After reading Frankenstein, the audience sees the way Victor Frankenstein interacts with his experiment and his excitement towards it, until the Monster is crafted and Victor is terrified of his own creation. The main gothic anxiety that Frankenstein plays with is fear; fear of the unknown and fear of the monster’s capabilities. The novel takes place in the eighteenth centaury throughout Europe and the Artic. The variety of locations that the novel takes place is significant because it shows the distance between Victor and whoever he is running from at that instance. In the Bible after Jesus was baptized Jesus fasted for forty days and forty nights. While he was fasting, Satan appeared and tried to tempt Jesus into turning bread out of stones. Jesus did not fall for the temptations but Victor did fall for the temptations from his supernatural source playing in his mind. It seems as if Victor Frankenstein is charmed with the thought of death: “To examine the cause of life, we must first have resource to death.” (78) In order to create a living thing Victor must have access to a dead body to analyze the process of death. In other words, Victor is wanting to learn the cause of life by working backwards through an entity that was once alive. Victor talks about corpses with no attitudes of respect: “deprived of life…food for the warm” (78). Victor does not look at bodies as if there were once a living person or animal. The thought of someone digging up burial sites and collecting body parts to create a monster would be classified as a psychopath which questions Victor’s sanity. There is a possibility that there is something missing from Victor’s life and this is the reason why he is infatuated with the dead because he can relate to the deprived of life notion. In Shelley’s Frankenstein, the monster is portrayed as a grotesque abomination. However, as Hopkins states in Contending Forces, the cultural and geographical situations, or lack thereof, in which one matures in play a crucial role in the proper development of one’s mind and brain. The monster is simply a product of circumstance. The lack of social interactions alongside geographical isolation propelled the daemon to be alienated from society, ultimately resulting in a lack of morals and an underdeveloped psyche. By being a culmination of his surroundings and experiences it is revealed that the true monstrous entities are the factors that leave the daemon predisposed to fail in a modern society.
