and Steven Vogel rectify the grading system in their own views. Many of these authors give valid reason for understanding why student are affected by the grading system the way they are.
Despite the good intentions, tacking letter grades on assignments rather than qualitative feedback also causes students’ future performances to ultimately suffer as their intrinsic motivation to learn and flourish is diminished. The current grading system encourages a “carrot-and-stick” approach to learning, as students are encouraged to complete assignments for the sake of avoiding failure. Even though the system was originally intended to evaluate performance, “grades are routinely used not merely to evaluate but note also to motivate” (Stan). Encouraging students to work towards the bare minimum required to pass a class proposes a routine which consists of no genuine gain on behalf of the students or the teachers. In fact, various studies have reflected that the administration of grades can “dampen existing intrinsic motivation, [...] enhance fear of failure, reduce interest, decrease enjoyment in class work, increase anxiety, hamper performance on follow-up tasks, [and] stimulate avoidance of challenging tasks” (Schinske). Poor performance on graded assignments can serve to discourage students, but even high-performing students face challenges when they learn to settle for merely satisfactory work and fail to expand their learning opportunities and horizons. The first thing I expolored is why current grading practices utilized in many schools no not necessarily reflect accurate student achievement. First and foremost, grading varies from teacher to teacher. So if a student gets an “easy” teacher, grades may be inflated, whereas if a student gets a “hard” teacher, grades may not look as promising. Teacher values and beliefs on education play a major factor in this variance of grades. Consequently, under most current practices where teachers can determine how the will grade students, different teachers may grade the exact same course very differently. For example, one teacher may have different categories of grades carry a different weight (ie, tests might be 50% or homework might be 10%, participation or attendance might factor in), while another teacher might grade strictly on a total points basis. Because of these, and other notable differences, I am pleased to see that schools are utilizing an approach which strives to eliminate extraneous factors and which puts more meaning into the grades stu dents earn (Cox, 2011).
Teachers have always used grades to measure the amount a student has learned. This practice is becoming ineffective. Many students have a wide range of grades, which show that grades may not show what a student really knows. Therefore, the standard grading system should be replaced. Some reasons why grades should be replaced are bad grades can hinder a child’s performance, grades define who a student is in the classroom, and grades are not an effective way to see if students have learned the material. Higher education is critical in this generation and is very useful for social and economic growth, and stability. In many careers, a higher education of some sort is typically required, and/or preferred. Although many work places require this advanced education, some aren’t in a place to receive it.
