Violence at school is defined as physical or verbal attacks on a person while on school grounds or on school property ("School Violence essays", 2017), or any activity that is able to create a disturbance in an educational system (Blanco, 2017). In today's societies, School violence is spreading dramatically, which has caused many problems among students, families and faculty of schools.

The most recent shooting at the elementary school located in Newtown, Connecticut have shifted our focus on the question of whether or not we are doing enough to protect our students in our schools across the nation. Every morning, parents send their children to school every morning trusting that they will be returning home the same day, but as we all know that isnt always the case for some. The tragedies that have taken place show that we need to pay more attention and provide more resources in improving our school safety. I personally believe that all child have the right to education, therefore have the right to live and learn in a safe environment. Research has been shown that students perform at their best, and that productivity is shown to increase when they feel safe. School’s play an important role in ensuring students physical and emotional needs get met in a safe environment, however there are issues to this day that need to be faced and worked through by the union of a community of students, parents, teachers, and administrators. I call for a reform on the way we handle school safety procedures/policies and one reasonable approach is the role of preventing future school violence.

Violence in American schools is dramatically increasing every day at an alarming rate. Whether it is a generic fistfight between students, or a horrific school shooting, we hear about some form of violence occurring in American schools nearly every day, including in our own local schools, such as my school, the Altoona Area Junior High School. This kind of behavior in our school, AAJHS, is obviously a major safety hazard. In an attempt to lessen this violence and protect students, principals should take action and begin conducting random locker searches to check for guns, knives, and any other weapons contributing to the excessive violence in our school. Taking this action would also help deter the selling and use of drugs and alcohol in our school, and it would also make students, parents, and teachers feel safer in our school.

Zoe came to school today with her hair in a low bun. She wore an off white crochet cardigan with dark gray jeans. Her sneakers were white Nike sneakers known as “uptowns”. School violence has been around since the 1800’s, it wasn’t until just recently when things started getting worse and more people are getting hurt and scaring our younger generation into thinking this world is a terrible, unsafe place. The bullying and downgrading people have gotten out of control, especially when it comes to school places. School is supposed to be a safe place and a good learning environment, but with kids who pick on each other and take things too far, school can be a very miserable place. From as far back as anyone can remember there has always been bullying going on among teens and kids; even adults these days. When people are put down and bullied all their life, they are actually scarred from it. It can lead to depression and anxiety, or kids who act out because they want attention. Violence in schools is a big social issue that occurs almost everyday throughout the United States. There is no way to tell when it is going to happen, but when it does, people need to be prepared. This violence leads to devastating effects on the students, teachers, and families of these kids. Some violence that occurs within the schools across the United States include physical, mental, or sexual abuse, theft, vandalism, and, the most common form, fighting and bullying. One form of violence within schools that doesn’t come to mind right away though, is gun violence. Going to a smaller school in a smaller community, this wasn’t a big concern, but it can happen within any school, anywhere.

Why does school violence have such of an effect on our society today? School violence is the intentional use of physical force or power, group or community, with the behavior likely to cause physical or psychological harm. Most school violence start from differences between teenagers. Like for instance about some weeks ago this girl named Amy Joyner died over this boy. The girls that jumped her was mad that she was dating one of the girl’s ex boyfriends. It was not her fault that the boy had no more interest in them and wanted to try something new. For the careless actions upon the situation caused one girl to die and 3 charged with attempted murder in the second degree. School violence is just a cry for help in need of attention because of the home training they are lacking at home. I am arguing today we look past our differences and actually communicate and come to some sort of agreement. Let your understanding speak louder than your misconceptions. We as people have to own up to our mistakes and not make every little thing an issue that causes another’s life at jeopardy. In the article school violence by Jaana Juvonen she states that “Bullying and more serious violent behavior are not separate problems. Childhood bullying predicts person-oriented crime in young adulthood.” How do you feel when you lose another loved one due to violence? What if you try to make a change, but it has gotten so worse

  Conflict and differences of opinion exist in every healthy organization. Americans need to try to take control of today's youth and the violence that is and has been developing in this country for many years.  Although violence will never be extinct, there are many different ways to reduce violence.  Each school and student population has different ways of dealing with and helping to curb the need for violence in schools.
