I empathized with Gregor during the story because of how his family treated and abandoned him. It was really sad because his family basically gave up on him and took advantage of the fact that he worked to provide money to the family. Once he became a bug they abandoned him, and his own sister who he was close to thought he was too much of a burden. Gregor was planning on paying for his sister to go to college for music. I do not believe anyone deserves the fate that theses character’s received but Ivan’s character and integrity throughout the story appeared questionable to me. Thesis Statement: While both Ivan Ilyich and Willy Loman are unsatisfied about their family situations, Loman’s family is willing to take actions and care about Loman when he encounters hardship and stress, whereas Ilyich's family gives him less sympathy about his illness.

    In the face of Morrie's overwhelming compassion and tenderness, Ivan Ilych presents an opposite lifestyle. After a pleasantly carefree childhood he turned towards ambition and pursued an ever-larger salary and an ever-increasing social rank. Ivan lived without values and without attachments, easily moving between cities and jobs. The physical death he must face at the end scares him because it forces him to realize the life he has lived has been completely false. When confronted with death Ivan starts retracing his past, wondering what he has done to deserve such pain and suffering. He realizes when he is bed ridden that he was much more alive as a child then as an adult. In chapter five of The Death of Ivan Ilych, Ivan admits that “…the further back he looked the more life there had been. There had been more of what was good in life and more of life itself,” (Tolstoy 238). If one were to observe small children play, they would notice it does not take much to hold a child’s interest, and often they are much more fascinated by things that don’t work correctly then things that do. With the pressure to conform to society’s views of perfection as an adult, Ivan loses the liveliness he possessed as a child. Having to face death terrifies him because it forces him to admit he actually did not do the correct thing like he thought he did.

If the characters had truly cared about Ivan, they would have been more content with attending the funeral ceremonies and not seen it as another task to be completed.

Underneath it all is a different world of oppression—specifically, for women in the bourgeois class. In Henrik Ibsen’s play Hedda Gabler and Leo Tolstoy’s novella The Death of Ivan Ilyich, both works depict female characters in the bourgeois class who face the societal oppression and cope with it in their own way. These oppressions are often set off by the male characters, constructed by the bourgeois society.

Ivan Ilyich is introduced as a working man "liked by them all", although from the start you understand that he is dead (Tolstoy). This differs from Gregor 's story where he is introduced as being "transformed in his bed into a horrible vermin," and the readers do not know that Gregor is eventually going to die in the story(Kafka). In the beginning of each story both men are likeable. The indirect characterization allows the reader to analyze the behavior of each character to further understand their personality. Ivan is known as a man who places heavy importance on work. This is known early into the text. Gregor is very similar in this aspect as his own mother states to his employer, "The lad only ever thinks about the business"(Kafka). Ivan felt "the whole interest of his life now centered in the official world," creating a similar mindset with Gregor(Tolstoy). It is not until later in the text that the reader understands what a toll this takes on the family life.

We will begin with an analysation of his family situation. Praskovya, his wife, had been a love constructed from the start of an economic and sociological expectation rather than that of a true courtship. The happiness therefore of the union was derived solely of a necessity to fulfill a desire on the part of others for a “success” of sorts, surely her desire as well. “Ivan Ilyich could have counted on a more illustrious match, but even this one was quite good. He had his salary, and her income, he hoped, would bring in an equal amount. (Tolstoy, 56)” Tolstoy goes on to make several remarks on the benevolent nature of the relationship between he and his wife. The arrival of his children creates no great marker in his life, and proves to be little more than a factor in his ever-lengthening retreat into his life of solitude and work.
