Should Vet Schools Be Allowed to Use Live Animals For Training?
Should Veterinarian students have to practice on animals before they become a Veterinarian? This very question is causing a debate in the veterinary community. Many people have very strong opinions on the topic. Students should be allowed to pick their classes regarding animal use.
The first vet school was opened in 1879, and animal rights have changed drastically since then. Since the first vet school was opened, the number of protests about animal rights has grown. Research shows that 140 reported animal deaths that occur at universities every year. “ A national leader in protecting animals and human health, the full- service laboratories at VDL [Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory]process

If a student is a visual learner then using animals for educational purposes would make vet school easier for them. When a vet student graduates vet school they will go get a job where they will have to do operations daily. Although using simulations and props will help educate the students they will not experience the full feeling and problems that can occur in a surgery. (¨Vet School (Nat Geo Wild) Race for hope¨). If a sick animal goes into the vet and they are assigned a new veterinarian and they don't know how to handle the animal, how will that work? Models, mannikins, and simulations are often used for projects in vet schools, but they don't always accurately represent the animals. (¨Animals in Teaching¨). While in vet school will go through many procedures such as spay/neutering programs, and feral cat clinics. To complete vet school to complete ability you will have to do several different studies that will involve the use of animals (F. Ellen Netting ,Cindy C., Wilson, John C. New) . Many people do not realize the importance of using animals in vet schools procedures .As said by Dr.McCurnin,
¨When I was in veterinary school at Iowa State University back in the '60s, I always liked surgery. Surgery labs back in those days, there was absolutely zero thought about the animal itself. I'm talking mostly about what the animal felt. It wasn't because we were cruel or we didn't want to be concerned about animals.

When vet schools used to use animals it wasn't thought as of being cruel to the animals it was thought of as an educational experience (¨Are Live-Terminal Laboratories Necessary?¨). Although these are good arguments there are also several arguments against using animals in vet school. Many schools have backed away from using animals in their studies. “ Fortunately only a dozen of the nation's 125 accredited medical schools still use live animal labs” (“Medical Training Using Animals”). This quotes is saying that 12 of the 125 schools still use animals for educational purposes. That is only 9% of the medical Universities, in the United States (“Medical Training Using Animals”). Common animals used in vet schools are dogs, pigs, mice, rats, and birds. These animals are picked because of their body type, and by the procedures that can be done on them. These 5 animals are commonly used because they are the most common animals that a veterinarian will see in their office. These are also the easiest animals for a University to get their hands on (¨GRADUATE AND PROFESSIONAL SCHOOLS¨). In labs, animals are anesthetized then injected with medicine, tested, and later the animal will die. Many people find this cruel but others look at it as the circle of life. Thousands of animals have been killed due to scientific demonstrations. The operation that is being done that day will depend on what animal will
In becoming a veterinarian students must first go through all of the schooling and training required to acquire a license to practice.
Animal vivisection is the study, experimentation and research of any animal. Animal rights activists are opposed to using animals for medical research and experimentation because humans do not have the right to use animals. With very few exceptions, we do not experiment on humans without their consent. Animals can’t give informed consent and the vast majority of experiments using animals are so invasive and damaging, that we would never even consider allowing humans to being subject to such experiments. Every year, animals are dissected, infected, injected, gassed, burned and blinded in hidden laboratories all over the world, most of the time without anesthetic or pain killers. If they aren’t killed by the testing, the animals are often not kindly but brutally killed. The dead animals are frequently left stacked in wheelbarrows in front of the animal cages.
The reason being because they have to advise animal owners about the general care, medical conditions, and treatments for their animals. Just like a regular doctor for humans, veterinarians, have to prescribe medications. Lastly the saddest part of it all, in some cases a veterinarian would have to euthanize an animal ("Summary" U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics).
Additionally, I have a large number of students each year who plans to pursue careers in the medical field after high school. And, I believe these
To begin, the experimental use of animals in medical studies is unethical. These creatures are confined in isolated cages where they are deprived of necessary environmental elements. It is not uncommon that they undergo ghastly methods of experimentation; including the inhalation of toxic fumes, the burning of their skin, and the crushing of their spinal cords ("People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals"). This information sheds light on the grim realities of animal experimentation. These creatures are living, breathing beings that do not deserve to be treated as they are nothing more than lab objects. Not only are they ripped from their natural habitats, but are forced to endure an irreversible psychological trauma . To put it in perspective, imagine a six-month-old child being taken from their parents and sent to a lab to undergo scientific experiments that could ultimately result in
Using animals for medical experimentation and education is a controversial subject that often leads to a heated debate. The issues are complex, but the suffering and waste involved in animal experimentation are painfully obvious. Vivisection, the act of cutting into a live animal, has led the nation down countless scientific dead ends, while detracting funds and attention from more applicable scientific research. The practice of animal experimentation at NYU continues, not because it has been proven to be an accurate and reliable means of research (which it has not) but rather, because of tradition and promotion from those with strong vested interests (i.e. Lynne Kiorpes). These values have
I do not have any experience in health care or veterinary medicine. A hobby that I feel like helped me gain skills that could easily transfer over to helping animals would have to be helping out at my local elementary school with the young children. Children and animals are alike in that they make noise when they want something, love attention, and enjoy being praised when they have done something good. They are different in the fact that children can verbalize with words what they want while animals can only make sounds to try and show you what they want. I have personally first hand seen how much joy and happiness animals can bring to society as the local elementary school has had dogs come in and listen to the students read to them causing the students to not feel any pressure or worry. I heard about Black Hawk College’s Veterinary Sciences program through Black Hawk’s website and word of mouth. Just knowing the basics about taking care of animals and children can really help me succeed. By completing this course, I hope to gain a deeper insight into Veterinary Medicine and helping animals thrive as best as I
Animals are used for a variety of different tests. Human disease cures are always tried on animals first, most make up must perform experiments with the product on animals first, and dogs and pigs are used to practice surgery on for surgeons. It is not fair and humane to conduct experiments on animals to make sure a product or procedure is safe for us to use or endure. There are no legitimate reasons that an animal’s life is worth less than our own. I think that animal's should have similar rights that people have because they too feel pain and experience emotions and just because they look different doesn’t mean that they are that much different than us.
