The Vista courthouse experience was very informative. The only downside to this experience was not being able to stay and watch the proceedings in department 14. I really enjoyed watching how easily department 14 flows with the high volume of people. I didn’t understand the codes they were using, which made it harder to know what people were being charged. One thing I did notice just by sitting and trying to understand the codes was the appearance of everyone. Most people looked a little dishevel and like they were part of the lower SES. Another thing I noticed was the ability to navigate the court system that people displayed. It is easy to say that many of those people were not first timers. In When We Fight, We Win by Greg Jobin-Leeds it says that “comparison can block compassion both for others and for ourselves.” I agree with such statement; I think that listening is a skill you learn throughout time. One can pretend to listen without really getting anything out of the conversation that one is having with that other person. In the Compassionate Listening workshop, I got to do it with Rachel Kurland and I sit and listened to her talking about the moment her friend treason her. I tried to understand her plight, why would she not cut that friendship off, I understood she loved her friend, however, I could not resist bringing my biases to our conversation. This simulation experience allowed me to practice my focused assessment skills, delegation of tasks, prioritization on of tasks, interdisciplinary communication skills, and skills that I have not been able to participate in such as blood administration. I learned that my strengths are patient education, delegation, noticing changes in patient condition, and working as a member of a team. I need to improve my speed of completing tasks, my confidence, and my process of working through new skills.
On October 21, 2014 I went to a court to listen in on some proceedings. It was pretty difficult to find one that was open to the public in this court. Many courtrooms were private or some hearings were irrelevant with what I was looking for. The bailiffs were really nice they helped guide us to the big courtroom that allowed proceedings to be heard by the public. There were some trials that we couldn’t attend because it was a more serious crime or there were juveniles involved and since they are under age we couldn’t be there for it. The courtroom I was in had a professional atmosphere to it but kind of unorganized because there were a bunch of papers all over the place and some of the inmates didn’t show up so the judge would put them to the side. Majority of the inmates being held for drugs, driving under the influence, or physical violence.
Being located in the Federal building I have received tours of the court rooms and have had the opportunity to meet the judges and their staff. I feel I have been given a great lenses to observe the interworking of the courthouse and how cases progress through the criminal justice system. I was still filled with anticipation and was quite surprised at the differences between my first and second experience. I was formally dressed and did not really blend in with anyone else sitting in the courtroom. The attorneys seemed to come and go as they pleased, with no deference or respect for the proceedings in session.
A few months into this program, I fell flat on my face. I had been doing well juggling the ever-growing list of assignments, until we were assigned Lab Report #1. The science concepts went over my head, resulting in false information as well as a poorly written, list-like paper with many mechanical errors and no flow. Once I received the rubric in my mailbox, I was completely devastated and disappointed in myself, this was the first time I failed. In that moment, I decided to rebound from this and not let it define my year, so I met with Mr. Mercurio and rewrote it, most of it from scratch. Upon entering into Barry University (B.U.), I was an insecure black African- American woman full of passion coupled with a myriad misconceptions of what I thought social work consist of. However, during my two years as a undergrad student I learned that those misconceptions had kept me stagnant in facing and understanding my past traumatic events of life that could have had an negative effected on further clients and how I interact with others. I visited that area 2 times within September 1st & 2nd. My first visit September 1st was at department 31 of the Court Proceedings. I walked within the courtroom at 1:30pm to find myself observing multiple convicted citizens sharing a similar action of resisting their probation of the law. Some of the probations problems mainly related to restraining orders and many other complicated matters. The court ended at 3:00pm. Reflection is a major factor in "developing self-awareness" to improve services provided to everyone around me, this is to develop my own understanding in realising the good and bad made previously. Moving forward with a better understanding, as well as rectifying the mistake whilst recognizing the good points, (Horton-Deutsch and Sherwood, 2008).
Looking back at project 3, I felt very happy with the essay I produced. I am not one to enjoy writing since I usually do not feel very confident in my writing. I felt the work I produced through project 3 was one of my best. I put a lot of effort into this essay and it showed in my final draft. With this being said, after comparing my essay to the rubric I gave myself a 3.64 overall on this project for many reasons. This essay in no means was perfect, but I learned from my strengths and weaknesses.
Throughout the quarter in UWP 1, I have learned that good writing takes time and multiple drafts to develop. In all of my assignments, I have revised and made at least 3 drafts before submitting the final. With each draft, I noticed improvement in focusing on one main topic. For example, in my literacy narrative, I was confused with the prompt at first, so my first draft was confusing where I talked about multiple experiences in high school. However, after going through peer reviews and edits, I decided on a single event that affected my writing the most, which was my Sophomore year of high school. The college literacy project focused on presenting information towards an audience. Before this class, I thought the best way of presenting information would be in the form of a text or essay, but after using a PowerPoint for my college literacy assignment, I was proven wrong. Since the last report I have continued to experience a lot more cases and different types of courts. The different courts range from drug court, veterans court, mental health court, recovery court, and so forth. Recently I experienced my first veteran’s court, which I saw two very familiar faces. I actually got to see Denise who works at the VA and Carl who is a probation officer for the veterans. They came and gave a presentation when I had your Interpersonal Relations class fall semester. They are very well respected and take their job very seriously. One of the veterans were graduating from the program offered to veterans when they commit a crime. The court was decorated with a lot of American flags to show support of the veterans who have fought for our country.

The reason that I enrolled into the introduction to writing course, or WRTG 101, is because it is required in order to receive my degree. I actually tried to avoid this course by completing the college composition exam through the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP); unfortunately, the University of Maryland University College’s (UMUC) credit by examination guidelines still require that students take WRTG 101, even if they get a qualifying score(“College Level Examination Program”, 2016). My writing skills were good enough to complete the exam with a qualifying score, so I definitely considered myself pretty good at writing. Before this semester, I didn’t know what was expected of me in a college writing class. I thought there would be tough requirements and the professor would assign around five to ten pages for every assignment.
