Challenges Walmart is not the only company purchasing goods from foreign countries. The reason Walmart is mostly noticed is because, it’s Walmart. This type of production in foreign countries is done by the poorest people, making less than $1.25 a day. We are all guilty of purchasing electronics and other goods that are not made in the U.S. I do believe Walmart needs to be closely observed due to the history of accusations with employees, bribery and possible fraudulent activity. The focus needs to be more with what is going on in the U.S. and do further research once the internal issues have been resolved. Walmart will continue to be the big name it is and will continue to provide the best prices to consumers. The issue at hand will eventually solve itself as China gets richer, labor will get more expensive and factories will migrate (Kenny, 2015). I believe some of these foreign countries are also playing a part in this type of business by creating imitations and selling them. They know there is a business there because; they are expensive items that not everyone can afford. This article is trying to imply that Walmart is not causing as much bad as they are good. Wal-Mart is destroying our, as Americans, culture and environment. Wal-Mart destroys little shops from our towns, shops that were built by natives and hard-working people. Shops that overcame hardships and reasonable competition are being torn apart one by one in order not to cause too many people filing bankruptcy. Wetlands in America are not being taken care of, as they should. Wetlands are homes and safety nets for many animals. Wal-Mart has destroyed many wetlands in order to build a store in some town people do not even want there.
Walmart also has had battles dealing with sexual discrimination regarding women and as well as members of the LGBT community. Another big issue affecting the welfare of the human population, which is crucial in the development of a stable society and ecosystem, are the work labor issues involved in Chinese factories. Taking a closer look at the issues will hopefully develop an idea of how hurtful Walmart truly is to the environment. In just 7 years Wal-mart had spread into 9 states. By 1979 Wal-Mart was the fastest store to reach a billion dollars in sales. In 2005 Wal-Mart has 3,800 domestic stores along with 3,800 stores internationally, and had made over 312 billion dollars. As you can see the Wal-Mart empire has grown monumentally. To move into this segment of the market would be tough.

The company has over two million workers which makes the leading private corporation employer in the world. Notably, despite the fact that the company is traded publicly, Wal-Mart is more of a family company since Walton’s family still controls over fifty percent of the company’s shares. The company has expanded its business through venturing into external markets such as China, the United Kingdom, North Korea, South Korea, North America, and so forth. However, these markets have produced mixed results in terms of the level of success and profitability. Wal-Mart and other big box retailers are destroying the cultural landscape of America. As Ehrenreich states "wherever you look there is no alternative to the megascale corporate order, from which every form of local creativity and initiative has been abolished by distant home offices." Wal-Mart is a key player in the cultural homogenization of America. It is impossible to "think outside of the big box." Being such a large company with many stores and employees Wal-Mart faces many issues. Some of the issues the retail giant faces are; wages, gender discrimination, and health benefits. It seems too many that Wal-Marts has lost its way. When the recession hit Wal-Mart laid off many of its employees and because of that consumers feel the shelves are not being restock and they can’t find what they are looking for. According to Bloomberg Business Week Wal-Mart went from having 343 employees in a store in 2008 to 301 employees in a store in 2013. Even though the employee cut seems logical it is costing the retail giant business. While this is true, Wal-Mart has not always had the best business practices, receiving many different criticisms over the years. Some criticisms include its relations with people and businesses outside the United States, its role within local communities, and its labor policies and practices. Wal-Mart has always been the superstore that prides itself on lower prices, so much so that it has looked to manufacture in other countries for the cheap labor. Wal-Mart has become so big, that it has stores and plants all over the world.
