Since many benefits were observed with this mode of learning, it was included in various disciplines. In PBL the student group is presented with a problem and they discuss it within groups, learners develop possible theories or hypotheses to explain the problem, identify the issues to be researched and construct a shared primary model to explain the problem at hand2. The role of facilitator is to guide the students to approach the problem in a systematic way. After initial discussion as a team, the students work independently to research the identified issues and ultimately students re-group to discuss their findings and refine their initial explanations based on what they have learned. As students were forced into their growth of knowledge in elementary school and middle school by continuously being taught basics, in order to prepare them for high school and beyond, they get to gain their freedom and decide whether or not they want to meet their teachers’ marks in high school. Throughout the school year, there comes a time where students have to sign up for classes. By having this choice, students can decide on how they want to challenge themselves in the next school year. During my two and a half years of high school that I have conquered so far, I learned that in a classroom setting there are students who take advanced courses, enjoy the subjects that they chose to take, and try their best to get the best grades that they can receive, in order to prepare them for their future in adulthood. However, there are also students who do not try or realize the importance of the free education given to them because they do not have an interest in the subjects that teachers are teaching them or are just being forced by their students to attend school. There are certain qualities that make secondary students more challenging to guide than primary students. It is unfair to say they do not enjoy learning, but they need to see a connection of the knowledge they acquire in the classroom is relevant to their own lives. If a student does not feel he or she has received any satisfaction in the classroom, the risk of them rebelling increases. The adolescent years are the formative years for people, and what occurs during this period will have a lasting effect. If students feel disconnected or unsatisfied with knowledge, their learning will undoubtedly be compromised. They constantly need to be encouraged and guided through daily activities and interaction. It is essential that young people foster healthy interactions with teachers who they are able to depend on and who can assist in their growth.
In order to teach successfully teachers must learn about first learn about their students. Teachers must assess the student’s capabilities and interests. Some students are visual learners, while others learn from hands on activities, or verbal communication. Not all students can learn through memorization, rather they learn through interest and relation to the topic. “To realize what an experience, or empirical situation, means, we have to call to mind the sort of situation that presents itself outside of school" (Democracy and Education). The curriculum should encompass material that is most useful for a student to learn. It seems that in the majority of schools, students are not given the flexibility to guide their own learning, but rather follow rigid instructions that destroy the student’s imagination.
Take care of motivation, and learning will take care of itself. Learning comes from all forms of understanding. A person whether they are children or adults must take care of themselves in order to focus and maintain what is important. Self esteem in students is especially important when students are learning so when the self-esteem is high the motivation is high thus the learning will excel. One of the key responsibilities as teachers is to become a motivator. Motivation is how people move themselves to do an activity, job or anything that needs to be done. Motivation comes within the person and the interest and the spark of curiosity must be ignited, as teachers we gain motivation by rewards, and grades. Which is why motivation needs to be monitored constantly if we have the motivation than our learners will want to learn.
