Missions in Life A boy helped an older man keep what was his, a girl with a prosthetic leg crossed over a border to escape to a safer country, and a man cremated a body in the cold arctic with little heat, a wide variety of different missions. However, all three were driven to undertake their mission to help someone important to them. Walt Masters was driven to undertake a mission to help a man to whom he promised to keep an eye on his gold claim. Then, some people came to take his claim ¨but in the face of the threatened injustice against old lame Loren Hall he felt that he must do something. He took some dogs and went to help Loren file his claim quickly. He hurried to help Loren like he promised and ¨They [Walt and Loren] pulled up at …show more content…
Farah and her mother tried to cross the border to escape their war torn country but when they arrived at the border “The gate to Pakistan [were] closed, and I could see that the Pakistani border guards were letting no one through”(Ahmadi 1). She learned though that it was “only a question of money” to be taken across. People went to the guards gave them a bribe, and they were taken through a side door. However, “ We [Farah and her mother] did not have the money to pay them”(Ahmadi 6). Fortunately, they camped text to a friendly family. The mother there said, “That her husband, Ghulam Ali, had gone to look for another way across the border”(Amadi 7). When he returned, he said he had found a mountain pass that led over the border. However, it would be hard for Ahmadi with her prosthetic leg and her mother who had a prosthetic leg. However, when they went across “I scaled that mountain so easily ... perhaps my mother’s problems distracted me from my own.” (Ahmadi 12). Her mother’s problems distracted her from her own. As you can see her mother must have been very important to her to scale a mountain without
Farah Ahmedi’s goal was to cross the Afghanistan border to get to a better life in Pakistan. In the first read, The Other Side of the Sky, it says, “‘Night was falling, we were stranded out there in the open’”(Ahmedi 4). This states it was nighttime and she and her mother had no place to stay. Along the way, her and her mother faced many hardships, “The worst thing would have been if we had gotten separated. We were only risking injury”(Ahmedi 3). In addition, “Terribly warm and we had no water, but we walked. My mother began to wheeze. Her asthma was bad. Her anxiety made it worse. We could have gotten over in little more than an hour if not for my mother. Our journey took many hours”(Ahmedi 11). Overall, they succeeded their mission and made it over the border. For example, “This excerpt from “Escape from Afghanistan” describes their efforts to make
Walt Masters seeked justice for the claim jumpers who jumped an old man’s claim during the Klondike Gold Rush. This story appears when the Klondike Gold Rush was happening. Next to Walt, there was a neighboring claim owned by an old man by the name of Loren Hall. Loren had to go to Dawson, and Walt looked over the claim while he was gone. Walt had an ambition to serve justice and save Loren when his property was in danger. He is a very brave boy who has experienced things other children haven’t, and he will definitely help when someone is in need. “Last of all, he has a good heart, and is not afraid of the darkness and loneliness, of man or beast or thing” (London). This quote shows that he isn’t afraid of anything and that it will help him when he needs
Farah Ahmedi and her mom The Other Side of the Sky were on a journey to get to Pakistan from Afghanistan in search for a better life. However, once they got to the border gate, Farah realized, “The gate to Pakistan was closed, and I could see the Pakistan border guards were letting no one through” (Ahmedi para. 1). There was no way Farah and her mom could get through the gate to Pakistan easily and it would be difficult for them to find another way. Nonetheless, Ahmedi was persistence and found another way to Pakistan, over a mountain, with the help of a friend Ghulam Ali. Farah was courageous and agreed to try the other way to Pakistan. While Farah was on her around a mountain her mom’s “asthma was pretty bad at this point, poor thing. No doubt, her anxiety made it worse” (Ahmedi par.11). Farah and her mom went through many hardships to make it to Pakistan. With Farah’s great
Farah Ahmedi was a woman who wanted to cross the border to Pakistan from Afghanistan. The story “The Other Side of The Sky,” elaborates on this statement by describing Farah Ahmedi’s life, the author states, “Their only hope was to escape to Pakistan”(para. 3). This quote explains that Farah Ahmedi did not want to leave the country out of her own choice, it was necessary. Her country was war torn, so she and her mom had no choice. After the very hard journey to cross the border through mountains, and four years in Pakistan, Farah and her mother were finally chosen to come to America. A quote from an interview with Farah elaborates on this statement by stating, “After four years of hardship [in Pakistan] she and her mother are chosen to come to America.” (authorlink 4). Just because Farah and her mother got out of Afghanistan, didn’t mean that the hardship was over. She had lost all of her family except for her mother when she was in Germany getting her prosthetic leg. Farah wanted to have a better life, so she made the decision to cross the border, helping and changing her life forever.
Why do people undertake missions? Farah Ahmedi and Annie Johnson had to undertake a mission to survive and Ernesto Galarza had to learn a new language and a new culture. Although they don’t have the same mission they have the same purpose to complete their mission. Lets get into this great heroes completing their mission with no mistakes.
With Fara’s loss of a leg, it seemed almost impossible to get out of Afghanistan and into Pakistan. But so desperate to cross the border, they risked their health, especially Fara’s mother’s. “Her asthma was pretty bad at this point, poor thing,” (Ahmedi 11). This text shows that Fara’s mother’s health was not the best at the time and she could have gotten sick. “Because of her, we had to pause every few minutes, so our journey took many hours,” (Ahmedi 11). This shows that her mother was slowing them down because of her poor health.
