What comes to mind when you hear the saying “good parenting”? Amongst American families, there isn’t any rule book as to what a good guardian is, but there are two main styles of parenting that are adjusted within each house hold throughout a community, and throughout the nation. It was during the 1960’s when the types of parenting styles were distinguished into four major categories, authoritative, authoritarian, permissive, and absent. Throughout various eras, only two styles have become the fundamental way of parenting, authoritative and authoritarian. Why are these the “go to” forms that moms and dads resort to? Although kids will be more behaved, what starts to happen when they become too obedient? According to Child psychologist Dr. Gail Gross, in her article, “How Different Parenting Styles Affect Children (2015), she explained how “They will grow up to look for approval after performance and may have low self-esteem following with having difficulty in social relationships.” Parents have the option to choose whether this is something they want their kid to endure because some can’t handle it as well as others. Low self-esteem comes from the approval that children search for at home. Once authoritarian kids grow up and get into the real world, they won’t have as much confidence in their own actions and motives. As a result, this setback will disturb their lifestyle as whole if it can’t be fixed. The same problems will start to arise in social situations as well as in potential relationships. In addition, Audrey Krisbergh, in her writing, “The Center for Parenting Education,” (2014), aids in the claim that authoritative parenting can be more beneficial for adolescents, by describing how “assertive rather than aggressive parenting, can have kids achieve more amongst themselves.” With less setbacks, this gives kids an opportunity to take on more without having to overcome the weaknesses they grew up with similar to authoritarian choice.
