Vibrio vulnificus found in the Hampton Roads area
Issued 5 April, 2016
In the Hampton Roads area we have a special scientist that test our waters and they are with a company called Hampton Roads Sanitation District also known as HRSD. In recent years a flesh eating bacteria called Vibrio Vulnificus has been found in Hampton Roads area, specifically at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. It is very concerning because a lot of people that live in the Hampton Roads area enjoy swimming or surfing in the ocean, as well as tourists who come. If the Vibrio Vulnificus spreads no one will want to visit to the oceanfront.
During the summer of 2012 the HRSD tested the waters of the Virginia Beach Oceanfront. When they test the waters they
The data from our experimental design supports the idea that the pH in the Chesapeake Bay is decreasing and becoming acidic. Our team used the following materials to test this idea:
The Raritan Bay has over 200 years of waste and chemicals polluting its water to this day! The water that comes through the Raritan Bay is not safe to fish, swim, drink, or
THE CHESAPEAKE BAY DEAD ZONES This is an article written by the Daily Press titled "The Chesapeake Bay dead zone this summer worst since 2014". The theme is how marine life can be affected by these dead zones and how we will find a way to fix this issue with the farmers. If we don't find a way to fix how many dead
On June 19th, my classmates and I had field trip for Oceanography Lab (OCN 101) class with Professor Ocean Matt Horrigan. We went to Corte Madera Salt Marsh, which is located 12 miles North of San Francisco, to examine how rising and falling of tide effect on
Child born to a free parent and one slave parent, the status of the offspring will be based on the status of the mother not the father. This could impact the growth of the enslaved population and making slave children profitable for slave masters. The law for Maryland, 1664 stated if a freed woman is to married a slave man she will be treated like her slave husband. In Virginia, 1667 states that Christianity does not release a slave from bondage so Christians could own other Christians. They feared that the slaves will runaway this is the reason why Virginia closed the pathway to freedom in 1660’s and lastly in Viginia , 1663 it stated that the slaves are not allow to leave anywhere without the permission of their masters and if wonder off
Wound Botulism is transmitted when C. botulinum spores germinate and produce toxins within the exposed wound. No person to person
CDC receives reports of over 400 Vibrio illnesses each year. Of those, about 90 per year are due to V. vulnificus. Most V. vulnificus illness occurs during warm-weather months. Individual can contract V. vulnificus found in oysters and other shellfish in warm coastal waters during the summer months. Since it is naturally found in warm marine waters, people with open wounds can be exposed to V. vulnificus through direct contact with seawater, shellfish, and marine wildlife. (CDC,
Clostridium difficile has infected up to 500,000 people in the United States every year. Clostridium difficile is a bacterial infection it can cause diarrhea and also a fever. It has also caused death among people. There has been a recorded 14,000 deaths from Clostridium difficile a year.
Scientists have studied the impact of water borne pathogens over time. Just how dependent human life is on the waterways is one such question which arises. The study involves the effect of such pathogens on human life. This study was narrowed down to the area of the Chesapeake Bay in Virginia. The Chesapeake Bay each weekend is occupied for recreational use. Such activities as swimming, fishing, and body surfing are common place. Normally each year thousands of pounds of seafood are distributed from out of the bay. There is a vast amount of people who come to visit the area each year.
In Pensacola Bay the results of the Bay over time can be represented by various reports as in this report found in the years of 2007 and 2010 and from previous years in 2012-2013 reports for a rough comparison of data within past few years (2011-2014 period) and part of the first decade from (2000-2010 period). In the first set of data collected by Escambia County Utilities Authority (ECUA) that notes throughout the data on their table that demonstrates all values associated with samples taken as the Maximum contaminant Level (MCL), or the highest level of containment that is allowed in drinking water compared to Maximum Contaminant Level Goal (MCLG) that represents the level of water that represents no risk and allows for margin of safety (4). In the ECUA’s report the water quality from wells with which it uses to provide Escambia County its fresh water. Though this is not directly from Pensacola Bay, the ECUA report still reflects the
Equality 7-2521 has changed drastically since the beginning of the book, as well as The Golden One. Making such innovative finds, and rebelling against the government, only to be beaten and sentenced to death, typically changes a person. Finding love when you’re not supposed to, and running off into the woods, avoiding your death penalty and ignoring all laws is not something Equality 7-2521 would have done in the beginning, for he was a law abiding citizen. However, he gradually started to bend the rules until he no longer acknowledged nor cared about them at all. I believe that he was right in doing so because the government had hidden so much and had taken total control over its citizens’ lives.
One of the most damaging algae species known to Florida along the south-west coast is the Karenia brevis, also known as Florida red tide. These microscopic algae bloom all year around in the Gulf of Mexico producing brevetoxins, which contains a suite of neurotoxic polyether compound. These blooms can last as long as 18 months fluctuating between insignificant blooms to critical, impacting both the marine ecosystems and humans health (Pierce and Henry, 2008). The Florida red tide will continue to be the cause of unexplained fish and other animal deaths, along with human illnesses unless more research and observations is done to find a way of controlling these algae blooms.
Vibrio is a rod shaped bacteria that are also gram negative. They naturally appear in marine or estuarine environments. Also to note there are around about 12 species vibrio that have been known to cause diseases in humans which cause around about an estimated 80,000 illnesses, 500 hospitalizations and 100 deaths ever year in the US. The main reason that people get infected by vibrio is from coming into contact with seawater or through consuming raw or undercooked seafood. Vibriosis usually causes primary septicaemia (blood poisoning), diarrhoea, wound infections, or other extra intestinal infections. Vibrio parahaemolyticus is a strain of vibrio that has a rod shaped is usually found in saltwater and if ingested can causes gastrointestinal
Another fact is that the death penalty is not a deterrent. Reports have shown in 2008, the 14 states that did not have active capital punishment had surprisingly low homicide rates. They were actually at or below the national homicide rate. So, there is no documentation or proof that having capital punishment deters criminal acts of violence. In fact, in 2009, a survey showed that over 88% believed that the death penalty was not a deterrent for heinous criminal acts. Thomas Sowell, a columnist at the Hoover Institution couldn’t have made a deterrence case any better when he said “We know that the death penalty deters those who are executed. The fact this this is obvious does not make it any less important. It is certainly not less
When I was younger, I had this fight with my older sister and many times before that as well of course I usually never won because she had more knowledge over the topics than I did, but during that one fight I had finally won because for the first time I had more knowledge over the topic and learned that the more knowledge you had in an argument the most power you had. In Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury, Guy Montag is a fireman who burns books because books are seen as a nuisance to society and soon Montag seems to realize that books are important. He realizes that books hold more value than expected and he risk his life for books. The only thing is it’s not as easy as said and Guy goes through many obstacles for the books he once burned meeting new people, learning new things, and facing many problems along the way.The theme mainly presented throughout the book was knowledge is power.
