What Did I Learn In This Class? At This Point, I Can Honestly

Daniel 12: 4 “But as for you, Daniel, conceal these words and seal up the book until the end of time many will go back and forth, and knowledge will increase.”(NIV Bible.) Matthew 24:14 speaks of world evangelism “And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come. (NIV Version.) We can see that the Gospel will have the ability to move throughout the world via the internet and online ministry capabilities. Technology is, at times, considered by Christians in a negative light. This is especially true when using technology in ways that are conforming to the world (Romans 12:2). However, there is evidence in the Bible that technology is looked upon favorably by God. For example, Psalm 119:105 reads "Your word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light for my path."(NIV Bible.) The light can be perceived as a form of technology. Albert Einstein once said “It has become appalling obvious that technology has exceeded our humanity. The short story By the Waters of Babylon written by Stephen Vincent Benet is written around the effects of technology. In this story, the son of a priest discovers that they had destroyed their entire world with the overuse of technology. As the son himself said, “perhaps in the old days they ate knowledge too fast”. This caused them to create negative effects which destroyed their world, and caused them to live a different life. Technology can have detrimental effects on the Earth, which can lead to destruction but there is still hope for new beginnings.

God’s command to “fill the earth and subdue it, and have dominion” (Gen 1:28) by tilling the earth shows that man’s capacity to dominate the earth lies within himself, transforming it to his own needs.

Throughout the evolution of mankind, we made discoveries that change the way we live our lives today. Over time, these breakthroughs demonstrate the progress succumbed by the human race as challenges arise. Nevertheless, technology is a significant factor to the progress in today's world. If there was no tech then there would be no cell phones. Cell phones are one of those vital pieces of tech we use frequently. Tech is always around us. Humans create things to make life easier and resolve a once difficult task at hand. The author eloquently expresses these views in quotes such as, "Secularism, materialism, and the intrusive presence of things have put out the light in our souls and turned us into a generation of zombies," (Tozer 15). The ever intrusive presence my generation of Christians must succumb to is technology. Society promotes technology as a form of idolatry, ever dependable and omnipresent. Advertisements display overnight improvements to inform everyone that technology is quite an unstoppable force; which increases our belief in humanism that just as machinery progresses, so do our own capabilities. This is despite the fact that all electronics have battery lives shorter than the time it took to type this paper.

Wernher Von Braun said that Science and Religion are not antagonistic, they are sisters.   The same can be said of technology.   As Billy Graham stated neither science or technology can answer the question  of human evil, human suffering, and Death.  Only God can change the heart and only God can right wrong.  Science and technology are tools in the hands of man.  Those tools can be used for good or for evil.   The same atomic technology can destroy an entire city or provide power to the same. Rocket technology can send a man to the moon or destroy plans, shipped, and other target from mile away.  The internet can be a great resource of learning and knowledge sharing or a place of degradation and evil.   Science has always been a close companion

As society becomes more dependent on technology and the benefits that it provides the question “Do the benefits of technology outweigh the risk? ” often arises. Those who believe that benefits of technology doesn’t outweighs the risks claim that it can lead to the pollution of the environment, creation of superior military weapons, and mass consumption of natural resources. On the opposite spectrum people who believe that the benefits of technology far outweigh the risk believe that technology is the tool that enables humanity to aid one another in many different ways. Siding with the opposition, the benefits of technology far exceed the risk it possesses as it allows us to cure diseases that were untreatable, communicate with people across the world, and, contrary to popular, opinion help the environment.

For the purpose of this assessment some of the sound effects were downloaded from Blastwave FX. These samples take away the difficult and time-consuming process of creating high quality sound design behaviours into games. Some of the samples were impossible to create with my budget (explosions, machine gun et.al). Blastwave protects its copyright by all necessary means, including legal action.

When I first looked over the course outline, I was a little apprehensive about some parts of this technology course… Me? Create a website? (& it actually turned out to be kind of fun!).

What concepts, principles, or ideas that you have learned, do you think you will remember the most after you leave this class?

I feel like I learned a lot from this course. I think, overall, this course was very eye-opening and made me understand, and want to better understand, issues involving gender and how they effect society. I would say the one of the most important pieces of information I learned was just how much the idea of gender and gender roles influences everyday life. I had never really thought too much about the determents of gender or traditional masculine and feminine ideals before this class, and how we as a society promote and encourage the belief that a person’s gender or sex creates different innate, natural attitudes and attributes. Learning about how important society’s views of gender is, and how it affects the way we learn and think, makes me look at our culture in a different way. For example, before this class I never realized how much women are objectified and put under intense Photoshop in advertisements. This better understanding of the way society is helps me take a step back and look at our culture in a different way, and allows me to become more aware of the issues surrounding gender, sex, and the ideals of masculinity and femininity.
