1. In what ways, if any, is Wal-Mart exercising corporate social responsibility?
The following definition of corporate social responsibility describes, what is meant by this complex concept: “A company’s sense of responsibility towards the community and environment (both ecological and social) in which it operates. Companies express this citizenship (1) through their waste and pollution reduction process, (2) by contributing educational and social programs, and (3) by earning adequate returns on the employed resources.” In other words, corporate social responsibility (CSR) has a particular strong influence on companies, to operate in a respectable manner, where working conditions for workforce and local communities of its location received a great deal of attention.
In this case it is difficult to decide, whether or not Wal-Mart is a socially responsible corporation. Wal-Mart faced several criticisms, for instance employee discrimination and poor working conditions, relating to its business practices. Wal-Mart’s presence in 27 countries across the world with 10,130 retail stores and its revenues for the fiscal year 2012 of $ 443.85 billion dollar suggests that the company achieving its stated financial and strategic objectives. Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. is also the world’s biggest retailer, so the company is not only a global player, but the leader in the retail industry. Due to the fact that there is no comparable financial data of competitors available in this case, those facts cannot be confirmed to 100 percent.
