Have you ever had a dream that just changed your life completely? My dad had a dream that changed his life for the better! He dreamed of me, that’s also how he got my name, Divia! Him dreaming of my name gives it so much more meaning. So if I had the choice to change my name I would not change it. When a parent gives you a name they give it to you because it’s significant to them. A nickname that I have always had is peanut because when I was born I was tremendously small for an 8-pound baby. I was born on January 20, 1999. When I was younger my mom used to always told me different stories, my favorite one was the story of how my dad used to walk behind me with a pillow when I was learning how to walk. She told me he didn’t want me to fall
The struggle to find one's identity is a universal theme that is especially prevalent in Chaim Potok's novel, My Name Is Asher Lev. As an Orthodox Jew, Asher's gift for art is looked upon very unfavorably. Despite the disapproval of his community and father and the pain his art causes those around him, he pursues his passion and must find a way to reconcile the conflict between his religious identity and his individual identity.
Of all of the people I have encountered in my life so far, my father is the one to leave the greatest impact. I remember my dad would always ask me “ do you want to be the boss or be bossed? ” These word are what drives me to work hard and try my best in everything that I do. Maybe it was the fact that I have seen him grow so much over the years that his words and actions have affected me so much today. Through these words and actions I have been able to think of what i want to do and where I want to be in life after I graduate high school.
All change has consequences. In Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg address 1863, John F. Kennedy’s 1961 Inaugural Speech 1963 and “Forgotten Jelly” by Megan Jacobson a story from the perspective of an overweight girl who is blinded by her attitude from her friend’s battle with anorexia, both the positive and negative consequences of change are explored. The effects of change are demonstrated in many different ways, however, they all attempt to convey a central aspect of change; that all change has ramifications.
Most people, unless they choose to be an outsider, want to be considered “cool.” Whether it’s to fit in with a peer group, or clique, or to impress someone in particular, like a member of the opposite sex, or a potential mate. Or possibly to gain something from an individual for financial or social gain (see “Scamming”).
Identity is what defines us as a person. Everyone one on earth has their own unique identity. To showcase my identity, I created a collage of images and descriptive words, called an identi-kit. This identi-kit shows what I feel like is my identity to myself and the others. My identi-kit identifies me as a mixed martial artist. The identi-kit has images of a deadly shark with mixed martial arts gloves on that say mixed martial arts on the front and fight shorts with the words competitor and warrior on them. It also has descriptive words like “killer instinct” and “fight” which describe my spirit. There are three assumptions that come to question when asking about one’s identity. The first is if you were born with this
When I was about five years old I had something happen to me that would change forever. My life before this was not the best and was really confusing to understand and that was because I was always moving into different houses with my mom and would always have a new dad which as a little kid you don’t really know what is going on and have to just deal with it. My mother was not the best and did not take really good care of me.
Did you know I have a brother? He is very irritating and sometimes nice. He told me that you hated frozen. I also have 5 rabbits that I use to show at fair. I have a crazy grandma too. My family calls me the “Forgotten Child” because of my grandma. She remembered my brother’s name and his girlfriend's Eliza, but then she stood and stared at me because she forgot mine. Finally my dad told her and she suddenly remembered. She remembered Eliza’s name, but not her own granddaughter? My great-aunt and her also asked me who Devin was. So that’s why I’m called the forgotten child. One thing a lot of people think is weird about me and my brother is our birthdays. Ross was born July 9 and I was born July 8. I only like it because I never forget his
One interesting birth story about myself is that my mother at thirty-four weeks broke her own water bag by drinking a laxative and walking down the street. It was then that my mother knew she was in trouble and had to get a neighbor to call the EMS. Once she arrived at Roper hospital in Charleston South Carolina, she was given an extra shot that was not an epidural to help push me out of her womb. Apparently, I was so comfortable inside my mother’s tummy that when it was time to push, little ole me was not ready to come into this world. My mother was in labor approximately twelve hours before a star was born on March 12th, 1995. Only weighing seven pounds seven ounces I was as light as the game light bright, but easy to handle and hungry. My
Steve Jobs once said, “Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma -- which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.” Life is about changing yourself over and over again until you're happy, then changing yourself again because you're no longer happy -- and that's okay. Often, once you make a choice in life, people will put you in a box, shutting you out from all light, resulting in a misshapen, brittle, and weak mind and heart. The greatest nourishment for them is change, and once someone takes away the ability for the mind and heart to transform, they take away your life. When I was 14, naïve and insensitive, I learned the value of change. My life did change, slowly morphing me into
A name is not just what you’re called, it is who you are. It is what you stand for and ultimately defines you as a person. Growing up, I used to think my name did not fit me and that nothing that my name stood for had anything to do with me. Now that I am older, I understand the real meaning of my name and how the traits that are connected with my name relate to the person that I have become and continue to develop into. My name represents who I am and who I plan to be.
The reason given to undergo changes in a community is because of the disorder it faces. Disorder such as violence, poverty, and poor sanitation are extremely high in these areas and city official want to decrease it. Interestingly, the demographic of these neighborhoods is highly blacks and Hispanics. In reality, this is not surprising at all, is the historical context that lead to this is analyzed closely. There are a series of events that contribute to the disorder neighborhoods/people suffer and continue to suffer from.
A mentor of mine once shared with me this quote from Bradley Whitford that has always stuck by me: “Infuse your life with action. Don't wait for it to happen. Make it happen. Make your own future. Make your own hope. Make your own love. And whatever your beliefs, honor your Creator, not by passively waiting for grace to come down from upon High, but by doing what you can to make grace happen... yourself, right now, right down here on Earth.” I think about it often when I am working, doing homework, or just working on a home project. It is one of those things that doesn’t leave once it’s there. I try my best to fulfill that quote, even if I don’t always succeed. When I was doing research on universities, my mother told me that she had graduated
To be an American is to have traits of freedom the thing that the founding fathers counted on is to have the will to speak freely and to have the will of religion in the constitution it say that every citizen should have life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. This impacts and brings everyone from different places to help create a society that is free. The founding fathers also counted for the people to speak for what is right. The reason is because this helps out on what the people want instead of the government wants this goes to show that the people matter and that is what makes a person happy and also makes a person feel like they have the pursuit to be happy.
My middle name is Faye, which means loyalty or belief. My middle name is named after my paternal grandmother who has this middle name too! I also have two cousins named after my grandma! I am happy with this name because it goes well with my first name and it came from a close relative. When I am older, and have kids, I plan on passing this name onto my first girl. I hope they will continue passing it on! I love the middle name Faye and what the meaning is.
What’s in a name? Names define us as individuals. We as people have a first name, a last name, sometimes a middle name, and also perhaps some nicknames used by different people. Names are important, but not just for people. In the Bible, there are dozens of different names used for God throughout the Scriptures. Many people might wonder why God needs so many names. I believe one of the primary reasons why God has so many names throughout Scripture is because they have to do with His nature and character. I feel that each of God’s and Jesus’ names in the Bible emphasizes a particular facet of Their character. As we understand how each of God’s names reveals another aspect of His character in the Bible, the more we will learn about Him. Let’s look at some names that were used to identify Jesus in the New Testament.
