Do you know how diversity affects a college or university? Have you ever just wondered how diverse your college was? I have thought about his many times and think that Upike is a very diverse school. Upike is not only a great education provider but also a great example of diversity in central Appalachia because of the way this picture displays the enjoyment and happiness among students of different areas and ideas. Diversity, as defined in the Merriam Webster dictionary, is “The quality or state of having many different forms, types, ideas, etc.” OR “the state of having people who are different races or who have different cultures in a group or organization.” Upike started out as just a local high school facility and has transformed to the leading school in Central Appalachia. I believe this shows that this picture shows how diversity is a main part of Upike and this picture represents Upike because of the presence of diversity. Prior to 1955, there was not a non-white student enrolled and in 1955 the first black student entered the college and was photographed in the yearbook that year. This goes to show how diversity is a big part of diversity because they made a point to show that student in the Yearbook. The picture shows a white and an African American student shaking hands and laughing. This goes to show that Upike brings more than just education to students. For two days, I observed the first ten individuals entering the Jones-Sampson building located on the JSU campus. Observing these individuals allowed me the opportunity to explore how diversity is perceived from a small sample of the campus. I believe, a college campus is the perfect setting to view the hop topic called diversity. The population at JSU includes people from various countries, social economic backgrounds, class, gender, occupations, and sexual-orientation. Racial diversity is something that is often discussed on college campuses. As a student who self-identifies as a minority in more ways than one I often feel like I have a pretty good understanding of the subject of racism and race. However, often times when these issue are discussed I learn something new; this was the case when reading the articles this week. This week’s articles examined the issue of race from different perspectives. This allowed me to re-examine the issue in a fuller manner; it also allowed me to question some of my own notions that I hadn’t really challenged before.
Gregory, Perry and Rankin also explains that In 1907, African Americans infrequently had different choices for advanced education aside from a general (HBCU) .Furthermore, Gregory, Perry and Rankin states that In 2008, HBCUs are still transcendently African American and flourishing in light of the fact that these organizations are effectively teaching and graduating African-American understudies more so than ever before. In the short article which is based off of her book, “Introduction from Place, Not Race: A New Vision of Opportunity in America” by Sheryll Cashin, the author talks about Abigail Fisher and the time when she was applying for her dream school, at the University of Texas. As quoted in Paul Connors’s compilation, Affirmative Action, President of Columbia University, Lee Bollinger, addresses the importance of a diverse educational system by stating, “The experience of arriving on a campus to live and study with classmates from a diverse range of backgrounds is essential to students' training for this new world, nurturing in them an instinct to reach out instead of clinging to the comforts of what seems natural or familiar” (12-13). A statement by Southeastern Oklahoma State University further supports the idea that success in modern day society stems from diversity saying, “Our country is strong because of the rich diversity of our culture, not in spite of it” (Affirmative Action).
Its history is full of fights against racism and segregation. This has made the country move at a slower pace because people do not give their all as most of their efforts are reserved for racism. The most vulnerable population is that of the young individuals as they are easily manipulated. HBCUs, however, are very effective in the campaign against the total elimination of racism and any form of segregation. Their effectiveness stems from their nature of the composition; these institutions register the highest percentage of diverse cultures than any other learning institution. This teaches the young student population of the importance of peaceful coexistence, the notion of equality and the value each person has. The diversity of the student population also helps in subjects like sociology, psychology, and economics just to name a few as students are exposed to a wide array of cultures (Office for Civil Rights). The school, Winchester University, is a white ivy leagues school where they have a minority of black kids. Throughout the movie, there are many comments about race, and people are not afraid to say what they think, for example in the movie it is said that having just one African American as friend is not enough to pass as a non-racist. In the movie just the fact that you are white is an advantage, because you get better treatment, and you are put in a certain category, you are put in an inner circle. In the movie white kids are put together to living in the same houses while black kids would be all put together in the same house. In the movie there are clearly certain moments where people used their color as an advantage. An example of using color as a privilege, when they wouldn’t let Lionel in to a party just because he wasn’t part of an excuse or elite group

Students have their own best way in effectively learning the lesson. With the diversity of students, the problem is each student has a preferred learning style. It becomes undeniably one of the reasons that make it difficult to achieve the best expected outcome out of teachers’ effort. However, teachers try to incorporate various teaching techniques to make every learning opportunity become productive, meaningful, and relevant for the learners.
In today 's world where the population, especially of the United States, is growing gloriously diverse, institutions of higher education must also reflect this aspect in their student body. The purpose of colleges and universities is to provide students with the education and experience they need to succeed after graduating as well as expand their thoughts and perspectives. Thus, they must create and maintain a similar environment in which students will live and work in the future. Although diversity has been emphasized as a priority for many schools, socioeconomic diversity is often disregarded. However, socioeconomic diversity plays an important role in developing the perspectives and minds of students. Thus, it is essential for the admission offices, especially of prestigious universities like the University of Pennsylvania, to recruit and admit more economically disadvantaged students as well as for the schools to meet the needs of and maintain those students.
In order to study the need of a racially and culturally diverse college campus, the journey and battles fought must be dicussed. While there is a lack of diversity on college campuses today, they are not completely devoid of people of color. However, there was a time when college campuses were one hundred percent Caucasian. Jonathan R. Alger, Jorge Chapa and a team of researchers conducted studies on various college classrooms. They then went on to publish their findings in a book titled Does Diversity make a Difference? The purpose of their paper was to discuss the importance of diversity and reveal the effects of non-diverse campus. They begin their book by taking a look into the history of diversity in America. The start of the Civil Rights movement along with President Lyndon B. Johnson’s war on poverty took place in the mid 1960s. These events forced the country to face the reality of the people of color in America. These Americans of color did not have equal access to education, jobs, housing, or other valued resources (Alger et al. 2000). College administrators and faculty were starting to understand the necessity of a diverse campus. The realized that people of color had just as much to offer to the United States as the Caucasian majority. During that time, “many higher education faculty members and administrators were deeply concerned that abandonment of race sensitive admissions and hiring, at a time when most minority groups continue to be unrepresented in higher education, will severely limit campus diversity and would undermine the learning environment for all students.” (Alger et al. 2000). Additionally, a lot of the traditionally white colleges and universities were provoked and questioned by the concerns of their students.
