In Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s ted talk titled “We Should All Be Feminists”, Adichie discusses the subject matter of what the word feminists means and how feminism still affects her life today. In one of the most important points of Adichie’s speech, she discusses how she was led to believe that being a feminist was a bad thing, and how boys are put on a higher pedestal than women. In one of the many examples Adichie gave, she recalls the memory of how a boy in her primary school was given the position of class monitor, just for the fact that he was a guy and not Adichie herself. So, in all, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s “We Should All Be Feminist”, successfully appeals to the audience’s emotions, by providing a witty commentary on feminism and the unequal treatment of men and women. The approach that Adichie uses is discouraging for the audience, especially for some was unfamiliar with feminism and maybe was considering being a feminists. However, Adichie instead used her platform to put all the blame on men, even though her first case of misogynistic views was from a woman. “We Should All Be Feminists” is clever in how Adichie delivers her speech, but it comes across in a way that will turn devoted feminists into non-feminists. As one can see, Adichie is breaking down the history of the word “feminists” and creating something new out of the word. As the audience, can see, Adichie is setting up her speech, by showing what the past connotation of the word “feminists” was and what the negative reaction it came from men. You would expect Adichie to give examples of how the past connotation of the word “feminists” is not true, instead Adichie shows why that Nigerian journalist would call feminists unhappy, with no husband. Adichie does the exact opposite by complaining the whole thirty minutes of the ted talk and talking about how horrible men are, and putting women on a pedestal above them, as women can do no wrong. While Adichie gives a various examples of the unequal treatment of both men and women, Adichie only show a few examples of the unequal treatment of men, like always being pressured to be more masculine especially with money and trying to be the dominant one. When first listening to this, this was shocking to the audience, because for once the feelings of men was considered and how pressure is put on them to prove how masculine they can be, or else they are defined as feminine.
