Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is often thought to be a play of endless love and passion. However, many readers come to the conclusion that although the play oozes out love, violence plays a big role as well. From the beginning of the play, pandemonium surrounded Verona, with fights breaking out all time. Sampson and Gregory are already speaking of violence, then Benvolio and Tybalt began to fight. This play began and ended with violence. The violence in this play is driven the by great Capulet-Montague feud. Both families are so caught up in each others hatred for one other that they cannot see the impact it has on their families. When he saw that Romeo had made his way into the Capulet’s party, Tybalt was boiling with anger. "This, by voice, should be a Montague. Fetch me a rapier boy” (I.V. 54-55). Against the Prince Escalus’ commands that if another fight were to ever break out, it would result in death, Tybalt still decides to fight Romeo. He is then settled down by his uncle Capulet and this only makes Tybalt’s anger even more ruthless. Not even Tybalt’s powerful uncle Capulet can stop him from challenging Romeo. This shows that Tybalt carries an enormous amount of honour for the Capulet name and will not go down without a fight. Mercurio also fought with honour for the Montague name and ended uo dead. Mercurio replaced Romeo in the fight with Tybalt. The result of their own pride left both Tybalt and Mercurtio dead. Even Juliet acknowledges this with “My only love sprung from my only hate” (…….) Loving someone who is your supposed to be your arch enemy will definitely bring complications into Juliet’s family, knowing this Juliet still continues to pursue the relationship. This makes the violence between Capulet and Montague flourish. From this incredible amount of love for one an other, Romeo and Juliet’s great love results in a powerful amount of violence. Violence is locked into Romeo and also Juliet’s minds from their chaotic society. After Romeo had been banished from Verona he speaks of suecide if he cannot be with Juliet. “Ha, banishment? Be merciful, say 'death”. ( ) With this Romeo is implying that death were to be better than being banished from Verona. Romeo then offers to stab himself for causing Juliet so much pain. Romeo solves his problems with violence, the only solution he knows for everything is always ending with someone dying.
