Washington Park Project

Six years ago, my family and I went to Turner Falls Park in Davis, Oklahoma. We arrived at the park early in the morning and got ready to go swimming. I went to the restroom and got changed. When we were ready, we left to go swimming we walked on a bridge to get to the swimming area, there was a huge waterfall and we went swimming under it. After that we went to another swimming area that had two big slides, we swam there for about and hour then went to our camping area to eat. The next day we went hiking on trails and also went to a castle that was made of stone. We spent the rest of the day swimming and looking around the park. Lick Creek Park is made up of 500 acres of a variety of plant and animal species native to the College Station, TX area. It is located on the southeastern corner of College Station, TX in the Post Oak savanna vegetation zone. The park covers a section of the flood plain and is a primary tributary for the Navasota River. The soil in the area consist primarily of sandy loam, sandy, and sandy clay loam. According to a report by the city of College Station, “College Station has a temperate climate with warm summers and mild winters. The mean average annual temperature over the past 30 years (between 1981 and 2010) was 69°F. The average high and average low during the same time frame was 79.2°F and 58.8°F respectively. The hottest month on average is August, with an average maximum temperature of 96.2°F (1981 to 2010). The coolest month is typically January with an average low temperature of 41.2°F. Annual occurring precipitation averages over 40 inches a year, with the most rainfall occurring during June and October, which have average 4.45 inches and 4.91 inches, respectively”(City of College Station). Lick Creek Park has two distinct microclimates: the upland Savanna and Bottomland forest.

During this history class extra credit opportunity tour to River Bend State Park I fell like I learned a lot of very interesting information on not only American history, but also Seminole History. I also learned the methods that have been utilized in hopes of preserving the park in its natural state. It is well known that it will not be possible to get the park to be an exact replication of the way it was when the wars were taken place, because the park changed before and after those events, and we do not know the exact changes to make today. But nonetheless, the park is as close to as it was back then as it needs to be, and I thought that it was an amazing thing to be in such a well preserved meaningful location. I had no idea that the Seminoles were such a big factor in American history as well as the fact that they were the only Indian group to never surrender. The wars upon the Seminoles were not necessary, and America should not have taken everything from them, or killed so many of them. The Seminoles could have been a huge advantage towards America if we would have accepted them and learned their tracking skills, war tactics, and healthy living habits, rather than stealing from them and killing them.

Voted the second most beautiful vista in America, Mount Washington is a well-known overlook of downtown Pittsburgh. Mount Washington, now a beautiful mountain with a tree covered Cliffside, was not always known for its sights. Many are unaware of the dirty environment that it used to be. Once known as Coal Hill, Mount Washington was the location of many coal mines. Back in the late 1800’s, this mountain was the source that fueled and built Pittsburgh. From the ravaging coal minds to the breathtaking Inclines, there is a lot of history that is hidden under the beautiful area which we now know as Mount Washington.

Washington Crossing State Park commemorates the crossing of General George Washington’s American Army over the Delaware River on December 25, 1776. The park houses historical sites such as the McConkey Ferry Inn, the Thompson-Neely House, and the Village of Taylorsville, as well as, of course, the site of the crossing itself. The American army crossed over an icy Delaware River from Pennsylvania to New Jersey, where they gathered to make the march down to Trenton, where they would surprise, attack, and defeat the Hessian garrison stationed there. Washington had received word that the British General Howe had moved his troops into winter quarters in New York and stationed some Hessian troops in New Jersey. In the 80s the demand for services has continued to increase and Bread for the city experienced a dramatic growth within its organization. The non-profit served between 1, 000 and more than 3, 000 people. To meet the growing need “Bread for the city opened satellite sites throughout Northwest DC. In 1991, BFC opened its first satellite site in Southeast DC, distributing food and clothing from a loaned church basement. Services grew to include health and nutrition classes, counseling, and referral services” (Bread for the city, 2009-2016). The presenters reply was after they have finished fundraising for the project which they were hoping would be the ground breaking would be Spring 2018 (Bellevue City Council Meeting, October 23, 2017). A second concern the council expressed was parking. The presenters mentioned having four off-street parking spaces, with a handicap included (Bellevue City Council Meeting, October 23, 2017). However, the council’s concern was that if there was a bigger function at the park the residents living near the park may experience frustration with a large amount of people parking near their homes.

On Saturday September 3rd, between 6:30 and 7 I went to the Arlington Parks Mall to observe the movement of others. In that short period of time I observed at least a hundred people, some I analyzed closer than others. Despite the fact that I am a creature that produces movement as well, and am someone who is not new to seeing others in action, there were some new revelations that were made apparent to me about movement outside of the expectations I already had. (3) First and foremost, people’s movements, like the finger prints that we are born with are unique to each individual; movement is a rainbow of flavors, no person moves exactly like the next. When I was observing in the mall the first and most common movement I noticed was walking.

The Independence National Historical Park is a 40 acres long park that consists of most of Pennsylvania’s most important and visited historic sites. Most of the park sites and historic landmarks are located within the neighborhoods of Old City and Society Hill. This historic national park is included in the system because of the meaning that it has with the American Revolution and the formation of the country. The historic national park is home to Independence Hall where the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution were signed and adopted.
