I am not an average college student. I drop out of high school during my sophomore year and left home at the age of 16. Supporting myself by finding a job, paying rent, budgeting my very limited fund, became my encouragement and motivation to be wise with my finance. Before giving birth to my first child at the age of 21, I was determined to obtain my GED. Successful at it, it fueled the fire of determination and importance to seek out an academic and professional path. Through the years, the hurdles of being a military wife of constant relocation and raising two children became both my struggle and strength, but nevertheless had led me to consider WAIP opportunity. Emigrated from the Philippines, the moment I step into the American soil, I knew that I was given an opportunity to serve and contribute my unique view of the world. Aside from having a degree in Accounting, my Public Affair major with Public Management specialty, will allow me to …show more content…

I am a senior at Ontario High School and am expecting to graduate this May. I was born in Querendaro, Mexico and then moved to Ontario, Oregon. While in high school I have already obtained a few college credits at a reduced price, but even though I obtained them at a reduced price it was still challenging to pay for them. In my house, there is my two parents, my two sisters and myself, all living with one parent household income and some help. I also had the advantage to complete the Certified Nursing Program as a high school student through the Allied Health. Since I got the opportunity to obtain these college credits and complete the CNA program while in high school, I took the fullest advantage.
Have you ever thought you could be great in a career… if only you had the funds? As a seventeen year-old DACA student, I have faced many financial obstacles in my college application process. As a non-citizen, I am unqualified for financial aid from things such as the FAFSA.This means that I have to depend on my family for support on paying for college. I have always tried my hardest in school to keep my grades as high as possible and learn as much as I could, knowing that one day I would need this education for a better life and career. I am currently in the process of applying to college. However, as a member of a low-income family, it has become apparent that the biggest obstacle between me and professional future is my financial necessity. As
Serving AmeriCorps will allow me to pass the torch of knowledge to empower all that I encounter. My passion is to inspire others to improve their quality of life through higher learning. Therefore, I believe all change first begins with the gift of knowledge. Ultimately, I aspire to help others find their way to self-actualization. I hope to encourage others to reach their life goals and dreams. So, I believe AmeriCorps will be an excellent opportunity to use my skills to change lives. Post AmeriCorps I plan to continue to help within the community and abroad to teach others
Graduating high school, I was decided as a Family Studies major with a track to Child Life at Towson University. Towson is an out of state school, meaning I pay a high rate for tuition as a student. I have had to take out many loans due to the hard times my family has had to endure. In today’s economy, no family has not felt the burden of the market crash and high rate of unemployment. My father’s business went into debt, and by my senior year of high school he was officially unemployed. This caused stress in the family, but my parents have both worked extremely hard to be able to take loans out for my college education, being so important to them.
I like opportunities, I like challenges, and I like to make a positive difference. After graduating college with an Economics degree, I thought of the range of possibilities that would help me reach my goals. I was aware of the fact that I wanted to work for a large and prominent organization with an international scope capable of influencing policy-makers and dealing with a wide array of economic and social issues. I did not want to just crunch numbers and run regressions for a living; I wanted my work to count. Fortunately, it did not take long for such opportunity to come, and soon after I was
In reviewing the different interviews Wilson shares with us, I see that the benefits out-way the risk of taking on debt. However reading other peoples experiences and seeing the reality they now have, has opened my eyes to what the degree will actually give me in the real world. however Ironically my mother Tracy Flores just received a garnishment notice from her employer in regards to $7,000 in student loans. My mother not being able to finish college- a single parent, did well by us making sure we never went without growing up, but bottom line is Flores makes just over 10$/hr, barely making it as is from paycheck to paycheck. After further researching the letter she found out that they will garnish 15% of her net pay. This is more motivation to succeed in my journey and not give up or stop, knowing what the inevitable alternative will be. Though the reality was not quite what I was expecting, I will look to see what areas of study will benefit me the most in the long run. not only financially but also in

Going back to school as a working adult was never apart of my ten year plan as a high school senior. Like most pstudents, I'd expected to finish school and live happily ever after while earning a living in my dream career. I never anticipated my career being far from a dream or deciding to pursue another degree, ten years after my initial decision to pursue an undergraduate degree. I'd never thought about the effect of student loans nor did

I have always been interested in a career as a policy advisor. This role would give me the opportunity to gain experience and develop skills in policy advising, within a large and diverse government agency that suits my qualifications and interests. Policy advisory fits well with my Law and Arts degrees and I have tailored my law degree towards a business focus, which would fit well with the issues that MBIE deals with. Further, the team focus of the role also appeals to me as the collaborative nature of the public sector and MBIE in particular suits my working style well. Finally, I believe that I have a unique perspective to bring to policy research, analysis and advice and I would love to have an opportunity to apply this perspective to
During the late seventies, when Carter was president, a lot of the restrictions were lifted on student loans. This made it easy for low income families to send their children to college. I quit my factory job and off I went to college. I chose a college as far away from home as I could – a whole three and a half hour drive away. That is pretty far for someone who has never been more than an hour from home for more than two days. On the first day, during registration, I realized that a whole new world opened up right in front of me. I experienced so many
Working with nonprofit agencies and AmeriCorp V.I.S.T.A. (Volunteer in Service to America), I had the opportunity to learn firsthand at the efforts given within agencies to service the environment and the public by making changes, and implementing reforms on different issues. I found I have a passion for people, legal policies, compliances, and I am very good as a spokes person, or advocate speaking on change. During the time when I was facilitating as a General Education Development instructor for
