The reason that I enrolled into the introduction to writing course, or WRTG 101, is because it is required in order to receive my degree. I actually tried to avoid this course by completing the college composition exam through the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP); unfortunately, the University of Maryland University College’s (UMUC) credit by examination guidelines still require that students take WRTG 101, even if they get a qualifying score(“College Level Examination Program”, 2016). My writing skills were good enough to complete the exam with a qualifying score, so I definitely considered myself pretty good at writing. Before taking WRTG 101, my writing skills were decent, but now I feel more capable of applying the writing process, …show more content…
I would think about what I wanted to write, but it took a very long time to develop my thoughts and then put those thoughts on paper. In our first week of WRTG 101 we covered this in Section 8.1 of Writing for Success (2013); I found that using experiences and observations or freewriting is a great way for me to begin the writing process (The Saylor Foundation). This allows me to get my ideas on the paper, which is normally one of my greatest issues. Once I have the ideas, I can begin to focus and organize my paper. Section 8.2 of Writing for Success (2013) covers how to construct an outline for a paper (The Saylor Foundation). This was particularly important for me while writing my research paper. Listing my main points in order of importance allowed me to focus on one at a time before proceeding to the next. Grammar could be one thing that I was confident about before attending the WRTG 101 course. I realized that I am not as good as predicted, which can be verified by my Comfit progress report. I really feel that the Comfit exercises have helped tremendously throughout this 8 week course. In addition, the interactive grammar exercises and quizzes allowed me to gather a greater understanding. I feel that all of this has helped me minimize my mistakes while writing, which was apparent to me from instructor feedback throughout the
My first step in the writing process has remained relatively the same. I begin by reading the assignment sheet, and then begin brainstorming topics that I could use for the essay. Usually I come up with two or three ideas for me to explore, in case one topic does not have enough information to turn into a good paper. After thinking of a few ideas, I pick one idea that I think is the best, and I try to come up with a basic outline of the paper. Then, I search on Google and read a few articles that I find to see what information is available on the topic and how I can use the information in my paper. It is at this point where I decide whether or not to go ahead with the topic depending on what I find. If I continue on, I widen my search to databases and focus on more credible internet
When beginning to write an essay everyone has their own method of doing so. Some may like to brainstorm while others may prefer to go straight into writing about their topic. I personally beginning every essay by collecting ideas about my topic before coordinating them into a type of diagram, next I proceed to do my rough draft before revising over the paper and finally composing my final draft. The point of the writing process is to help break everything down so ideas can be organized and everything can make perfect sense for not just the writer but also the reader.
General Studies Writing (GSW) 1110 has provided skills that have taught me how to be a better writer. In the past semester, I have acquired many new skill sets and expanded on skills I already had knowledge of. In the beginning of this course I had implemented an improvement plan which included: Using better word flow, choosing more scholarly words, creating paragraphs that were very knowledgeable and lengthy, using many peer editors and online editors (including Bowling Green State University's Learning Commons, Paper Rater, and Grammarly), and replace over used words with synonyms. By implementing this improvement plan I wrote several amazing papers and have exponentially grown as a writer. I have excelled in areas such as: electronic
For the summer of 2015, I enrolled as a student in University of Maryland University College (UMUC) to start the journey of earning a bachelor's degree in Cyber Security. For the starting course requirements, Writing 101s was one of the three classes I had picked to begin with. When I first started off in this course, I considered my writing skills poor, with unorganized paragraphing and horrible grammar skills. Now, I am able to write great with more organized essays, proper sentence structures, and also gained researching skills for future research projects or assignments. This course has dramatically increased my confidence in writing and I feel that I am able to write at college level and not middle or high school.
Secondly, writing ideas is the other skill I learned in the process of writing my paper. My lecture advised me to write the ideas about the topic I choose. Then I started writing them whenever I get ideas which are may be right or wrong but, this step and skill helped me to analyses and evaluate
I have attended WRA 110 almost four months and I appreciate that I have a deeper and further impression about American college writing. Since I am an international student, honestly, I am not good at writing at all, I have to spend more time on fixing some grammar problems in writing, especially, analyzing article. Sometimes I even very struggle with how to write it clear for readers, but after I accepted advice from professors and peer review, I have improved my writing skills and learnt a lot from the class.
