Vietnam War Failure

The Vietnam War, also called the “American War” in Vietnam, began in 1954 and ended in 1975. A conflict between North Vietnam including their allies the Viet Cong, and the government of South Vietnam and its allies, fighting for total control of the country. A war in which Communism had a very influential participation of the North, and U.S. influence in the south. But it was not until March, 1965 that the first American combat troops would land at China Beach, north of Da Nang, and continue to fight up until August of 1973 when the U.S. finally decided to end their involvement in the war.

The Vietnam War was, and continues to be, one of America's darkest moments, one that nearly tore the nation apart. In order to stop the spread of communism in Europe and Asia, the United States aided French imperialists and their reoccupation of Vietnam. At first, the U.S took a position of neutrality to both countries, but by early 1947, they began fighting in support of France. This war, lasting over 20 years, became the longest and most unpopular war in the 20th century. Overall, the Vietnam War was detrimental to the United States because it caused a massive debt from the 1960s to the 1990s, turned the American people against their government, and many troops were neglected and despised upon their return.

With the Guerilla Warfare tactics that were taking place--the dropping of Napalm on the Vietnamese civilians was devastating because this toxic chemical was being dropped regardless of if there were men, women, children or enemy soldiers being involved. Let’s start from the beginning, the start of the Vietnam War started way before the fighting and war actually happened. The start of the Vietnam War really started at the end of WWII. Tension grew between the United States and the Soviet Union. The Soviet Union were a communist government, and the United States was very firmly against that. The United States had a fear of communism growing and that sparked the urge to get our foot in the door, and stop it. (Vietnam at War, Bradley) Northern Vietnam was also a communist government which of course meant they sided with the Soviet Union, which means we did not agree with North Vietnam. South Vietnam was not a communist government and they did not agree with the rules and the intentions of North Vietnam. This is where problems began.

The Vietnam war had a substantial effect on the United States society and how the outcome of the war had taken place. The Vietnam war is known to the world as America’s biggest loss and longest war. There was a struggle with the United States strategies that caused the fail of the war. Also, a huge communism disagreement that the United States tried to stop being spread. There were several reason for the failure of the United States during the war, one of which was the fact the the Americans were an invading force, and the Vietnamese had home field advantage by fighting on their own soil.

We lost the Vietnam war because we did not understand the terrain, gorilla warfare tactics, and reasons to why the Vietnamese were fighting,not for communism but for Vietnam.
