Walter Dean Myers, born Walter Milton Myers, was born on August 12th, 1937 and died on July 1st 2014. He was an American author for children’s book. He wrote over 100 books including picture books and nonfiction books. Two of his most famous books arguably if not his most famous books are Monster (1999) and Fallen Angel (1988). Myers was born in Martinsburg, West Virginia on a Thursday. At a very young age, of 2, his mom passed away and he was sent to live with his new family Florence and Herbert Dean. Florence was African- American and Herbert was German. They love Walter unconditionally hence he was influence by their love to change his name. Growing up Walter life centered on his community and church. Despite being involved in church Walter faced challenges such as not doing well in school and was quick to react whenever teased by his peers or others. Due to these issues Walter found serenity in books. Before his mom passed away she use to read books very often to him, while she read Walter would imagine the characters. At a very tender age Walter found out that through reading and writing he can be in different places during dark times, such as when his uncle was murdered and his family became dysfunctional. The book is a war novel, specifically about the Vietnam War. The book realistically describe what it was really like during the Vietnam War from 1955-1975. The realism, humor and intensity attract even reluctant readers and keep them reading and thinking about the cost of the war. The book won the 1988 Coretta Scott King Award. Fallen Angels is listed as number 16 out of 100 in the American Library Association’s list due to its use of profanity and realistic portrait of the war. In Monster by Walter Dean Myers, Steve Harmon is a normal 16-year-old except for the fact he is on trial for something he believes he didn’t do. He thinks he’s telling the truth, but can one really know that. Murderer, liar, and monster Steve have been called all these things and now he’s starting to question if he’s guilty or not. At every twist and turn, people are telling the “truth” to save themselves. But the real truth is, the truth is a concept that cannot be proved.

During the Vietnam War, it was war between the North and the South. The United States would enter the war because they wanted to end communism from spreading (“Vietnam War”). What are your weaknesses? Do they affect the way you do things? In the novel, Monster by Walter Dean Myers, there are numerous times where characters’ weaknesses have made complications much worse. This story is written in a form of a movie, with Steve Harmon being the writer. In his movie, Harmon is on trial for murder and robbery at the age of 16. Throughout the story we are given countless testimonies and pieces of evidence. In the end, Harmon is found not guilty. However, the other suspect James King, 23 years old, was found guilty and sent to prison. Harmon and many other characters showed signs of weakness throughout the story and it made things so much worse for them. Through actions, dialogue, and thoughts, one’s weakness could be the major drawback in serious times.

Death, chaotic, and gruesome are some of the words that come to mind when one thinks of war. War, unlike what is shown in movies and read in books is not a glorified thing. The Vietnam War is no exception to this; if anything the Vietnam War lasting from 1954-1975 is one of the most chaotic and gruesome wars in American History. The Vietnam War, known as the longest and one of the most controversial wars in American History ultimately changed the lives of everyone involved. In Fallen Angels author Walter Dean Myers uses symbolism, setting, characterization, and a first person point of view to depict the effects that the Vietnam War through the main character Richie Perry’s eyes.
Fallen Angels was written by Walter Dean Myers, as a real event that shaped the way for our future years. This is read in different perspectives by a few main characters. The characters are, Richie Perry, Lobel, Johnson, Bruner, and Peewee. These people all came to Vietnam with one task in mind, getting out alive. This book will go into details about how each individual soldier felt during this terrible time, as well as go into some first person point of views either during defending a camp, or just sleeping at their base. Mr. Myers’ testimony revealed that the Lien Unit seized monies that were in his bank accounts; two accounts that are separate from his personal account. Mr. Myers stated that those two accounts are separate because the money in the accounts is not his personal money. One of the accounts was set up for his mother because of her mental state; he has Power of Attorney over her insurance and her health. He stated his mother received a settlement from the insurance company because of the damages done to her house. The check was issued in his mother’s name; he put the money in a separate account titled Renovations. Mr. Myers stated the money in that account is not used for his expenses; the account has nothing to do with him. He stated that when all of this happened, he spoke with the Lien Unit and was informed that if the money is his mother’s money; the Lien Unit does not want it. Mr. Myers stated he provided a copy of the check that was written to his mother to open the Renovations account; that check should bear witness for itself. He stated that the other account that is separate from his personal account is his business account for construction wiring. The account shows that the payroll is paid every single week to him and to other individuals when they are needed or hired. The author introduces many characters into the novel each with a purpose. One of the most interesting and confusing characters introduced is Walowick. Walowick is a Polish kid from Illinois, who joined the war because his country asked him to. The author introduces many in-depth attributes of Walowick throughout the novel, these include mental toughness, dependability, and keeping a positive outlook.

There were emotions I felt while I read this book times when I would stop reading and analyze the things that happen to Walter McMillian. There were even times when I felt that the situation happening in the book were done to me. I wanted to sometimes tell that they were being wrongly done I wanted to help out. I felt very heartbroken through some situations kids my age were going through. Sometimes I put myself in their shoes to see what I would have done. When I finished the book I had a different view of our society. I knew that black people were treated bad but after I finished the story I haven't truly understood the pain they went through until now.