Finding your own writing process is crucial for a writer in order to write a successful paper. Everyone is unique and everyone’s writing process is going to be unique as well. A writer’s notebook is a perfect way for people to record random thoughts, dialogue you hear, and any other ideas you might hear. Brainstorming is a key technique to get started when composing a paper. Brainstorming allows you to think of different topics that would fulfill the requirements needed on your topic assigned. Freewriting, clustering, listing and outlining, and collaborating are also some other techniques that when practiced could come very useful when writing a paper. Having the ability to use either of these five techniques would help tremendously when composing a paper.
I always start my writing process by reading the directions. I read the directions three or four times to fully analyze what is required and what is being asked. For instance, in most assignments are not simply questions. There are usually more than one factor in the question. After understanding the directions, I start following the five steps of the writing process. First, I pre-write/ draft a outline to get my ideas into answering all the parts of the question and to establish. Next, I start writing to establish flow of my paper. Then, I submit it to paperrater.com to check for grammar, punctuation, and spell check. Then, I edit my paper from the suggestions paperrater.com suggested. Lastly, I submit my work for a grade.
riting 101 was the second college course I have taken. Before I started taking college classes, I had not attended any type of academic classes sine I graduated high school in 2012. Going into this course, I thought I was not going to benefit very much from it but I was wrong. I had forgotten the majority of what I learned in high school. This writing course not only helped me to refresh my writing skills, but also taught me new things that I know will be helpful as I continue my education. When I realized I had to take this class I thought it would be easy for me. I soon realized that even though I had taken advanced classes in high school, in many ways I was not prepared for college level writing.
When I think about writing, I feel intellectually ravenous toward the subject I am given. When I am tasked with a writing assignment I figure out how I feel about the subject and what ideas I could incorporate into my writing that pertains to the subject. I find it easier to write after knowing how I feel and doing research on the topic to gain a better understanding of what I'm supposed to be writing about. After studying the subject, I organize my paper and construct the layout of the paper to see how I want my paper to flow, and what emotions are to be portrayed in my writing. This part is very important to do because I am a horrible writer without knowing beforehand how I want everything to sound and flow. After the planning process, I
My writing process starts before pen meets paper. When I receive the assignment and read the rubric, my mind starts working. I have a general idea of what I am going to write about, along with a few main points. My writing process is like a puzzle; it is very confusing to most, but makes sense to me. I have realized my faults and how important it is to be more organized in order to improve my writing process.
In this training, I need to write a complete essay in about 20 minutes without the help of the phone or computer. At the first GTW practice, with the pressure from the limited class time, I made about 11 simple grammar mistakes in the essay. Then the professor asked us to do the Error logs which can help me to realize the vulnerable part of my way to use grammar. After several weeks, I got accustomed to GTW and finished the fifth GTW essay rapidly with only a few mistakes. Therefore, I realized this project’s objective. It truly enhanced my proofreading ability and reduced my rate of grammar
After the preparation process, organization my ideas and connect them with outlines. I fill the enough supports under my outlines at first. And that details must related with the topic directly in the first step, because if I choose wrong supports and subjects of each paragraph, it becomes horrible even I can’t fix it after finishing it. Then I start to make the first draft.
I entered this class with a general idea of what was going to be expected of me and what I was going to have to accomplish in order to be successful, and I credit the extent of my preparation for this course to the extensive instruction and critiques provided for me by my high school teachers. By them I was taught the fundamentals of composition which allowed me the time and energy to more deeply understand the intricacies of good writing which I would be taught in college. Although I learned many new concepts in English 101, I feel as though I had a stable foundation to build on and enhance with more refined skills.
I believe I have achieved most of the course learning objectives as I pass this class with a c or higher. I undertook the writing process we learned in class and it has helped me become a better writer. Before I entered my freshman year of college I didn’t know how to write. But as I undertook the writing process I was taught in class I now know how to write. First when it came to writing my assignment papers for my class I grabbed a notebook and did prewriting . I brainstormed a list of ideas for my papers. I then had a plan on everything I was going to write about. I then sit down and write my first draft. I make sure my first paragraph is a strong
