The colonist was justified in separating from Britain. The colonist wanted a place where they could be free and a place away from British rule, but the British decided to stay. After the French-Indian War, Britain was in debt. They decided to tax the colonist for certain good to pay for the debt. They thought the colonist would cooperate because he war benefited the colonist the most, but the colonist didn’t stating that the taxes violated their rights as British citizens. After the Stamp Act was put into action, the Sons of Liberty was formed to protest British goods. The colonist was made to pay taxes without representation in the Parliament. Firstly, the colonist was forced to pay the Stamp Act. The Stamp Act was the first act passed by
The colonists were right to break away because the acts imposed by Britain were unfair. As stated in Document B of the DBQ, acts like The Townshend Act and The Stamp Act were unconstitutional and not reasonable. They were, “Destructive to these colonies”(Document B), and Britain used them to dump their duties upon the colonies. The were unfair because the colonists, who were already working for Britain, had to pay for the weighty debts of a war they never chose to begin. The Proclamation
The first reason that the colonists were justified in breaking away from the British was because the British Parliament and soldiers made unjust decisions for their own personal gain and abused their powers over the colonists. As stated in Document 2 of the packet “Document-Based Questions--Path to Revolution”, the British parliament taxed the colonists for the sole purpose of levying money upon them (Stamp Act). The taxes was also mainly used to pay for the French-Indian War, which seems like it justifies the British taxing, except for the fact that it was taxes without representation, which can be labeled as tyranny. This supports my argument, as the American colonists didn’t like having to pay for the war, and let Britain take money away from them for profit. Another piece of evidence that supports my claim would be that on Document 10 of the packet it was stated that, “We have understood it be
Colonists sought independence from British government for a multitude of reasons. Tension quickly rose between England and the thirteen colonies due to the unjust taxing without fair representation in Parliament, the colonist’s rights to assemble were taken away by the British, and there were many unreasonable Acts and laws put into place in attempt to have complete control over the colonists as well as intimidate them. For these reasons and the suffering that the colonists endured at the hands of the British government, I feel that the colonists had plenty just causes to separate themselves from England.
There were several acts that were passed without the consideration of the colonists that would force them to pay a ridiculous amount of taxes to the British mainland. One of these acts was named the Stamp Act, which was enacted in 1765, forced the colonists to pay a tax on every piece of printed paper that they used. This would include legal documents, license, commercial contracts and newspapers in the tax. This tax mostly effected the wealthier and influential of the colonists and would force them to unite in opposition. There were several other acts that would be passed that would force the colonists to pay undue taxes to the British, such as the Quartering Act and the Tea
The Americans were justified in separating from Britain because of taxes. The first example of taxes was the Tea act. In Document 13, it states that it's an act to allow a drawback of the duties of customs on the export of tea to any of his majesty’s colonies in America to empower the commissioners of the treasury to grant licenses to the East India Company to export tea. This is important because the tea act
What caused the colonies to separate from Great Britain was that Great Britain decided that people in the colonies needed to have troops to maintain the peace between the colonists. They hated that the British had neglected them for so long and then out of nowhere they came and made changes that the colonies did not agree on. This caused some major controversy between the colonist and the troops, that later lead to the event of the Boston Massacre, where five colonist where killed. To make matters worst the Parliament decided to tax the colonist for the “helping” of the troops as well as restricting where people could settle. In 1764 and 1765 the sugar and stamp act were passed latter followed by the taxation on imports such as paper, pain,
American colonists were justified in waging war and breaking away from Britain. After French-Indian war, lots of thing happen between America and Britain. British wanted American pay for their death, but American think they have no duty to pay for it, they wanted freedom, than American revolution break out. The reason why American were justified breaking away from Britain is the unreasonable taxes that British passed after French-Indian war.
Americans, who did not elect members of the parliament, opposed the act not only because their inability to pay the tax, but also because it violated the newly enunciated principle of “no taxation without representation.” The constitutional principles and protest tactics established during the stamp act crisis laid the groundwork for the American Revolution. Arguing that not only their own representative’s assemblies could tax them, the colonies insisted that the act was unconstitutional. And they escorted mob violence to intimidate stamp collectors into resigning. Parliament repealed the stamp act in 1766, but issued a declaratory act at the same time to reaffirm its authority to pass any colonial legislation it saw fit.
English colonizes were held under rule of the King and Parliament. As time went on the settlers began to search for independence. Taxation without representation was a leading cause for the fight for independence to commence. Eventually the colonists won their independence. The King and Parliament could of done a multitude of things to retain control of colonial affairs and minimize the trend towards independence and some policies may have succeeded, but the colonists truly believed they deserved freedom.
It was the emergence of an American Identity and the resolve of parliament to reign over the colonies that ultimately led colonies to declare themselves independent from Britain. British incurred debt during the war, their first attempt was to raise revenue came with the Sugar Act in 1764 but it was unsuccessful. It led to Stamp Act, in which taxes were imposed on paper goods such as legal documents, licenses and newspapers. Colonists wanted “no taxation without representation”. Parliament countered that they virtually represented all of their
Britain wanted to have keep their “colonies” under their monarchy, but the colonies did not want a monarchy. Instead the colonies wanted a government system that is controlled by the people, but some agreed and some disagreed. This was the start of seceding from Britain.
The first limitation that the Great Britain put on the colonist was the Proclamation Line of 1763. This line sets the boundary for colonies so they cannot cross over to west of the Appalachians. In addition, The French and Indian war put Britain on a very heavy debt. In order to pay for the debt and make the colonist appreciate Britain’s help, the king and the parliament decided to lay a sequence of heavy taxing on the colonist. The first tax issued on the colonist was the Sugar Act of 1764, which enforced taxing on a lot of daily goods including wines, coffee and sugar. After the Sugar Act comes the Currency Act, which prohibited the colonies from printing their own paper money. The Stamp Act of 1765 really angered the colonist because they believe that they shouldn’t be taxed without a voice in the Parliament. The Quartering Act in the same year made the situations even worse, it required colonies to supply or house British troops that came from
Some would say that the colonist should break away from Great Britain. Some people don't want to break away from britain is because of the horror and misery britain will do to us.”Other inevitably conducting you to Anarchy, Misery, and all the Horrors of a Civil War.” That shows that if the colonist choose that way it will cause misery and war. The colonist are already in misery. “No man was a warmer wisher for a [peaceful settlement] than myself, before the fatal nineteenth of April, 1775.” Thats shows that the colonist are in the world of misery with no peace. So they should break away from Great
I would like to find an amicable solution to the impending doom that is the colonies separating from Great Britain. I understand that Great Britain has invested lots of time and money into the colonies. However, Britain, you have to realize that you have been making a fortune off of taxing your many other colonies. You are also restricting the colonists from trading with any other countries besides your own. By allowing the colonists to trade with other countries you would help them feel more independent while you would still maintain control of them. I also understand that the colonists are upset about their unfair treatment and unfair taxation. The colonists have gone through lots of hardship since the first generation that came abroad
In 1765, the Stamp Act was put into order. The Stamp Act of 1765 required colonists to purchase a stamp for every piece of paper they used. This caused the colonist to get furious. This was called “taxation without representation,” which was extremely unfair to them. Because of the “taxation without representation,” colonist began to protest and attack tax collector’s homes. Eventually, this lead to the British Parliament repealing the act in March of 1766.
