However first commercial tea plant was brought to Sri Lanka by east india company from India. James Taylor is the first person to start tea industry in Sri Lanka in mid-19th century. Starting from then Tea Industry in Sri Lanka has come a long way and now it has become one of the main sources of foreign income. It takes a share of 2% from annual GDP and contributing around 700 million US dollars per annum. Total direct and indirect workforce who involved in tea industry is over 1 million. In 1995 Sri Lanka was the 4th largest tea producer and was the world’s largest tea exporter with 23% of total tea exports. Cool temperature, Humidity and rainfall of the hill areas of Sri Lanka provides the most suitable climate for tea production.