Nobody fully understands what drives people to undertake a mission, but it often causes people to take many risks. For example, Farah Ahmedi climbed a mountain on a prosthetic leg with a sick mother just to reach freedom. Rikki-Tikki fought for his life to save his family. John Steinbeck eavesdropped on people's conversations just to get material for his book. These stories show different people who had each set a goal for themselves. Ahmedi and Rikki-Tikki fought for their lives to survive and save their loved ones. While Steinbeck traveled to great lengths to write his book. Their goals may be different but they all had set a goal and they all eventually accomplished their goal.
Farah Ahmedi is a young girl with a prosthetic leg trying to escape the war-torn Afghanistan with her mother. According to the text, “Ahmedi and her mother decide to flee their home in Kabul in search of a better life”(“Introduction”). Therefore, they attempt to flee Afghanistan after the tragedies of Farah stepping on a landmine, and losing her father and brother. After attempting to get past the gate and being rejected by the guards, they realized there was no way they were getting past the border that way. They later receded back into the desert and ended up camping near a nice family the next day. Later, the husband came back and told his wife this one route works which the smugglers take. Ahmedi stated, “Smugglers use that path, and they bribe the guards to leave it unguarded” (Ahmedi 8). Due to this, the family let them come with them. The man that found the path works, Ghulam Ali, had told them to rest after the hard days they have had. The next day, they started their adventure on the path. According to the text, “Then Ghulam Ali began to march into the darkness with his family, and we trudged along silently behind them”(Ahmedi 11). During the
Through this inconvenient situation, they find themselves stranded in the desert. According to Farah Ahmedi’s memoir on pg. 11 (The Other Side of the Sky), “The gate to Pakistan was closed… Where would we stay? There was nothing here, no town, no hotel, no buildings, just the desert.” Soon enough, Farah Ahmedi spots the solution to the situation which is to bribe the guards with money. Unfortunately, Farah and her mother didn’t have the money, but luckily they find another helping and compassionate family that offers help to them. This generous family tells them a secret about a goat path that leads to Pakistan which smugglers use too. Based on Farah Ahmedi’s memoir on pg. 12 (The Other Side of the Sky), “The woman told us that her husband, Ghulam Ali, had gone to look for another way across the border. He was checking out a goat path that supposedly went over the mountains several miles northeast of the border station.” The next day, they set out for the goat path. The climb was long and exhausting including with Farah Ahmedi’s mother, which had an asthma attack which took longer and her prosthetic leg, but they preserved. Farah Ahmedi’s determination and the will to survive brought/lead to her success. Farah Ahmedi finds out that even in a grave situation, there are still kind people like Ghulam Ali. Ghulam Ali gave Farah Ahmedi a chance of survival and gave

Growing up in a war torn country, Farah Ahmedi was used to seeing houses being bombed and her city being invaded. As she grew older, she had a freak accident in which she had lost her leg. Along with this, she had to escape her home in order to save her mom and have a better life. Unfortunately, as Ahmedi and her mother approach the gate to Pakistan, they realize that the door has already been closed. Just as it seems all their luck has run out, Ahmedi and her mother meet a kind man named Ghulam Ali who knows how to get them over the border. He tells them of a goat path that smugglers bribed the guards to keep unguarded and decides to take them along with his family on the steep mountains that make up the trail. According to Ahmedi, she “hardly felt the exertion” even with her prosthetic leg and that her “desperation” gave her “energy” which
My family had just moved in the summer of 2013, that meant I’d be going to a different middle school. I was in the Gresham district now, so that meant that I had to go to Clear Creek middle school. Both my sisters went there, most of the teachers knew me because of them. I’d go to all their band concerts and the parent-teacher conferences. I hated the fact that i had to switch schools. I just want to stay at Walt Morey with all my friends and because I was playing football for reynolds. It made no sense to me at the time because Walt Morey was closer to me house than Clear Creek was. I begged my mom everyday to let me go to Walt Morey and she’d always say no. Then registration day came, I was forced to go but I guess it was alright. There were a few familiar faces, but I hated the
Chapter one in the book Constructing a life Philosophy shows a variety of opinions on life philosophies. From what I understood from reading all four of the views was that they believe it wise for people to be flexible in the way we live our lives. I would like to discuss further what each of them had to say.
Walt Kowaski appeared to be a typical man living in his suburban home on lot 9. The weathered house was bordered by a white picket fence and protected by a broad hedge. Though on closer inspection the paint on the fence was peeling away leaving the darkened wood exposed, and the hedge was withering leaving patches bare. The shadow of a frail, thin figure appeared behind the almost transparent floral curtains. The curtains began to rustle and shake in excitement as they were pulled to the side and allowed the sun past its restraints and onto Walt. He wore brown corduroy pants and a cream cable knit sweater accompanied by his well-worn slippers.
Lifestyle Theory is a theory in Criminology created by Glenn Walters in 1990. Unsurprisingly this theory is just as the name would suggest, a lifestyle choice to be a criminal. This theory focuses heavily on the biological factors that influence a person’s ability to commit crime. Walters wrote three concepts to his theory: conditions, choice, and cognition. To start, I will address conditions. In Walters’s theory, he discusses the environmental and biological conditions that are involved in entering the criminal lifestyle. The environmental condition is based around your environment like the name suggests. What that means is that the decision to commit crime is due in part by your living situations and needs. This
