Booker T. Washington main focus was based on the reasoning that African American can improve or situate themselves through education, trade training and ownership. The idea behind that is, with education, ownership and status respect and equal rights would follow.
W.E.B. Dubois main focus was on the advancement of color people. He co-founded the NAACP. Du Bois has a theory that one and ten black men can become leaders of their race. He called this the “the talented tenth” Du Bois thought that African American should have the natural right of having equal rights and abilities.
Charles Houston Main focus was on legal counsel and basic human rights with laws. Houston spent most of his life fighting the idea that separate is not equal. Houston
When it all comes down to it, one of the greatest intellectual battles U.S. history was the legendary disagreement between Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. DuBois. This intellectual debate sparked the interest of the Northerners as well as the racist whites that occupied the south. This debate was simply about how the blacks, who just gained freedom from slavery, should exist in America with the white majority. Even though Washington and DuBois stood on opposite sides of the fence they both agreed on one thing, that it was a time for a change in the treatment of African Americans. I chose his topic to write about because I strongly agree with both of the men’s ideas but there is some things about their views that I don’t agree with. Their
The debate between Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Dubois turned out to be one of the greatest intellectual as well as inspiring battles in our United States history. This great debate sparked the interest of African Americans and whites throughout the entire country. Both men had distinct views on how blacks should go about progressing politically, socially, as well as financially here in the United States. Both Du Bois and Washington wanted African-Americans to have the same rights as white Americans; But Du Bois encouraged African-Americans to demand equal rights, while Washington, on the other hand, often ignored discrimination. He believed that it was important for blacks to develop
Booker T. Washington's beliefs surrounding the improvement of African Americans are shown in his "Atlanta
Booker T. Washington believed that blacks should not push to attain equal civil and political rights with whites. That it was best to concentrate on improving their economic skills and the quality of their character. The burden of improvement resting squarely on the shoulders of the black man. Eventually they would earn the respect and love of the white man, and civil and political rights would be accrued as a matter of course. This was a very non-threatening and popular idea with a lot of whites.

Furthermore, Booker T. Washington did not share strategies with Du Bois on one side, and the strategies of W. E. B. Du Bois did not share with Washington. Booker mostly focused on education and wanted African Americans to fight for what they’re worth, to work hard and become someone important in the community. On the other hand, Washington fought for equality. He wanted the White Americans to respect the blacks. His point view was that the community should be led by the most talented. Basically, he wanted blacks and
W. E. B. Du Bois and Booker T Washington had very different views about their culture and country. Du Bois, being born in the North and studying in Europe, was fascinated with the idea of Socialism and Communism. Booker T Washington, on the other hand, was born in the South, and like so many others, had a Black mother and a White father. Thus being born half-white, his views and ideas were sometimes not in the best interest of his people.
The United States societal system during the 19th century was saturated with a legacy of discrimination based upon race. Cultivating a humanitarian approach, progressive intellectuals ushered in an era of societal reconstruction with the intention to establish primary equalities on the pervasive argument of human race. The experiment poised the United States for rebellion and lasting ramifications. The instantaneous repercussions for both races evolving from the emancipation of African-Americans were plainly stated by the daughter of a Georgia planter in the summer of 1865: "There are sad changes in store for both races" (Nash 469). The long-term
The African Americans will have to show that they are useful beings that can both excel and perform at challenging jobs. In essence, Washington’s plan was for African Americans to prove themselves to the dominant white race by acquiring high economic status. (Gibson, "78.02.02: Booker T. Washington and W. E. B. DuBois: The Problem of Negro Leadership.”) However, Booker T. Washington’s job of accepting white supremacy place African Americans in an inferior position. Civil rights leaders should be working for equality. By mainly going after jobs, African Americans will gain economic status but they will forever be considered inferior because of their skin color. Civil rights will not come along because of economic status.
W.E.B. DuBois was a very strong advocate for black people being treated equally to white people. He co-founded the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) Which was a very important part of the civil rights movement. The NAACP was “created to work for the abolition of segregation and discrimination in housing, education, employment, voting, and transportation; to oppose racism; and to ensure African Americans their constitutional rights”. He also created a book called “The Souls Of Black Folk” Which made him more popular, with the main Idea of the book being that the “central problem of the Twentieth Century is the problem of the color line.” He was a man who fought for equality, where Booker T. Washington, on the other hand, did not. Booker T. Washington thought that black people should in fact have different rights then white people, and that instead of fighting it, black people should just accept it, and focus on economic self-improvement. He also believed that black people should not fight for equal rights, because it would lead to more anti-black violence, such as lynching which is the act of killing someone, most commonly by hanging, by mob action and without legal authority. By these facts you can tell that Washington and
During the time of segregation, African Americans did not feel very welcomed in the country that they only knew as home. The United States was meant to be a land of the free and home of the great but blacks still had to fight for their rights. White Americans used everything in their power to inhibit black Americans to be a part of the society. Although it was a very hard fought battle between southern whites and African Americans, there were some black nationalists that helped lead blacks to success in education, financing, and even politics. One of these extraordinary leaders that African Americans looked up to during this time of hostility, was W.E.B Du Bois. He was a very active nationalist who wanted to challenge white supremacy
W. E. B. Du Bois was an activist, spokesman and, a writer who also supported African Americans. He was able to start “The Philadelphia Negro” newspaper, he tried to show the people what racism is, and how to fight it
Despite the racial inequality and segregation during his time, Booker T. Washington wanted to ensure that his fellow African American citizens were not only received a quality education, he also wanted to make sure that the black people of America were being taught the necessary skills that are critical in the process of becoming a successful in the world of work.
Booker Taliaferro Washington was determined to further the status of African Americans by altering the perspectives of the white community, showcasing their effectiveness towards the rise of an industrial society. Washington sought to reinforce the unyielding support from his antislavery uprising towards his community by sustaining a concrete foundation for his institutions. By enhancing the very platform that brought him success, he was capable of improving the minds of the African Americans in their academic education as well as their training in social customs in an effort to synthesize the black and white community.
W.E.B. Du Bois was an African American theorist who lived from 1868 to 1963 and was a very influential person in history. He described three concepts, which were the color line, the veil, and the double consciousness. He was also able to talk about these concepts from personal experience that he endured throughout his lifetime. These concepts were discussed in more depth in his well known essays called, The Souls of Black Folk.
