Walt Disney came up with the idea of Disneyland while watching his daughters play on the carrousel at Griffith Park. The very bench that he envisioned Disneyland on can be found inside the park on Main Street. The Happiest Place on Earth opened on July 17, 1955. The grand opening of Disneyland was a complete disaster.
Opening day was supposed to be invitation only. However, many people forged and counterfeited the tickets. About 30,000 people squeezed through the gates that day.

Walt made Disneyland his life and tried to be at the park as much as possible. He built a secret apartment and created his own VIP lounge to stay involved with his more affluent guests.
Walt Disney’s secret apartment, although it is closed off to the public, can be found on the second floor of the Main Street Firehouse. Walt spent most of his time here critiquing his live action films while watching over the park. After Walt died, the employees (also known as cast members) placed a candle in the front window of the apartment. The candle never goes out, symbolizing that Walt is always looking over the park.
Club 33 is an exclusive club with only 500 members that Walt created to entertain investors and sponsors of the park, as well as visiting celebrities. (An example of someone who is in the club would be Tom Hanks) There is a 10 year waiting list to join the club. Club 33 is the only place in Disneyland that serves alcohol. Only they are not speakers, they are Smellitzers. They spray out scents such as vanilla or peppermint to draw you into the shops. The Smellitzers are also used on some rides and attractions to make the experience seem more realistic.
Walt wanted the park to be spotless at all times and wanted the guests to only see the magical side of Disneyland. He and The Imagineers created their own color called “Go Away Green” that they used to paint the wall around Disneyland, gates, and any unsightly equipment behind attractions. The idea was that the color is so neutral, that it would go unnoticed by the common eye. The door to Club 33 is also painted this color.
As Walt Disney said in his speech on opening day, “To all who come to this happy place; welcome. Disneyland is your land.” Whether it comes to making your Disneyland experience as realistic as possible or to the eerie souls that supposedly roam around the park, Walt Disney set out to please all of his guests and cast members. Each secret of Disneyland was created for a specific reason by Walt himself, some explained and some will never be known.