As he proceeded to numb the L2 and L4 vertebrae then making a vertical incision on the right side of the cows abdomen I though to myself that this is something that I could happily do for the rest of my life. Therefore, this is why I am applying to the master’s program of Veterinary Biomedical Science. I feel that it would be a perfect way for me to increase my knowledge and help me gain experience ultimately helping me build a stronger foundation that will make me stand out and enable me to gain admission into the College of Veterinary medicine. In addition, this program appeals to me because It would give a chance to do research which I enjoy and find rewarding. It would allow me to write a thesis on the research I have completed building up my resume.
My reason for pursuing the Animal Science Major is because I know that it is the first step in becoming a Veterinary Science Major. I have the desire and passion in becoming a Veterinary Surgeon and owning my own practice. By achieving those goals, I will have the utmost control and ability to make the decisions that can save the lives of my client's pets and livestock. I have always had an affinity for the calming and personal peace that pet ownership could bring. I believe that by becoming a veterinary surgeon I would possess the ability to aid the owners in making the choices that are beneficial both to the owner and to the wellbeing of the animal. There is what I like to think is very humane responsibility given to us
In addition to caring for animals they also help to protect and improve the health of humans through research, but in my case I want to work in a private practice setting caring mainly for pets or companion animals. In the atmosphere of a clinical practice the daily job duties include but not limited to diagnose health problems, dress wounds, perform surgery, help birthing animals, prescribe medication, and vaccinate animals. Also providing instruction regarding matters such as animal breeding, housing, feeding, and behavior. Veterinarians are also the ones who euthanize animals that are too injured or sick to recover. While caring for animals, there is a wide variety of medical equipment in which they have to perform numerous of tasks with. Because Veterinarians job involves providing urgent medical care which involves working long hours. In addition to keeping regular office hours, they are often on call to respond to emergency and urgent situations. The majority of people who work in this occupation put in more than 50 hours per week according to the AVMA. Paul R Greenland and Anna Marie L. Sheldon states that Pre-veterinary students must earn an undergraduate degree that includes heavy course work in science and mathematics, as well as additional course work in English, social science, and business. Identifying what this field consists of helps me determine my
There is an extensive variety of veterinarians such as large animal, small animal, mixed practice, exotic animal, and lab animal veterinarians. Small animal veterinarians work with companion animals, such as dogs and cats while large animal veterinarians work with livestock, such as cows, goats, pigs and horses. Animals in zoos and sanctuaries get their veterinary care from exotic animal veterinarians. Lab animal veterinarians provide medical care for animals used for scientific studies, like lab rats. While these are completely different specialties, veterinary residents will rotate in working will all different types of animals. Towards the end of their residency, veterinary residents will determine what specialty they would like to go into and work from there.
My dream career, since I was a little girl, was to become a veterinarian. I have always dreamed of helping animals by searching them lovely homes with caring owners. In the summer of 2015 I was given the opportunity of traveling to Boston to attend the, Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, at Tufts University. I was eligible to experience a one-on-one interaction with many different kind of animals. I was able to gain an amazing insight into the day-to-day life of a running a veterinary practice and being a veterinary surgeon. I witnessed an operation on a dog’s leg and another dog getting put in the MRI for cancer treatment. In those two weeks, I interacted with various small, and exotic animals. I observed how vets handle emergencies, treatments, and surgeries. I also took an anatomy class during which I dissected a cat and a dog.
Animal Experimentation leads to death/illnesses/mental illnesses. Animals suffer everyday from undergoing purposeful injuries and deadly surgeries that when happening don’t even get a pain killer or antibiotic to calm or numb the pain. Usually all experiments and surgeries lead to death and suffering,”Animal Ethics that concludes that the practice is “unthinkable” and “in terms of harm, pain, suffering, and death, this constitutes one of the major moral issues of our time””(Goodman Justin ⅓) Animals die and suffer from the pain they have to got through just to see if one little item will help clean a house or help out cosmetologists or even a little pill that they think can cure cancer but really only kills animal.
Animal examination saves lives. A few animals that are used in experimentation are a small price to pay for all the progress we’ve made in the medical field. I read somewhere that animal’s must suffer so that humans don’t have to. According to the L.C.Animal website, 97% of 10 Billion animals are tortured and killed each year by factory farms. According to Peta website only 100 million animals are killed each year, which includes rat’s frogs, and
